Text Appearing Before Image:
hich I have travelled at both sides ofthe Andes, have I seen a building of this kind, which, even in ruins, shows such rare beauty of majesticsimplicity in architecture as this Cathedral. Itoccupies the whole northern and most elevated sideof the principal plaza. The towers and roof weredestroyed in 1868, and the whole edifice shaken.Indeed, at one corner of it there is a rent in thewall from top to bottom. At the other side of thestreet running out of the plaza, opposite theCathedral, and towards the left, is the Church ofthe Jesuits—the topmost part of the tower whereofis in a condition of chaotic ruin. The front ofthis last-mentioned is a wonderful work of Sillar-stone carving. There are several large quarries inthe neighbourhood of Arequipa, whence it is trans-ported into town, dressed in square blocks of abouteighteen inches long, a foot broad, and four inchesin thickness. These are carried in leathern orstraw panniers, on the backs of donkeys—a stoneat each side being a load.
Text Appearing After Image:
2 c MM - Sillar. Iloavy rains fall in Ai*u(iuij)a, andtho arclud roof is bolicvod to resist the eartlu^uakobettor than a flat one could. All tlio churches of San Augustin, San Marco,San Domingo, Santa Rosa, La Merced, and manyothers, are in conditions of a most distressinglytumble-down appearance. Santa Rosa is, however, being rebuilt, and one or two others, including thatof San Francisco, have been perfectly restored;but the larger number of churches as well ashouses still exist in the shattered state, in whichthey were left by the earthquake of August, 1868. At the corner of nearly every street in Arequipawe find drinking-fountains, from which water canbe taken in any quantities by persons who desireit. In nearly all the streets, we see the usualPeruvian institution of a(^equias, or watercoursyes, running down the centre.
