e of tens if nothundreds of thousands of years. And bearing this fact in mind, one will experience a strange 19 THREE WONDERLANDS sensation as he gazes on this weird intermittentfountain, justly considered one of the gems ofthe wonderland. When Columbus discoveredAmerica this great white column at regularintervals was playing and glittering in theprimal solitude; when Lief Erickson landed itwas unspeakably old, but glorious as ever; whenChrist was on earth its strange beauty fell onthe eye of the infrequent savage who gazed onit with a superstitious awe; long before thereputed date of the creation it played and corus-cated in the sunlight; before man himself trodthe earth Old Faithful, robed in showers of dia-monds and the glories of the rainbow, rose andfell with none to see and admire. And thinkingof its immeasurable age, one is led to hope thatfor countless centuries to come this beautifulnatural phenomenon may continue to play tothe delight and admiration of millions yetunborn. 20
Text Appearing After Image:
Ill NATURAL WONDERS OF THE PARK-THE LAKES AND RIVERS Next to geyser action in its myriad forms, the rivers and lakes of the Yellowstone willdelight the visitor. There are none morebeautiful in the whole world; the pure, limpidwaters, the swift green and crystal rapids, theglorious foam-clad, rainbow-hued falls and themagnificent setting of natural scenery are alto-gether unmatched. The panorama, as one gazesup the great painted chasm of the canyon withthe green foam-flecked Yellowstone writhingthrough it, ending in two of the most gloriouscataracts on earth, has altogether nothing tocompare with it; the canyon of the Colorado isas brilliant and vaster, but its dark, sand-ladenriver is no match for the emerald flood of theYellowstone. The whole course of the riverfrom Livingston to its source in the lake is oneof constant beauty, which is probably at itsheight about the last of June, when the floods 21 THREE WONDERLANDS of the melting snows swell the stream. Fortwenty miles after leavin
