om the market-place side. There have beenmany surmises as to the purpose for which it was intended, but there canbe little doubt that it was for a meeting-place of the town guilds, whichwere at least four in number, with services and priests in the Trinity,St. Katharines, St. Johns, and Jesus Chapels. These guilds, which, aswe all know, would have a good deal of business to transact (one of themmaintained a hospice in Gosditch .Street, and they all were benefitsocieties, and exercised the duties of practical charity), and these roomsor halls would be useful for social and business purposes. But now a greater work was to be undertaken. In 1515 enoughmoney was collected to enable those responsible to begin the rebuildingof the nave. The abbot and canons of the abbey must have taken alead in the work, for the church was entirely in their hands, and theabbey arms appear in various parts of it; and there would be otherpersons of position who would.assist, such as Ruthall, Bishop of Durham,

1396891 Cirencester Meeting. 35 the Berkeleys, Comptons, &c.; but the wealthy woolstaplers of the townmust have the chief credit of what was done. Here, as in East Anglia, they enlarged and beautified their parish church as a thankoffering fortheir prosperity. I think the Garstang family alone had both a coatof arms and a merchants mark, but you will find an interesting seriesof these marks amongst the arms and badges of those who contributedto the rebuilding of this which, I think you will agree, is one of thenoblest arcades in England. And let me point out an exceptionalfeature. Not content with the great clerestory, they put one over thechancel arch, and even another over the arcade of the north aisle. Thegreat work must have been finished about 1530, when one Henry Tafferleft money for the seats. Abbot Blakes initials are carved on theexternal keystone ; he became abbot in 1522. I have only now to mention that in 1535 the abbey was dissolvedand destroyed, and in 1539 part of it
