One ofWhistlers peculiarities was his tendency tospeak of his pictures as studies in some par-ticular tints, even when they were likenessesof real people. He says, Take the picture ofmy mother exhibited at the Royal Academyas an arrangement in gray and black! Nowthat is what it is. To me it is interesting asa picture of my mother! but what can andought the public to care about the identity ofthe portrait? We can expect Whistler tomake just such an absurd statement when hismood was that of Boldinis portrait of him(see Fig. 78). He was at variance with peo-ple just for the sake of annoying them.
