ia. We have spoken before of the con-vulsions that usher in scarlet fever andpneumonia. In the former, intenselysore throat and vomiting, in additionto the convulsion, will be the dangersignals. If a severe chill that shakes 107 WHEN TO SEND the body from head to foot precedes orfollows the convulsion, pneumonia isdoubtless threatened. Acute Meningitis and Cerebrospinal Men*ingitis. The convulsions that introduce acutemeningitis are attended by high feverand the projectile vomiting alreadydescribed (which see). Moreover, theconvulsion is apt to be limited to oneside of the body, a fact to be always re-membered. These are the convulsionsthat are so frequently followed by sud-den paralysis of different parts of thebody,—of one arm, or of one leg orfoot. What to do for Relief of Convulsions. In older children convulsions may beepileptic in nature. If this is true, theyare preceded by a peculiar moaning cry,by a fall, or by a ringing in the ears.During the convulsion the tongue will 108

FOR THE DOCTOR be bitten, and the ordinary froth at themouth will be streaked slightly withblood. Rickety children are apt tohave convulsions. Whatever the cause for the convul-sions, the treatment must be prompt.Let the child be stripped and laid upona blanket, at the same time coveringthe entire trunk with a large towel orsmall sheet dipped in mustard waterprepared by mixing one tablespoonfulof ground mustard with one quart oftepid water. After wrapping thetowel or sheet around the body, wrapthe child in the blanket upon which ithas been lying and let it be undisturbedfor fifteen minutes. All treatmentmust be directed by the physician, whomust remain until the convulsion hasentirely ceased, Fits or Epilepsy.
