Hello, Iguacu!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

How did you calculate LocMap border coordinates? edit

Hi there. How did you calculate map border coordinates for file:South Bohemian Region locator map.svg? I did not find any information on how to do it or where it can be obtained. I converted a transparent map of Ústí nad Labem Region to LocMap format using standard color scheme for the map, but I have no idea on how to determine the correct coordinates :-( — Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 13:59, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ahoj. To create this particular map I used a larger one with cities shown on it. I cropped the image so that its borders went through one city at each edge of the map. Then I found the latitudes of the cities at the upper and lower ends and longitudes of those on the right and left. That's how I did it, but in your case, I suppose, that won't work.
However, there's another way of calculation, it can be less accurate, though. You basically need to know decimal coordinates of any four points on the map and their pixel coordinates as well. The closer these points are to the borders of the map, the more accurate result you get. You can use the coordinates of the extreme south, north, west and east points of the Kraj, or any other point on the border of the Kraj. Decimal coordinates you can get using Google Maps, while pixel coordinates should be available in MS Paint, for example. To do the calculations you will need a special .xls file, which I can send you via email (you'll need to email me first, because "Email this user" function does not allow to attach files).
Hope that I explained everything clearly, if not, don't hesitate to ask. :) — Iguacu!?ru-wp 23:01, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you :) I already did some border calculations using Google Maps and Photoshop that I layered both maps on top to match the region borders, however coordinates were at larger distance so I had to use my mouse to measure halves and quarters to get some coordinates. I know it's not so accurate. There were coordinates in degrees & primes format, so I used my calculator to convert it to decimal format. This was my first map conversion, but I doubt not the last. If I have some troubles, I'll definitely let you know :) Agai thank you for help. — Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 06:44, 9 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
The pleasure is mine :) I see, you did quite a good and mostly accurate job. However, some places (Varnsdorf, Šluknov and Blatna, for instance) are shown on your map a bit further east than they actually should be (so that the mentioned town of Varnsdorf "trespasses" the border with Germany, and Blatna leaves Ustecky kraj:) ). I will try to do some calculations myself when I have time, if you don't mind, maybe I'll get more accurate figures (or maybe not, since it was long time ago I did it the last time). — Iguacu!?ru-wp 07:53, 9 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
