It may be, indeed it isaltogether likely, that he went down into the valley by thisvery pathway. How the very thought stirs the heart withemotions too deep and sacred for utterance! Just at this point outside the city wall, a short distancefrom St. Stephens Gate, the original of the annexed photo-gravure was taken. It presents a beautiful view of theMount of Olives as it appears to-day. In the foreground itwill be observed that the road, after crossing Kidron, pass-es between two walls, and farther on it forks. The enclo-sure at the right is known as the Garden of Gethsemane andis to be distinguished by the tall, pointed cypress* treesgrowin- within the wall. The other trees we see growingin the garden and elsewhere on the mountain are olives.Many of them show extreme age and have stood on the

Above the gardenand farther to the right is the new Greek church, the top ofwhich is seen in the foreground of the photogravure ofJerusalem on page 529. To the right and rear of thechurch is the Jewish cemetery. The top of the mountain,it will be observed, is covered with olive trees. This isthe traditional place from which Christ ascended, and ismarked by a Greek church and modern mosque. The Greekchurch with the tall spire, to the left, was completed onlya few years ago, and is a beautiful structure built of cutstone. The other has stood on the summit of Olivet formany centuries, and Christians may worship in it. Threeroads or pathways lead over the mountain. The one to theleft goes up to the northern height of Mount Olivet. Theone in the center leads to the summit and to the traditionalsite of the ascension.
