Technical problem with File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg

Hey Viewsridge, how are you doing? I appreciate your work on the File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg map! :-)

I have no clue what happend, but it seems like there is currently a problem with the map, since it does not display properly on other projects like Wikipedia and there is even a problem with the preview here on commons. People have been reverting very often in a short time, probably to fix it - but I have no clue if that will help. Could you please take a look at that?

I'm looking for a good source to update the Mariupol and Berdyansk battles, and all i could find about it was some speculations from the Institute for the Study of War. Hey, I don't think this merits inclusion because it doesn't seem reflective of the situation on the ground. I think this is the sentence you're citing:

"Russian troops, however, have made considerable progress in southern Ukraine as they advanced from the Crimean Peninsula toward Kherson, Mykolaiv and Mariupol. Another offensive, stalled by Russia’s failure to capture Kharkiv, pushed to link up with these troops from the north, aiming to encircle some of Ukraine’s most capable forces that are deployed in the Donbas region."

However, it doesn't say that the two fronts have linked up - it says that they pushed to link up - i.e. they are moving to link up but have yet to do so. This is consistent with what I'm reading across Ukrainian media and on the ground reporting - Mariupol is not encircled as it stands. Cran32 (talk) 23:46, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your map. Can you add Horenychi and Hostomel (town) ? Names. Ukrainians said about russian forces near it. Also it needs to add Bucha's name and the airport near Vasylkiv. @AbsolutelyFiring: If you're using Inkscape, on the top left side of the program click Object and then click Objects from the drop down menu. A menu will open on the right side, the objects name will be highlighted when you click them, you can drag the object names above other object names, this will overlay it above the other objects. Hi, I love the maps and really like the Ukraine invasion one & the work you put in. But I am colour blind and find the yellow on yellow(specifically with Ukraine's movements) difficult to see. Hi. I've also gotten complaints about these colors (light yellow and pink w blue arrows) at en:Talk:2022_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine#map, that they're "a bit of an eyesore" and "horrible on the eyes". I don't know if that reflects a difference in monitors; personally, I don't find anything wrong about your color scheme, it just seems a bit cartoonish is all. But maybe there are other colorblind solutions that would meet with more acceptance? (Though maybe that would just result in a different group of people objecting.) The maps for List of foreign aid to Ukraine needs revision

I don't know if you've seen the suggestion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_foreign_aid_to_Ukraine_during_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War#A_new_map_needed.

I'm not skilled enough to change the map, but I can help in pointing to changes needed. If you want me to, tell me how we should communicate (if not here).

According to the article, Artsakh, which is questionable to be on the map at all, has sent aid to Russian forces in Ukraine, not Ukraine. Remove Artsakh from the article completely?

I think you missed what I referenced first though:

"The map here is faulty as it shows several islands/territories as independent nations. For instance, US Virgin Islands (part of the US), British Virgin Islands (UK), Canary Islands (Spain), Gibraltar (UK), Faroe Islands (Denmark), Puerto Rico (US), Saint Pierre and Miquelon (France), Sint Maarten (Netherlands) and Saint Martin (France) are not countries of their own and should be covered by their nations' decisions on the map."

These are just examples. Hence, you can grasp there's work at hand. :)

These islands/territories should probably not have a circle at all, because it would convey they are countries of their own. Another solution is to put the country in parentheses after their name, like "New Caledonia (France)".

Also, territories which are self-proclaimed states should be removed. Now they are marked as their countries, not part of the countries they belong to under international law: Transnistria (part of Moldova), Luhansk People's Republic (Ukraine), Donetsk People's Republic (Ukraine), Abchazia (Georgia) and South Ossetia (Georgia). It would be like if the map would show Crimea as part of Russia.

Of course, all I've said goes for the map of military aid as well.

@Viewsridge I've made a list of islands/territories to be marked blue, as they are not independent. It's about 30.

I also encircled them on this map: https://ibb.co/MkkDF9q Those in red should be marked blue. Those in black are self-proclaimed states and should be removed.

This goes both for the map of humanitarian and military aid.

@31.209.52.211: I believe the island territories you've listed have a certain degree of self rule from their dependent states. Directly incorporated territories such as French Guiana are already marked in their dependent colors. British Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man have sent aid to Ukraine exclusively. @Viewsridge Fair enough. Although different degrees of self-governance, I believe most of them have their foreign affairs and defense governed by [dependent country]. Is "foreign affairs and defense" enough? Is Wikipedia ok as source? It's a lot less time consuming than digging through official documents. The reason this is vital is that now the map shows them as what could be perceived as independent countries not supporting Ukraine, while in fact (most?) of them are by their dependent country. (Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man have complex statues, but foreign affairs and defense are still governed by the UK.) Ok on the "partially" unrecognized states then. @SirColdcrown: You can use Inkscape to edit the .SVG format used in Wikipedia. There are tutorials on how to use Inscape online, but just interacting with the program should give you an idea on how it works. For a base map you can download selected areas from OpenStreetMap, which is copyright free. User NordNordWest also has a nice gallery of locator maps, which can be modified into battle maps. If you downloaded File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg and then used Inkscape to edit the text, then the file is probably a mess. Most graphics editors do not handle multilingual SVG.

If your version is a clean Korean SVG (that is, it has no systemLanguage attributes), then you could upload it to Commons as File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine ko.svg. Many users have uploaded language-specific versions of the map, but those maps have not been updated frequently, so they are little used.

A better approach to adding Korean would be to use the SVG Translate tool. Click this link:

and select Korean. At the start, I would just translate the map legend. You can always add more translations after you see what the tool can do. Also, you do not want to spend hours in SVG Translate before committing your changes. Somebody may upload a new version of the file while you are translating the old version.

Another benefit of adding the translations to File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg is that the 10 pages that already use the file on the Korean Wikipedia will automatically start showing the Korean translations that you add.

Can you update File:McDonaldsWorldLocations-fr.svg by coloring Russia in dark gray because Mcdonald's withdrew, color Iran in light gray because Mcdonald's was never present there and add the border of South Sudan (there never have been Mcdonald's in both Sudans)? The updated File:McDonaldsWorldLocations.svg can be used for reference.

@31.200.13.53: I've removed Russia from the files that were used in Wiki's. I Don't think South Sudan's inclusion is necessary at this point since there are no operators in both Sudan's. Basic Russia Ukraine map

Hello, Viewsridge! Is there a version of the Ukraine territory map "2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine" from February 24 2022 to September 5 2022 without any colored arrows on it? I'm doing a sort of coding exercise and it'd be helpful for me to have a version of the map with as little visual noise as possible. Even better would be a map without arrows or labels, just the territory lines and colors. I need a gif though, as I need all of the dates included in the primary animation. Thank you!
