SUPPLEMENT. 1 VA His influence, it seems to me, is seen in the best work of Mary Hallock Foote,and others, who, like her, drew enthusiasm from him. It was not in our work that he helped us, so much as in teaching us to see things. He wanted every impression to go through the influence of the imagination. There always seemed to me something particularly noble in the fearless way inwhich Dr. Rimmer would answer, I do not know, when questions were asked aboutmatters which he had not studied. He had a way of saying child to a favorite pupil; and I sometimes thought heconsidered all of us Cooper Institute girls as his children, and so treated us in the tenderway he treated his own family. He had no fondness for general society, saying that the atmosphere of most peopleoppressed him; although, to those whom he did find congenial, he was most stronglyattracted.
