Returning by carriage, onemay peep at the Bloomingdale InsaneAsylum; or, by making a detour west-ward, one may see the New York JuvenileAsylum, at 176th-street, pass over Wash-ington Heights (the finest part of theisland in the summer) to the largest insti-tution in the world for the educating ofthe deaf and dumb, to the Colored OrphanAsylum, and return by the Boulevard. Another rare excursion is to the islandsof the East River. To visit them, go to theoffice of the Commissioners of Charitiesand Corrections, corner Eleventh-streetand Third Avenue, and obtain a permit,then to foot of East Twenty-sixth-street,and take steamer to Blackwells Island,Wards Island, and Randalls Island.Still further up the river is Harts Islandand the School Ship. As youjourney you pass the Battery, Castle Gar-den, Governors Island, Fort Lafayette,Fort Hamilton, and Sandy Hook Light-house to the left, and Staten Island, FortWadsworth, Quarantine, and NavesinkLight-house to the right.
