ng designated a Latin convent as the lodging he preferred,was graciously introduced by the governor to the Franciscansuperior of the house. We were very weary. One of the brotherswith much alacrity showed us to clean, comfortable rooms, andspread a generous supper. The superior, a handsome, educatedSpaniard, manifestly uninformed of the political occurrences of theday, conversed with us at table, and expressed a hope that theluxuries which were prepared for us were satisfactory, but declinedto participate, because they are forbidden to him. Such monasteriesas this are found dispersed throughout the Holy Land. They werefounded at an early elate by Christian charities in Europe, toafford shelter and comfort to the pilgrims of the West. Beingendowed with lands, and conducted with great frugality, the com-munities are now self-sustaining.
