Hereevery conceivable thing is encountered: meats, vege-tables, fruits, bread, confectionery, groceries, hats,shoes, baskets, pottery, bird-cages, toys and notions ofall sorts; in coffee shops every kind of Mexican foodmay be had, especially dishes for the poorer class, asbaked pumpkin, roasted sheeps heads, boiled corn,beans, and more beans v^rith chili sauce, coffee, milkand fancy-colored drinks. Some of the displays areon shelves and tables, but more are on the flag-stonepavement where the vender has arranged his, or her,articles in piles of varying values. Do you wish thisbunch of radishes? Throw down a copper and helpyourself. That pile of peanuts is a centavo. Being at that time without railway connections,tropical fruits in Parral were disappointingly scarce.We were more than a mile above the sea. The fewshrivelled oranges were grown more than five hundredmiles distant. Even grapes and figs were high.

< IV WHAT THEY THOUGHT OF THEPROTESTANTS 1HAD not anticipated being able to hold the firstservice in Spanish within three months after ar-riving, as was the case. My first sermons hadone merit, that of brevity. They were fully writtenout, then corrected by my teacher, after which nosmall pains were taken in preparation for delivery.Continuing the same care the five-minute sermonsgradually grew to ten in length (I wonder if theamount of good was thereby doubled). In the matterof prayers, help was obtained from a Spanish copy ofthe Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. Our Span-ish hymnal was published by the Methodist Missionin Mexico City; a good little book, the hymns beingmostly translations from the English. The Mexicansare extremely fond of music, and new converts,whether or not acquainted with the tunes, are certainto join vigorously in the singing.
