An older version of the template contains this text:

"The UN maps is an open source material. You can use them to make your own maps. You do not need our permission for that. Please be advised that the UN name and reference number should not appear on any modified map. The UN map is a UN document and cannot be modified. You can said something like "Based on UN map no..." -- Vladimir Bessarabov (UNCS Cartographer), 13 April 05"

It seems that someone has requested permission for modifications and got it. The requirement that modified maps must not be misinterpreted as the original or as coming from the UN is ok. I've asked the user who originally made that template for clarification. -- 3247 13:09, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

OTRS seems unlikely

The OTRS seems unlikely to me. Will someone with OTRS access please confirm that the OTRS shows that the person was actually authorized to release the material into the public domain? —Danorton (talk) 17:25, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Propose change to remove restrictions

I propose that the restrictions be removed from the box, as they contradict the "public domain" status. The non-copyright restrictions should be added as a separate box, à la {{Personality rights}}, and this template could add that box, if appropriate. —Danorton (talk) 17:25, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Why do the restrictions contradict "public domain" status? Not even attribution is required for modified UN maps. In fact; the UN name and reference number must be removed from the map.

The link back to the original UN map is for proof of sourcing here at the Commons. It is not required though when others use the map outside Wikimedia Projects. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:18, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Replace template text

UN material is not automatically in the Public Domain, as sometimes material of a third party is used ---> UN Guidelines for the publication of maps. For example commercial satellite images. Also photos are not Public Domain unless otherwise stated. http://www.unmultimedia.org/photo/guidelines.jsp

OCHAoPt (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs occupied Palestinian territory) is part of the United Nations, but has documents with different copyrights. E1 Jerusalem Satellite Barrier August05 on http://www.ochaopt.org/mapstopic.aspx?id=108&page=2, e.g., includes a copyrighted satellite image from Space Imaging Middle East (LLC). E1 Jerusalem Graphic Barrier August05, on the same page, is from OCHAoPt itself, without a copyright indication. East Jerusalem: Key Humanitarian Concerns (page 6) has a map with the indication that you may use it, provided that you explicitly refer to United Nations OCHAoPt. Apparently, the organisation has choosen to promote itself by means of the images. --Wickey-nl (talk) 11:49, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

The basic rules should be:

• Unmodified UN maps without copyrighted material of Third Parties should have the UN map-2 (or UN map) tag, to indicate that it is in the Public Domain, pursuant to general UN policy ---> See http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/english/about.htm about maps from the United Nations, and the ticket referred to in Template:UN map (also compare with US Government documents, which are in the Public Domain).

Unmodified UN maps should keep UN name and logo, as well as existing disclaimers, such as “The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations.”---> See UN Guidelines for the publication of maps.

• If you adapt a UN map, it should have an appropiate alternate tag, such as PD, CC BY-SA or GNU (as used in Wikipedia). As it is no longer a UN map, UN name and logo, as well as disclaimers should be removed. You may indicate that the new map is based on UN source ...

• If the original UN map may be used only with the provision that the UN source is mentioned (as in some OCHAoPt documents), you may choose one of the above two options (but not the PD tag), but the attribution to the original UN source should always be remained as indicated by that source.

Template:PD-UN is deprecated. It needs to be removed from these pages:

The German translation should be improved

Could someone please correct the German translation? The translation quite clumsy and there are some errors. Some statements are missing. A suitable translation which is more adherent to the original English text would be:

Dieses Bild zeigt eine Karte, die von einer Karte der Vereinten Nationen (UN) abgeleitet wurde.

Wenn nicht anderes ausdrücklich angegeben ist, können UN-Karten als gemeinfrei angesehen werden. Dies gilt weltweit. Einige UN-Karten haben besondere urheberrechtliche Bestimmungen, die auf den Karten selbst angegeben sind.

UN-Karten sind prinzipiell quelloffen (open source) und können frei, beispielsweise auch für die Erzeugung eigener Karten, verwendet werden. Die UN verlangen jedoch, dass in diesem Fall der Name, das Logo und die Referenznummer der Vereinten Nationen aus der modifizierten Karte gelöscht werden. Die Verantwortung für den Inhalt der abgeleiteten neuen Karte liegt bei dem Autor. In der abgeleiteten Karte kann, wenn gewünscht, ein Hinweis in der folgenden Art aufgenommen werden: Basierend auf einer Karte der Vereinten Nationen … (Kartenname, Kartennummer, Revisionsnummer und Datum).
