Picture of the day

edit

This was picture of the day, though no proper taxonomic (i.e. at least generic) assignment of the specimen is given in the description?! I even doubt that this is a representative of the Crocodylidae since the rounded snout rather points to a member of the Alligatoridae (not every crocodile belongs to the Crocodylidae!). Furthermore the poor degree of ossification (i.e. quite open sutures between the individual skull bones) suggest that this is a juvenile. Yet this is not mentioned in the description! --Gretarsson (talk) 15:05, 16 February 2019 (UTC); subsequently modified 15:16, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
After doing some research, I’m quite sure, that the skull overleaf belongs to a member of the Caimaninae, possibly a Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger). It is the largest species in the Caimaninae (up to 6 m total length) so that a 30 cm long skull could well be a juvenile... --Gretarsson (talk) 17:40, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
