It was alovely trip up the river Clyde, and I was fortunatein seeing the charming scenery in fine weather. 12 90 WILLIAM CALLOW From Glasgow I took the train to Edinburgh, a cityglorious in position and effect. The mists wererather against sketching, for I had to go to thehills three times to obtain a general view of thecity before I was successful. After spending somedays sketching I went by coach to Melrose, Jed-burgh, Berwick, Bamborough Castle, Alnwick, and •J- 1 ^ - ■4 CHATSWORTH. Durham; then by an omnibus from CatterickBridge to Richmond, and back to London. Travel-ling by coach in these days was a great pleasure.Stopping at the principal towns, one was welcomedat the inns by the landlords, and was served astravellers never are and never will be again. IN LONDON 91 mission from the Duke of Devonshire to make twodrawings of Chats worth for Queen Victorias album,one of the house from the garden, and the othera view from the conservatory—two points of interestwhich Her Majesty had greatly admired during hervisit to Chatsworth with Prince Consort. TheDuke gave instructions to his head gardener, Mr.Joseph Paxton, afterwards knighted for his servicesin connection with the great Exhibition of 1851, tolook after me, and having to work in the openair during bitterly cold weather, a furnace wasplaced near me, so that I could warm myself, anda manservant was deputed to wait on me. Whenthe drawings were finished the Duke came to seethem at my studio, and he was so pleased with themthat he increased the price originally stipulated.
