AND PHILADELPHIA. 13 Its Growth and Population. . New York is pre-eminently a commer-cial city, and is scarcely inferior to themost celebrated commercial centers ofthe globe. The spirit of the adventurousDutch West India Company which earlytook possession of the island, has actu-ated every succeeding generation. Thepopulation of the city did not reacha thousand until 1656. In 1664 itamounted to 1,500, in 1700 to 5,000, in1750 to 13,500, in 1774 to 22,750. Dur-ing the decade from 1790 co 1800 thepopulation of the city nearly doubled, inconsequence of the war in Europe, swell-ing it at the latter date to 60,489. Sub-sequent to 1812 the population in-creased to 100,000; then came the warwith Great Britain, and for three yearsthe growth of the city was checked, andin 1820 it contained but 123,706. Dur-ing the next decade came the completionof the Erie Canal, augmenting the facil-ities of commerce, and in 1830 the popu-lation numbered 202,589. The great fireof 1835 and the financial crisis
