rees. Such casts, large and small, are common in the rocks of the islandsat all levels, from below the sea to the highest hilltops, and they canbe seen in actual process of formation. Many of them are thoughtto be the casts of stumps of palmettoes or some, other palm tree, nowextinct. (See under Geology and plates Ixxxiv-vi.) The drifting sands sometimes blow into the sea and accumulate insuch quantities, in sheltered harbors, as to fill them up to a greatextent. Tuckers Town harbor, originally called Stokes Bay, whichis now very shallow, with extensive sand-flats, bare at low tide, issaid to have been deep enough, at first, to admit mercliant ships ofmoderate size. Its appearance indicates that it is still filling up, forthe upper part of the beach merges directly into the still activesand-dunes of the shoie. Mr. Nelson, also, says that before his time (1833) the channel atCrow Lane had been veiy much filled up, but this was probably by silt. 480 A. E. Verrill—The Bermuda Js/a?ids.
