File talk:Skull of crocodile (Crocodylidae).jpg
Picture of the day
editThis was picture of the day, though no proper taxonomic (i.e. at least generic) assignment of the specimen is given in the description?! I even doubt that this is a representative of the Crocodylidae since the rounded snout rather points to a member of the Alligatoridae (not every crocodile belongs to the Crocodylidae!). Furthermore the poor degree of ossification (i.e. quite open sutures between the individual skull bones) suggest that this is a juvenile. Yet this is not mentioned in the description! --Gretarsson (talk) 15:05, 16 February 2019 (UTC); subsequently modified 15:16, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
After doing some research, I’m quite sure, that the skull overleaf belongs to a member of the Caimaninae, possibly a Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger). It is the largest species in the Caimaninae (up to 6 m total length) so that a 30 cm long skull could well be a juvenile... --Gretarsson (talk) 17:40, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
