Theythen endeavored to soothe my disappointment, and, as theywere going into the town, wanted me to go along with them,but I declined. In consequence of this remonstrance theysent me from the town the sheikhs nephew, who had been illfor several days, to bear me company and to take care of me,and this was a great treat in my solitary situation, as I hadnobody to speak to. However, new difficulties appeared toarise with regard to my departure, and, during the next fewdays, I received several curious messages, the real purport ofwhich I was quite at a loss to understand. But El Bakay atlength promised that I should only have to wait two dayslonger, when he would go with me himself; but it was not tillthe very last day in March that he returned from the town tothe camp, and, although he at length brought my luggagewith him, my real departure was even then still far remote. He was therefore in no hurry to leave,but rather tried every means in his power to counteract my en-deavors for a speedy departure. An extraordinary degree ofpatience was therefore necessary on my part, and I was obligedto seek relief from the tediousness of my stay here in everylittle circumstance that broke the uniform tenor of my mono-tonous life.
