en in the streets.The main street was still discernible, and,although ones passage was blocked by debrisin many parts of the smaller thoroughfares, itwas quite easy to walk over a great part of thetown. The effects of the earthquake were suchthat the walls of nearly all the buildings fellinwards ; the whole of the roof and the tops ofwalls of the cathedral have fallen inside thebuilding, and the same is the case with nearly allthe houses. A number of persons were searching amongstthe ruins for anything valuable or curious, andfrom one of them I bought a small blue glasstumbler which had been made shapeless by thefierce heat to which it had been exposed. One ofmy companions purchased a small Crown Derby coffee cup and saucer for a shilling. One of oursailors found a quantity of wire nails run togetherinto a solid block, weighing, perhaps, a couple ofpounds, and several similar bundles were offeredto us. During our visit the top of Mont Pelee wascompletely hidden by clouds of smoke, whichhad been pouring out ever since the eruption. A few birds were seen amongst the ruins of thetown. We were informed that during and shortlybefore the disturbances on Martinique and St.Vincent, enormous flocks of pigeons* appearedon the island of Grenada, where they remainedfor a fortnight. During the eruption, and forseveral days afterwards, quantities of dust fellover many of the islands, especially the Barbadoes,where it was collected in bottles and sold tovisitors. * Columba squamosa. CHAPTER XV. GRAND CAYMAN ISLAND. After leaving Jamaica on 8th March, 1904, welaid our course for Grand Cayman, the largestof the three islands of the Cayman group, whichlies to the west of Jamaica.
