Text Appearing Before Image:
SCENE IN JAVA. by high, thick hedges of heliotrope, cactus, and creepers, all inbloom. Over these hedges, the light bamboo lines the avenue, opening only to reveal the native cottages, peeping from underpalm-groves. All the people we see, whether about their humbledwellings, or moving on the high-road, seem busy, contented, andhappy. Only two beggars approached us on the way, and thesetimidly; both were blind.
Text Appearing After Image:
A FASCINATING RESIDENCE. 287 The manner of travel here is on the postal system, which wasnever known in America, and is now superseded by railroads inEurope. We have Mr. Pells stately old coach, which has seats forsix passengers inside, and ample room for four servants outside. We carry no trunks, our wrarclrobes being stored in the capaciousboxes under the seats. Four horses draw us over the level plain ;more are added in climbing hills. The driver has two assistants orrunners (lopers), who, by constantly applying their lashes, keep theponies up to running-speed. They are whisked off and replaced atstages of seven miles. We made the journey in three hours. Ateach stage, the traveller pays four cents to each loper, and ten ortwenty cents to the driver. If Batavia is fascinating, this suburban viceregal residence issupremely so. The palace stands at the south side of the nativecity. The approach is through a park, covered with a greener andsmoother sward, we imagine, than even England o
