October 2021

Hello!

I saw that you reverted my edit on the East Africa map on the basis of COM:OVERWRITE. I was under the impression that minor changes allowed for an overwrite (I don't know if a dotted line counts in all honesty).

I am not very familiar with Commons rules. Would I need to upload a new file for this?

Many thanks, Dabaqabad (talk) 00:42, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

@Dabaqabad: When it comes to borders, changes tend to be controversial, especially if the map is widely used. Uploading a new map is your best option. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 23:38, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Niger (orthographic projection)

Hello!

I saw that you reverted my edit on the Niger (orthographic projection) on the basis of COM:OVERWRITE. The version I uploaded uses the standard colours and shading used across orthographic projections, but the contents are the same. Data source is NaturalEarth, 2021 version, which is commonly accepted as source on Commons. Which are the reasons for the revert?

thank you and best regards --Sette-quattro (talk) 11:03, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

@Sette-quattro: If you look closely at the countries' boundaries, you'll notice that they are not the same. As for the data used, while Commons accepts any source, including the user generated ones, this isn't the case for other Wiki projects where the quality of the source is one of the many rules that dictate what gets included. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 00:27, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@M.Bitton if you are talking about Somaliland and Western Sahara, we can add them as dotted lines, following the conventions, and solving the fact that the current projection is not currently centered and not using the shared style. I'll prepare the image and re-upload it. Best! --Sette-quattro (talk) 16:05, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@Sette-quattro: You are obviously free to upload whatever file you want, but please, don't overwrite any image that is already in use. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 16:11, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
The main point of overwriting it is to provide a better designed map for the same function without having to relink it in each wikipedia. Since by community standards the files named File:{Country name in English} (orthographic projection).svg should have a specific style, I think it's the best solution to overwrite the existing image, which is not correctly visually formatted probably just due to lack of technical skills of the original uploader.
Just to check if I understood correctly, since it's still not clear to me if the issue is related to those two borders or other. If I would have uploaded a newer version of the image, correctly centered and with the standard style, with the same exact borders of the previous version, would have been fine? Best, --Sette-quattro (talk) 22:31, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@Sette-quattro: The en.wiki suggested convention is just a guideline that is more often than not ignored (other Wiki projects that use the image either have their own or have none). While I can't possibly think of all the changes that others may object to, I know from experience that the borders in general (their position, stroke, whether they are shown, etc.) tend to be high on the list. Theoretically, if one is to stick as closely as possible to the original map, like I did (see the map that I uploaded), while paying close attention to the problematic areas that are visible such as Kosovo, WS, Cyprus, Somalia, Siachen Glacier, Golan Heights (made a judgment call on this based on how old the image is), Crimea, etc., then, it should stand a good chance of not being contested. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 15:39, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
I don't know, it seems to me that you are adopting an overly rigid reading of commons rules just to avoid to add a couple of boundaries that you don't like.
Furthermore, I saw the image you uploaded. It is the version that you rollbacked with another name, changing it and crediting you as author. And I imagine that I i want to upload my version I have to choose yet another name. It's not really nice. Just to conclude, it doesn't seems to me that we can go further with this, I hoped to do something useful adding a better designed version of the map with a clear source, but it seems it wasn't. best --Sette-quattro (talk) 22:05, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Casting aspersions and throwing a false accusation to boot. Had you assumed just a little bit of good faith and compared the maps properly, you would have concluded that they are not the same. We're done here. M.Bitton (talk) 22:00, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
I assumed good fait until i saw the image you uploaded, and the way you did it. I don't have any particular stance on the borders, I'm more interested in keeping a clear process between images and their sources and I was looking for a mediation for keeping the global image name for sake of simplicity. --Sette-quattro (talk) 22:34, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Diplomatic maps

Please stop uploading maps that aren't correct. Thank you. --Semsûrî (talk) 13:50, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

@Semsûrî: In what sense aren't they correct? I have been asked to create those based on what's in their respective articles. If those articles contain errors, feel free to point them out, or better still, improve them. Thank you. M.Bitton (talk) 14:10, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
It seems you've only added countries with diplomatic missions but such a map should not be titled diplomatic relations. Obviously Burundi does not only maintain diplomatic relations 10 African states (!) --Semsûrî (talk) 14:12, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
You're welcome to join the discussion en:Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab/Map_workshop#Creation_of_an_svg_file_for_"African"_foreign_relations. In the meantime, I will appreciate it if you stop overwriting the maps that I have uploaded. Thank you. M.Bitton (talk) 14:14, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
@Semsûrî: Forgot to ping. M.Bitton (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
I'd rather send you sites that states Burundi maintains diplomatic relations with such and such country on the map's talkpage. Is that fine? --Semsûrî (talk) 15:03, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
@Semsûrî: If it's all the same to you, I'd rather you improve the concerned articles (the used sources) so that the maps reflects what's on them (as one would expect). M.Bitton (talk) 15:06, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
I'll check the articles out. Also, can you use the same map and color as the maps I've created, for harmonisation purposes? (see [[1]]) --Semsûrî (talk) 15:11, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Sure thing. M.Bitton (talk) 17:57, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

MNNA

This is a map about US recognition. The "so what if it does" is just that reason. If it were a map of UN recognition, then of course, W.Sahara would be separate -- but then, Taiwan would not be. Should we color all of China as an MNNA just because the UN does not rec Taiwan as a separate country? The status of many areas are going to change depending on whose recognition we're mapping, or if we're mapping de facto control. It's inconsistent to color Taiwan separately from China (so what if the US does recognize it?) but W.Sahara as not part of Morocco. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:07, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

@Kwamikagami: This is not a "map about US recognition", it's a map meant to show NATO and Major American Non-NATO allies (as specified in a source that doesn't mention anything about the international borders. M.Bitton (talk) 22:12, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
But then whose reality do we map? Why is Taiwan shown as a separate country?
Of course it's a map of US recognition. The who concept of a MNNA is a US designation. It means nothing apart from US recognition. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:16, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
It's definitely not a "map about US recognition" and not being able to explain something doesn't mean we need to add more original research to it or violate NPOV as we see fit. M.Bitton (talk) 22:22, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
By that argument, we should separate out Taiwan, Somaliland and Abxazia on your UN map. It's not an NPOV violation to follow UN recognition on a map of UN member states. Similarly it's not an NPOV violation to follow US recognition on a map of MNNA member states. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:38, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
It's neither a UN map nor mine, it's a map showing the UN members that you requested and that I created for you based on an existing one (which it was supposed to replace). M.Bitton (talk) 00:44, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello I did not do a test on the map, if you click on the image I uploaded you can see that it is real SahinBasaran (talk) 10:45, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

I take the fact that you self-reverted to mean that you finally saw the problem. M.Bitton (talk) 14:28, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, but that's not the source that I used for File:Presidential Standard of the Republic of Vietnam (1967–1975).svg. M.Bitton (talk) 14:28, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Europe and the European Union.svg

Hello. On what grounds was the edit with the designation of the European territory of Georgia removed? In your version, a small part of the territories north of the Caucasus Range is missing, while the territory of Azerbaijan is circled. Carefully check the original source of these maps with continental boundaries, and you will understand what I'm talking about. Рагин1987 (talk) 13:25, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

@Рагин1987: On the grounds that the map was created on request for a specific purpose. You are welcome to create your own and seek consensus for wherever you want to add them. M.Bitton (talk) 13:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
@Рагин1987: I also suggest you read COM:OVERWRITE, which basically says that once our change has been challenged, you have no choice but to upload under a different name. M.Bitton (talk) 13:34, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

I'm pointing out an actual mistake you made in the process of creating this map. Some of the territories of Georgia in Europe have disappeared from you, while in the original vector maps with borders, this territory is circled. I corrected this minor mistake (albeit I did it correctly the second time), but for some reason you rolled back this contribution. --Рагин1987 (talk) 13:36, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

@Рагин1987: I said what I had to say. I'm done here. M.Bitton (talk) 13:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

I only suggest that you correct this error yourself, since my contribution does not appeal to you (not without reason). Take a close look at this image and compare it with yours: большой палец --Рагин1987 (talk) 13:42, 4 September 2022 (UTC) большой палец — Preceding unsigned comment added by Рагин1987 (talk • contribs) 13:43, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

@Рагин1987: Like I said, I was asked to create a map according to a specific criteria and that's what I did. There is nothing that you can possibly say that would make me change it, so please stop wasting your time and mine. Thanks. M.Bitton (talk) 13:55, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Why do you purposefully remove any edits that you don't like concerning the polisario, especially when it critics them. 142.117.177.220 00:56, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Minor inaccuracies in the Taiping map

Hello! Sorry for bringing this map (File:Taiping Heavenly Kingdom map.svg) again! I have been translating it to Portuguese for personal uses and to do it I had to search for each province and find the translation in Portuguese. While I was doing it, I found some small mistakes on your map and I want to make you aware in case you want to fix them.

  • "(zu Fujian)" and "(zu Guangdong)" actually mean that Taiwan and Hainan were part of the Fujian and Guangdong provinces, with "zu" being a word in German. I don't know if you could add that information without polluting the map with text. Maybe by changing "zu" to "part of"?
  • In Outer Mongolia, "Tannu-Urianchai" is actually spelled Tannu Uriankhai in English.

These are all I could find. Thank you! AnAkemie (talk) 18:26, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

@AnAkemie: thank you for letting me know. Please check it again and let me know if I missed something. M.Bitton (talk) 19:56, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
@M.Bitton: Hello. Tannu Uriankhai does not have that hyphen AFAIK and I'm pretty sure "zu" is just a German word meaning something like "part of".
"the Qing dynasty formally annexed Taiwan in May 1684, making it a prefecture of Fujian" - Taiwan article
"Hainan was historically part of Guangdong (...)" - Hainan article
AnAkemie (talk) 20:07, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
@AnAkemie: the hyphen can be removed. Do you want me to remove the "zu" from Fujian and Guandong? M.Bitton (talk)
@M.Bitton: Either that or change "zu" to "part of". But I think if you just put (Fujian) or (Guangdong) it can be understood that the islands were part of these provinces. AnAkemie (talk) 20:17, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
@AnAkemie:   Done. M.Bitton (talk) 20:19, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! AnAkemie (talk) 20:25, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Bilateral maps of the European Union

It was not in vain that I expanded the maps on this topic, since they are corny cut down. For example, the same Georgia is an associate member and has recently applied for candidate status. However, the maps do not display the borders of Georgia (at least partially), although if you carefully look at the display history of these files, you will see that it has previously appeared in these maps (before Brexit). Consistency of map and text re Lèse-majesté

Belarus was correctly red on the map, but missing from the text, so I have added it to the text.

Countries mentioned in the text currently not highlighted on the map are: - Estonia (to add to map?) - Mauritius (to add to map?) - Morocco (to add to map?) - Brazil (somewhat different, so perhaps a new colour on the map?) - Senegal and Zimbabwe - I have just added, so to add to map? If somebody looks, they will probably find "insulting the president" an offence in most of Africa?

Countries highlighted on the map, not mentioned in the text are: - Portugal (no mention anything remaining within Portugal at https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_de_lesa-majestade, so to remove from map? - Greece (Google doesn't show anything, but there might be something left over from the Colonels' regime?) so to remove from map?

- Azerbaijan - probably does, so to add text. Or does their propaganda department keep removing it from text, but not noticing the map? - Kazazkstan - probably does, so to add text. Or does their propaganda department keep removing it from text, but not noticing the map? - Kyrgizstan - probably does, so to add text. Or does their propaganda department keep removing it from text, but not noticing the map? - Tajikistan - probably does, so to add text. Or does their propaganda department keep removing it from text, but not noticing the map? 37.249.87.38 22:27, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

@Borysk5: I just wanted to let you know that your change has been reverted because it looks like you used inkscape rather than a text editor. The map was saved in a human editable format to make it easy for anyone to update using just the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes. I haven't checked what you did, but since the map was requested on en.wp by La lopi, I expect it to reflect what's on the en:Lèse-majesté article. Hopefully, you two (maybe the above IP too) can come to an arrangement on how to improve it. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 22:56, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Wall

Hi Bitton, I didn't make my edits due to some political stances, only factual: the barrier extents north of Western Saharan–Moroccan border, tens of kilometers into Morocco. Therefore both countries should stay in categories, there's nothing controversial regarding it. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:33, 23 December 2022 (UTC)

@Orijentolog: That's not the fortification that is displayed in the category. M.Bitton (talk) 20:35, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
It's the same linear fortification. Although most maps don't show it's northern part, this one (right) does. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:44, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
@Orijentolog: Again, this isn't what the specific category is about or what the common reader would expect. M.Bitton (talk) 20:47, 23 December 2022 (UTC)

File Dispute Procedure for SVG Usage

Hello, I asked you a question about the discussion because of the premise that you had a problem with the SVG file when you edited French Algeria earlier and that you reversed the size and deleted the hyperlink when you edited it later, but it didn't improve in the summary. I think we need to check what kind of problem it is in Wikipedia. And I asked Samhanin, who worked on PNG as SVG and uploaded it, to solve the file dispute procedure for SVG use. The PNG file uploaded by M.Bitton has a file uploaded by Samhanin in SVG, so why don't you ask him to use it for the document? I asked Samhanin for an agreement just in case. --220.77.173.83 17:11, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

And Samhanin is Korean. I know that you are a foreigner. That's not the problem, but I hope you reach an agreement through discussion. Please participate in Samhanin's discussion with Commons:Deletion requests/File:Official Arabic seal of the Governor General of French Algeria.svg. --220.77.173.83 17:16, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

File:Middle East (orthographic projection).svg

Hey M.Bitton, I was wondering if you could make a derivative of this excluding Turkey from the Middle East for the English Wikinews, since we don't consider it part of our Middle East news region. I've not been able to find any maps like this on Commons, even historical ones. Thanks! Heavy Water (talk) 17:48, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

@Heavy Water: actually, that's something that you can do all by yourself. It's very easy, all you need is a good text editor. Open the above file, search for "region TUR subject" and replace it with "region TUR". Save it and upload under a different name. M.Bitton (talk) 18:04, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Oh, OK, thanks and done. Heavy Water (talk) 18:55, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Would it be possible to change the marker choices here? Hard to distinguish dark red from light red. Using dashed lines and more contrasting colors would be amazing. Also, please consider users who have one form or another of color blindness.

Hi there, I updated the map based on the November 2023 country additions. However, you did reverse back to June 2023 upload. Is there any way that we can update it? Thanks. cyrfaw (talk) 13:01, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cyfraw: of course it can, but since the map is saved in human-editable plain text format, you need to use a text editor to update it. It's very quick and easy to do. Just open it using using your favourite TE and add the lowercase ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes to the list (somewhere before {fill:#00441b}). It would also help if you could mention them in your edit summary. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 13:20, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. Yann (talk) 19:01, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mdaniels5757: I just wanted to let you know that I have no relation to M.bitton2 (who is pretending to be me). After I removed their comment from my talk page, they left another on yours. M.Bitton (talk) 13:14, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Apology

Hello mr M.Bitton. I would like to apologize for overwriting File:Israel-Palestine Diplomacy.svg. The reason why I changed the source is because editing Morocco is a huge mess and I hate it. I almost want to bang my table and say that I consider you an enemy for reverting, but that's my problem because I'm a person who finds it hard to control emotions, and you're right while I'm wrong. I promise that I will never overwrite an existing file like this ever again. Underdwarf58 (talk) 00:23, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

@Underdwarf58: no worries. If you need a base map at some point, you can use this one, which is an optimized copy of "BlankMap-World.svg". Best, M.Bitton (talk) 00:38, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks a lot mister Underdwarf58 (talk) 00:45, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Ireland Eircode Key Map

Hi, First thank you for creating this. <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eircode_Routing_Keys.svg> It's much appreciated.

Can you tell me where you got the boundaries from? We're doing something similar ourselves, and I came across your work. Best wishes, Anthony Staines Astaines (talk) 11:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it's been a while since I made that map and I can't remember where I got the boundaries from (it's most likely buried somewhere in the thousands of folders and notes). All I could find after a quick search is a couple of completed maps of Ireland (of the provinces and NUTS 3 regions) that for some reason I have never uploaded. If you think that they will be of use to you, let me know and I'll upload them. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 23:26, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
