g fronts. Portuguese tiles are seen only in theoldest quarters of the town. Plaster fronts, so commonin Brazil, are replaced with fine building stone, muchof which is quarried in the Uruguay hills. The leadingthoroughfare, the Julio, recording a date of patrioticmemor3% is approached from Plaza Constitucion, wherestands the cathedral, a massive building with twotowers. On another side is the showy Uruguay Clubhouse. Close at hand is the chief opera house andtheatre of the town. A few blocks further on is aplaza, surrounded on four sides by government andother buildings, with continuous lines of colonnadesand arcades, a unique and striking effect. A thirdplaza with a graceful column surmounted with a statueof Liberty is in the heart of the city. All the way fromPlaza Independencia, the Julio is lined with handsomeshops, in which European goods are attractively dis-played. It has the airy effect of a cool, tasteful Pari-sian boulevard. There are street cars trundling in everythoroughfare, the musical horns of the conductor beingheard long past midnight and in the earliest hours of themorning. Handsome carriages and cabs are in thestreets. The wide sidewalks are thronged with a busy,energetic, and thrifty population. There is a wide-awake and prosperous air about the town, that remindsone strongly of Boston, to which it bears a markedresemblance in topographical features and compactnessof construction. But Montevideo is European ratherthan American in its aspects and customs.
