Template to mark external uses of a file

Hi, I'm looking for the template to mark a file that's used somewhere else (probably without permission) on it's talk page. I know such a template exists, as I've seen it a few times, but can find it again. In case I forget about this: It's about https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Himmelreich.jpg which looks suspiciously similar to an image from https://dbmobil.de/mitmachen/das-grosse-db-mobil-jubilaeums-raetsel/5-x-mit-ameropa-durch-europa but the latter throws an error for me now, so I can't check in more detail. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 13:31, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

@Nenntmichruhigip: I think the template you want is {{Published}}. --bjh21 (talk) 16:23, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Global Replace

After all, there is the Commons:GlobalReplace Tool, which replaces a file in all wikis. Is there another program that does the same but works unlike GlobalReplace? I would like to use such a tool so that when I have created SVGs of bitmaps, I can then replace the bitmaps with the SVGs in all wikis. --ZabeMath (talk) 21:11, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Non copyright restrictions questions

If photographer take pictures of someone and license it under free license but people show on photo only allow to use in Wikimedia project, is it ok to upload? StayC, Bae173 and music fans [ talk to me ] 08:16, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

@J. Smile (Love & V.A.V.I): One of the conditions that designate a free license is that Republication and distribution must be allowed. By limiting to use on the Wikimedia projects, this is preventing republication, making the license non free, so it wouldn't be allowed. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 11:42, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
@Alex Noble: But depicted people do not have copyright from it. Because in photo the people have right to license is photographer (the who take the pictures), depicted people is not have right to license it. However, both depicted people and photographer have right to restrict the use of this picture (photographer can restrict use by copyright law, while depicted people is by right of privacy and right of publicity law). But right of privacy and right of publicity law is restrictions that independent from copyright, and Commons generally only enforce copyright restrictions. StayC, Bae173 and music fans [ talk to me ] 14:31, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
Commons does however require that all uploads be free for anyone to use for any purpose even outside Wikipedia. So while it is the right of the photographer and the subject to restrict the use of an image, we do not accept such images. De728631 (talk) 14:58, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Photos from archive.org

Hello, do you know if I can upload photos that I found in a scanned 1975 newspaper available on archive.org? Archive.org says that the newspaper is 'opensource' and the photos are of important politicians of North-Eastern Nigeria. https://archive.org/details/new-nigerian-1975-02-20/mode/2up Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arrantzaleak (talk • contribs) 13:12, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Those photos are not yet out of copyright in Nigeria, so please don't upload them. The copyright term for photos in Nigeria is 50 years from the first publication, so newspaper images from 1975 are still copyrighted. De728631 (talk) 13:40, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

meridian of light

the following text appears in the dutch wikipedia: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridiaanlijn#Lichtmeridiaan it would be fine to edith these text in order to make it international my name is lightmuzeum

THE LIGHT MERIDIAN

On July 21, 2016, a meridian line called the "light-meridian was inaugurated by Sven Gatz, Flemish minister of culture, youth, media and Brussels. It is located at 3°7'45" E. The meridian of light enters Europe from the North Pole through the seas at the height of the light tower of the casino of Blankenberge / Belgium and leaves Europe at the light tower of Palamós / Spain. Meanwhile it passes through Belgium, France and Spain. It is suggested to link an international art project to this meridian by placing land-art artworks along it. The Muze'um L, Light and Landscape in Roeselare / Zilverberg wants to be the artistic center of the project. light meridian will further enter Africa exactly where the future "Le grand musée d'Afrique" will be, in Algiers at a 14 ha large botanical garden with seeds from all African regions. The exhibitions will be highlighted, taking into account the time and the stand from the sun. The light meridian further crosses Algeria, Mali, Niger, Benin and Nigeria. There is a proposal to name the meridian of 3°7'45 "E" the prime meridian of the culture ".

An italian singer's portrait

Hello, in an italian weekly magazine of the 1964 I found a picture that shows an Italian female singer famous at those times. Today she is almost unknown and on Wikipedia we can find just few notes about her. May I scan this image I found and add it to her biography on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Koshka (talk • contribs) 11:57, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

@Koshka: ; it couldn't be uploaded here, as it is still too new for copyright protection to expire. However, if there is no other free photograph available, it may be able to be uploaded under fair use to the Wikipedia you plan to use it on. The Italian page for this is at project:File non liberi, and the English's project:Fair Use. I don't know the Italian wiki in detail, but it looks like it would be possible to upload the image there, and you should be able to at the English Wikipedia. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 13:20, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

How to remove autocomplete from comment summary

This one is driving me bananas: I put in a comment summary and the silly software decides to add another comment I made on another page at another time. Here is an example from another wmf-wiki.

Is there a way to ask the autocomplete software nicely to stop predicting what my summary should say? I hope you don't mind my asking on Commons helpdesk? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:30, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

I don't think autocomplete is an wiki issue but something in your browser. This page has some suggestions. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:08, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the helpful reply. I wonder, though, how the browser can determine the difference between the edit summary and the regular text box. I only noticed the autocomplete happening in my edit summary, but not in the editing itself. TIA (Thanks in advance), Ottawahitech (talk) 21:23, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: Because the edit summary is an HTML INPUT with type="text", and the main edit area is is an HTML INPUT with type="textbox". Most browsers to autocomplete in the former, but not the latter. - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Replace an old image

Thank you, but ... May I speak in Italian language, please?! :-) ... Grazie molte :-) --Glo (talk) 13:01, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Maybe I was not clear in the previous question and I still apologize for my lack of technical competence ... My problem did not derive so much from the possibility (or lack of possibility) of overwriting my' previous file ... In fact I wanted to reload this image updated with a red highlight on the edges of the notable octagonal number boxes. This new image with which I would like to overwrite the previous one is, I would say, has much more significance/relevance to the context of the octagonal numbers that the image illustrates. I tried to reload it with the same name according to the usual steps that Commons indicates (at my layman's level of editing on Commons), but I get the warning to go and reload it within the same page as the original file. In this passage as such I do not understand anything, because here, at this point, I don't seem to find any voice, no bot that will let me overwrite the new file on the same page I consider obsolete. Thank you very much

@ConMarina: Ciao e benvenuto. Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, you got the username backwards at it:WP:RA#Sblocco utenza MarinaCon, I corrected it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:23, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

I recently uploaded some photos from t981130

I recently uploaded some photos from t981130 and I just now asked him to send a declaration of consent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. If you check my upload log you'll see I have uploaded, but I'm not an OTRS volunteer. Not sure when he will send it to the Wikimedia Commons, so I am worried that the photos get deleted. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks.--Kai3952 (talk) 01:21, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Mass renaming

User:Perhelion/massrename.js shows a script, but makes no indication what to do to use the script. User:TUBS asked a while back on the corresponding talk page, but got no answer. Similarly when User:Schlosser67 asked at Commons_talk:File_renaming/Archive/2019#Is_there_a_tool_to_rename_multiple_files? - Jmabel ! talk 05:55, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel, TUBS, and Schlosser67: It appears to add a portlet link named "MassRename" (or "massrename" on Monobook) to "Rename stuff" (files) on cat pages. Users who click it are prompted for a source category name, what to search for, what to change that to, and a reason which defaults to "rename criterion 2". There are 6 checkbox options. Use appears to be limited to Admins and Filemovers. Named developer Perhelion has been "away on vacation" since November 2019, so a direct answer from that user may not be forthcoming. Former developer Legoktm may have some more answers, and edited enwiki just last week. I have not yet had sufficient reason to try it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:54, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
Works like a charm! Was my ignorance unusual, or should pages like User:Perhelion/massrename.js have instructions as to what to do with the file, and where it will appear in the UI once you've done that? Maybe a template to that effect? - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I just put together some instructions at User:Jeff G./massrename for my copy. If my copy doesn't work, please feel free to recopy from Perhelion's.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:26, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I think you are missing my point. Nowhere at User:Perhelion/massrename.js does it indicate that what you have to do is to add this to User:EXAMPLE/common.js and that the capability will then be added to your top nav. Was my ignorance of this unusual? - Jmabel ! talk 01:51, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sorry, I missed your more meta point. The best guide I have seen for installing user javascripts (for example, in Special:MyPage/common.js) is at en:Wikipedia:User scripts#How do you install user scripts? and the surrounding page. See also Commons:User scripts. Templates in .js pages on MediaWiki projects don't work, but strangely cats do work.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:47, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

We should have an analogous Commons:User scripts (or apparently some other name, or what's there now should be moved) and Commons:User scripts/List, and the talk page of each portlet JavaScript page should have a template linking to that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Image not being displayed

Hi, I have upload an image, but it is not being displayed in Wikipedia no matter what I try. The same command works with other images. I have checked many times, but it still not being displayed. HELP !!!

The image in question is this one

It appears here, but not in the Wikipedia page there: w:.45-75 Winchester. Can't find the error...

--Marcric (talk) 13:09, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

The "[[File:45-75 WCF 1876 advertisement.jpg|thumb|center|270px]]" should be "45-75 WCF 1876 advertisement.jpg", but even then is does not work. Can it be the hyphen? In Commons the hyphen between 45-75 looks higher in File:45-75 WCF 1876 advertisement.jpg than in for example File:Hussein Ali Al-Saedi.jpg. Wouter (talk) 17:01, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: It is not being displayed (only this image). @Wouterhagens: I have tried many alternatives... This image simply does not appear in Wikipedia (English and Portuguese)...--Marcric (talk) 17:14, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I`m accessing from Brazil, and the infobox appears blank for me. I can see it here in Commons, but not in the Wikipedia --Marcric (talk) 17:19, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
I tried it with the image File:Hussein Ali Al-Saedi.jpg and that shows up as it should be. So I think there is something with the file name and I suspect the hyphen. Wouter (talk) 19:44, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
A surprising thing is that when I add it to an other English WP page the image shows up. Both in the infobox and in the text. I tried also the Dutch, French and Spanish Wikipedia. There it shows up as expected. So there must be something special in the article w:.45-75 Winchester Wouter (talk) 20:37, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
@Wouterhagens: I have uploaded all images from Category:.45-75 Winchester, all with hyphens on names, and all works fine but this one !!! --Marcric (talk) 02:49, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Wouterhagens, Marcric, and Jmabel: MB fixed it in this edit. Infoboxes generally prefer unadorned filenames as image parameters.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:32, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: No, it is not fixed. That is NOT the problem. I have tryed with and without "adornments". It still not being displayed for me and other users around the World !!! I don`t know if you access from U.S. it is displayed, but THIS specific image, I (and other users as you can see) still not seeing in Wikipedia. I can see it in Commons, but wherever and however I put it on a Wikipedia page it is not being displayed. --Marcric (talk) 02:39, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi everyone It is   Done. The problem is not fixed, but I have found a way... I have upload another version (slightly lighter) of the same image with another name (but keeping the hyphen in the name), and with this one I can see it in the .45-75 Winchester (en) and in the .45-75 Winchester (pt) Wikipedia. If someone have the ability and interest to look for a real solution using the original image, be my guest. --Marcric (talk) 03:08, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

In some circumstances you can upload them to the English Wikipedia under fair use. But this is only if there is a need to use them, see Project:Software screenshots (similar policies also exist for some, but not all, Wikipedias). ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 16:12, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Same image in two different entries

File:Old home of America's first millionaire (William Panton).jpg

and

File:William Panton Home 1890s.jpg

are versions of the same picture. I don't know if these should be merged. On WP I could do it but I don't know enough to do it here. Deisenbe (talk) 19:09, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

@Deisenbe: I don’t think so, although they should probably be linked as “other versions” of each other. Background colour aside, the first is reproduced from a book, while the second is sourced from a state archive. While they may ultimately derive from the same negative, IMO they’re different enough to remain distinct and offer would-be users a choice.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:23, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

New image version not displaying

Hello! I tried uploading a new version of this image that is straightened and slightly color corrected, however whenever I upload the correct file from my computer, Wikimedia displays the original file I downloaded as the current version. I tried reuploading, but it says that it's identical to the current version (which it's not, since it's showing the old version as the current version). I've tried reverting it to the straightened one, but it won't let me do that either. I'm not sure why it's doing this, would someone be able to help with troubleshooting? Thank you! Copyright help regarding File:Jazmine-sullivan-heaux-tales.jpg

The uploader of File:Jazmine-sullivan-heaux-tales.jpg did not provide a valid and suitable tag on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (8 January 2021).

I have made contact with the copyright owner (Sony Music Entertainment) to seek permission for a new file to be uploaded with appropriate links. What will occur if permission is not granted by 15 January 2021?

--Te Karere (talk) 11:15, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

@Te Karere: The file has already been deleted as a copyright violation, I find it unlikely the copyright owner will freely license this album cover. Please note that the copyright owner simply giving you permission to use it here is not enough, the owner has to email COM:OTRS to confirm permission to license this freely. You may however be able to use this work under the fair use doctrine in local projects, see w:WP:NFC on the English Wikipedia. Dylsss (talk) 19:37, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

How can I avoid that your AntiCompositeBot delete 6 files I've posted at 10thJanuary? Please advise me clearly what might be not compliant with your rules.

Here user Ze Matos David, from Portugal (josehdavid@gmail.com). I'm trying to create a new page in Wikipedia describing the biography and main scientific work of a Portuguese Neuropsychiatrist (1914-2003), twice honored by his medical community, and for that job I woud like to include 6 images, which have been carried yesterday on Wikimedia Commons. The corresponding 6 files are nominated below, as well as the source of each image. As stated in the files, 4 of the images are simply fotos from the family archive and as I belong to that family (I'm son-in-law of Dr Azevedo Fernandes) I have full access to them. The other two are from the public domain, one from a current Portuguese newspaper and the other from a specialized medical newspaper with which Dr Azevedo Fernandes currently colaborated. So, there´s no issue about any copyright or any kind of violation. May be the description was not clear to the AntiCompositeBot due to the fact that was in Portuguese? Please kindly help me to keep those files, the images are significant for the page that's being prepared. The files:

Looking forward to hearing from You, I remain very grateful. Kind regards José David — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ze Matos David (talk • contribs) 16:04, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

@Ze Matos David: the problem is not the language of the description, but the lack of machine-readable “copyright tags” (templates) stating why the images are free in both Portugal and the United States. The photos are certainly free in Portugal, as far as I can tell, but I’m not sure about the USA: anonymous, unpublished works get 120 years of protection after their date of creation there. Do you know who the photographers were, and when they died? Old Portuguese photographs that were published before 1989 can be tagged with {{PD-Portugal-URAA}}.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:59, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
@Ze Matos David: on the ones from 1989 or later, if you are in contact with either the photographer or (for those no longer alive) their heirs, we can probably work this out. See COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 02:12, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a photo of an actor from their websites/agent websites or their official social media accounts

Hello Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

I want to upload a photo to an actor wiki but I am not so sure about the copyrights. I've read something about Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline but I didn't really understand if it is applicable for actor photos. If it is applicable, how can I upload and use the template?

I am new to adding information & data to Wikipedia, so I am sorry if I am one of them who asks same questions.

Best Regards, Yasoyasin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasoyasin (talk • contribs) 17:30, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

@Yasoyasin: Here on Wikimedia Commons, we don't allow fair use content. In terms of using a non-free image in a biography of a living person on the English Wikipedia, this does not normally meet the first criterion w:WP:NFCC#1 as a free image could reasonably be created, also see w:WP:NFC#UUI. comunidad.madrid license advice

I'm currently putting together an article for a new Spanish hospital at en:Hospital de Emergencias Enfermera Isabel Zendal and would like to include an image. Unfortunately, I'm not in the area right now and won't be for the foreseeable future so I can't take one myself, however, the official website of the Community of Madrid hosts a great many possible candidates, see this news item for an example. Their aviso legal, under the section Intellectual property and reproduction of content (Propiedad intelectual y reproducción de contenidos states as follows:

The intellectual property rights of this Internet channel, the domain www.comunidad.madrid, all the sub-domains, its graphic design and the identity elements it contains, are owned by the Community of Madrid.

The Community of Madrid will allow the reuse of all the content and data disseminated through this site, unless otherwise indicated, provided that the content of the information is not altered, the meaning of the information is not modified or distorted, the source is mentioned, the date of extraction or use of the information is indicated, and it cannot be deduced that the Community of Madrid sponsors or supports the activity in which the information is reused.

The right to re-use shall not apply to content that is subject to intellectual or industrial property, to the personal data protection regime or to other rights, goods or interests in accordance with current legislation.

As I have been burned before I'd like some feedback on this. Does this put me in the clear for uploading these works to Commons, assuming I follow the specified rules? Is there possibly even a template for this source, like there is for the Diario de Madrid? Thanks in advance for your expertise. AngryHarpy (talk) 17:49, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

@AngryHarpy: Unfortunately those terms do not satisfy one of our core requirements, which is that the license must allow alterations (otherwise known as derivative works) of the image (see COM:L). You won't be able to use these images on Commons. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:07, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

inserting image

I want to insert an image that is my property. wikimedia says there is a problem of copyright. This photo has been published in a book on my work but is my property. What do I have to do ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarianneVictoireLouiseParmantier (talk • contribs) 09:02, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

  • @MarianneVictoireLouiseParmantier: Is this about an image you already uploaded where someone raised an issue, or one you want to upload?
  • When you say the image is "my property" are you saying you own the physical copy or you own he intellectual property rights?
  • To whom does the published book attribute the photo?
  • Is your account name the same as the name by which you are generally known? If not, is your actual identity a secret?
Answers to those will help us work out how to proceed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:43, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

This file :

is turned 90 degrees to the right, kan somebody correct this? Kind regards 16:38, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

@Saschaporsche: The file looks correctly-oriented to me. In any case, you can request rotation of a file by clicking the "request rotation" link just under the image. – BMacZero (🗩) 00:14, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
I see the main file-page preview not simply rotated, but distorted into the complementary aspect ratio, while the small history thumbnail (like the one shown here) looks correct. In Safari the file itself displays rotated but with correct proportions, while Firefox shows it upright. Downloaded to my system, its desktop icon is upright but it previews rotated, and likewise opens rotated in my default viewer. If I place it on a LibreOffice page or open it in Photoshop it’s upright. My guess offhand is that it contains multiple, conflicting sets of coördinate info that get resolved differently depending on the rendering program or utility. Can Rotatebot clean up bad info, or might it just make things worse?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:17, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
That's very interesting. I tried hitting it with {{rotate|resetexif}}, we'll see if that helps. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:26, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Deleted logo of Film Fest Ghent

Dear Sir/Madam

I work at Film Fest Ghent and I am currently updating our Wikipedia (Dutch & English) from scratch. I really want to upload our logo on our pages. But when I upload our logo it gets deleted duo to violation of the copyright rules. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FFG_hoofdlogo_EN_blauwgroen.jpg)

This, to me, seems absurd. How can I upload our logo without being blocked?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards Sven — Preceding unsigned comment added by SvenHollebeke (talk • contribs) 11:56, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

@SvenHollebeke: Because this is an image that is freely available on the internet, you need to prove that you are who you say you are and actually have the right to release it under a free license. An easy way to do that would be to publish a short statement on the organization's official website or social media. Another option is to follow the process at COM:OTRS. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:21, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Translation

Is there an automatic translation of a German text into other languages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rugif (talk • contribs) 18:46, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that we do not have such capability on the wiki, but many of our messages are already translated into the German language if you select that language in the second section of Special:Preferences. I use Google's translation capability to good effect, both via their website and built in to Google Chrome.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:43, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
@Rugif and Jeff G.: I believe Rugif was asking about translating out of German, not into German. In my experience, Google Translate is the best tool of this sort, and useful on talk pages, but please don't (for example) create Wikipedia articles that are simply machine translations. They are usually good enough to give the gist, but they are not great. If someone wants a machine translation of the German, let them use Google Translate or some other tool and get what they know to be a machine translation. - Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

unclear request to provide author, source, license

A file I have uploaded has been tagged as needing more information. As far as I can see, all the information required is already there, so I do not no what to do.

This concerns https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amarasi_dialects.pdf

I am asked to provide author and source.

The creator of this file is properly indicated, as is the source and the license.

Please indicate what further information would be necessary Jasy jatere (talk) 08:16, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

@Jasy jatere: Your upload doesn't seem to match the original. Are you sure this is a work by Owen Edwards? Also, I can't seem to see any evidence of a release of Owen Edwards' work to the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. pandakekok9 08:27, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
the link was indeed the wrong one. This was a c&p error. I have now corrected the link to https://github.com/langsci/228/blob/master/relevant/figures/Amarasis-LinLib.pdf
https://zenodo.org/record/3700413/files/main.pdf?download=1 is the book which contains the map. The book is referenced via its DOI. That book is licensed as CC-BY, which is indicated on page iv in the front matter of the book. This includes all the components. I run the publishing company, so I know. The text reads "© 2020, Owen Edwards Published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Licence (CC BY 4.0)". I have now corrected the license statement from CC-BY-SA to CC-BY. Please let me know if this is sufficient now Jasy jatere (talk) 09:40, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
A couple of other files of mine have also been tagged. A list can be found on my talk page. The tagger User:EugeneZelenko does not really give reasons beyond RTFM, which is not helpful. I am happy to provide information, but the request for information needs to be sufficiently precise so that I know what to provide. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasy jatere (talk • contribs) 09:41, 14 January 2021‎ (UTC)

Many uploads of this user, like File:YakkhaRegion.png, File:AikanaKwazaMap.png, File:YauyosQuechua.pdf, are based on existing maps. Such source may be commercial or public domain, so it must known to find out copyrights status or resulting maps. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:39, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
I am fine to do this for the maps where there is indeed a third party component. Many maps you tagged, however, have no such component, so I do not know what you want me to do there. See list on my talk page Jasy jatere (talk) 17:32, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Regarding adding a picture to an article.

Hi, i wanted to add a picture to an article Zeyan Shafiq on wikipedia, but as far as i learned i have to upload the picture first to wikimedia commons, i earlier uploaded pictures from google which were not useful and they got rejected stating that i need to have permission, i am new here so i have no idea of how do i do that. So after enquiring about the same i asked few editors and i asked them that what if i email the subject of the the article for his picture, so that i could contribute, they agreed and said it is okay you can proceed. So I emailed the person and asked for his pictures, now he has sent me few unique pictures that are not present anywhere on the web. How do i proceed now? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hums4r (talk • contribs) 13:36, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

@Hums4r: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them from you, and have the photographer(s) upload them directly, license them on their websites or social media, or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. Edit wikiHow page

Hi!

My name is Marc, I'm project manager at wikiHow. I noticed that most of our translated pages about wikiHow are outdated. I would like to translate some languages from the English version some of the other languages. Is that allowed as it's a company's page? Are they some special points I need to take care about ? I'm pretty familiar with the code as at wikiHow we use the same wiki engine, but I won't use a lot of fancy stuff. Mostly text and some links, maybe 1 photo.

Thanks ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marc wH (talk • contribs) 22:32, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Do Google books watermarks have to be removed before uploading to commons, if so, is there an easy way to do so? P,TO 19104 (pls ping!) 23:30, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

@P,TO 19104: Hi, and welcome. The watermarks don't have to be removed, but it's nice to have them removed from images we want to use on projects like Wikipedia. How to upload a smaller version of an existing image?

I want to upload a new version of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-simple.svg with a width of 100px. What do I need to know to do this? Naddruf (talk) 05:56, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

@Naddruf: Set the width attribute of the <svg> element into 100px, and the height attribute to 115px. I'm not sure why you would want to reupload it as 100x115px though. You can always pipe the file link to 100px to render a 100px PNG thumbnail of that SVG. pandakekok9 06:45, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: What is the process for uploading the image? How do I deal with attribution and copyright? The reason I want to upload it at 100px is for demonstration purposes at Simple:Help:Images. I would prefer if everything could be slightly condensed. Naddruf (talk) 06:49, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
If you're going to upload it as a new file, copy the whole wikitext of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-simple.svg and replace the source field of {{Information}} with File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-simple.svg. Always keep the license and author which is CC-BY-SA-3.0 and Wikimedia Foundation respectively.

If you're going to overwrite the file, you don't have to worry about copyright and attribution. You just need to provide a meaningful upload summary (like "resized to 100px"). pandakekok9 07:13, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

COM:L Commons accepts images of text in a general typeface and of simple geometric shapes, even if it happens to be a recent trademarked logo, on the grounds that such an image is not sufficiently creative to attract copyright protection. The-Copyright-Enforcer (talk) 15:58, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
@TimmyCruz953: You can use {{PD-textlogo}} because this is a logo consisting only of simple text. Replace the "Remove this line and insert a license instead" template with that one. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:33, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

Adding an Image

How do I replace an image on an existing wikipedia article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RYLELT7 (talk • contribs) 19:03, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

  • @RYLELT7: Definitely easier to do in wikitext that in the Visual Editor. Please remove these pics

segundo a própria wikipedia, se o dono pedir, é verificado se ele realmente foi o dono da hospedagem e então se apaga, eu vi vários usuários fazendo o mesmo e seus pedidos foram aceitos, favor apague.

according to wikipedia itself, if the owner asks, it is checked if he really owned the hosting and then goes off, I saw several users doing the same and their requests were accepted, please delete it.

  • @Josadaik: I don't see any valid reason to delete these longstanding images. Yes, we would have allowed the uploader to request deletion within a few days of upload, but this has been over six years. If we allowed this, then "irrevocable license" would mean nothing. - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
—capmo (talk) 04:04, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
  • I am not sure what you mean by "if he really owned the hosting and then goes off" and the Portuguese -- a language I read reasonably well but don't speak -- does not appear any clearer. - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
I think he/she intended to say "...it is checked if he really was the original uploader and if so, the file is removed". —capmo (talk) 04:04, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
@Capmo: Maybe, thought that is certainly not what "hospedagem" or "hosting" means..
In any case, I'm quite confident there is no such policy, and "Wikipedia says" means nothing without a link. Anyway, Wikipedia does nto set policies for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 08:45, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Todas as fotos possuem a marca de copyright — Preceding unsigned comment added by Josadaik (talk • contribs) 21:34, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

That's right, but you granted a free licence for them which cannot be revoked. So we are allowed to keep those photos. De728631 (talk) 21:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Replacing an Image

If a picture is taken on social media of a person, and the person themselves posted that picture, am I allowed to upload to Wikimedia commons? There should be no copyright violation, right? Since no one holds a license to the picture.

No. Photographs are automatically copyrighted to the photographer, so we need their permission to upload such images. It doesn't matter if the person depicted posted the image because even if they were the copyright holder, we would still need their consent to use image. Please don't upload photos from the internet unless there is a free licence at the source page. De728631 (talk) 04:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

I tried to delete https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:CountriesRecognizingSouthernSudan.svg&oldid=519176559 as it's an outdated version of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CountriesRecognizingSouthSudan.svg but got rejected. They were not duplicates; it would need to go through a DR. Files like that should be considered "dated" / "time dependent" rather than "outdated" so have their dates as part of their name. Then we maintain a history of the recognition by time.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:09, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Requesting to delete all my Uploads/Contributions

Hello,

I want to delete all my uploads because of some personal reasons. I did not find any options in my login to delete the pictures. Kindly delete all my contributions. This is urgent.

Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinay.hegde2 (talk • contribs) 07:36, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

@Vinay.hegde2: I don't see anything the least bit personal about the three photos of yours we have on Commons. None of them are recent uploads, and it is unlikely that a courtesy deletion will be granted. In the future, please be careful not to grant an "irrevocable license" if you don't mean to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 03:58, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

It is rare that an image becomes "obsolete" in any terms relevant to Commons. It is usually an accurate indication of how things were at the time it was taken, which remains of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 03:59, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Images

Are all the images uploaded on Wikimedia Commons reusable in all Counries (i.e. Italy) and published on a personal website? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 93.41.16.252 (talk) 17:54, 17 January 2021‎ (UTC)

@93.41.16.252: In general, yes, with the possible exception of some files that are public domain due to their age and published in countries with a shorter copyright protection duration than Italy. You can find specific details about each image's licensing on that image's page. Images that might not be public domain in Italy will say "This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus N years or fewer", where N is less than 70. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:17, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
I must correct myself slightly - this is not a problem in Italy because of a rule called the en:rule of the shorter term. Therefore, all images on Commons should be freely usable in Italy. However, this problem might occur in countries that do not have such a rule. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:23, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Also: at any given moment, there are doubtless numerous images on Commons that do not belong here. People constantly upload copyright violations and while we are quite diligent about tracking those down, we are never going to achieve perfection in that respect. Use common sense; if in serious doubt ask here about a specific image. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Copyright Troll? I have used a Commons image on my website and now a firm wants a refund for copyright infringment!

I have used one Wikimedia Commons image and a recently a legal firm writes me that the same image that I have used belongs to one of their customers and claims a refund. I believe that they are not aware that this image is on Commons. What should I do? I have trusted Wikimedia Common and now I face a potential financial loss. Who is right? I have added my credit to some of the pictures from the March on Washington.

Many, but not all, of the photographs made at the March on Washington were made by me--Rowland Scherman. I was hired by USIA to cover the March for the US Government. Some of the pictures had credits, but some didn't. I added my credit, as well as I could to the images that weren't credited as "artist". My additions have been proofread but not validated. I write herein to alert the Wikipedia team to my addition to the images. I hope I did it correctly. Thanks for following up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Motamanx (talk • contribs) 16:29, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

  • @Motamanx: Great photos, honored to have you here. I didn't look through the batch, but I'm guessing here is typical, and you didn't really get it right, so I'm glad you asked. Replacing the structured-data caption with your photo credit is a poor idea, especially because, with all due respect, you are is 'not so famous that the main interest of the photo is the fact that you took it, and I see you have been (appropriately) reverted.
  • I tried to follow up your intent by this edit to the "author" field; I hope that is satisfactory. For author it will now say, "Rowland Scherman: this public-domain photo is by Rowland Scherman and it would be appropriate courtesy to credit it as such. Apparently that fact is missing from the uploaded metadata from the National Archives." I strongly suggest that you get this sorted out with the National Archives to correct their records, because this scenario will presumably be repeated every time someone gets the images from them. Similarly for other photos.
  • One note on that wording: I'm sure you know that for images in the public domain, attribution is strictly a moral responsibility, not (as with a CC-BY license or similar) a legal one, and I have worded accordingly. Again, I suggest you edit similarly for other photos. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Leftover Wikidata Infobox after category move

There were two categories for the same building, so I put all the images in the 'good' one and changed the 'bad' one to a category redirect page. The Wikidata infobox is still sitting on the redirect page, however, and I am not sure what to do to make it go to the preferred category page. The new category is Category:United States Post Office (Yellowstone National Park) and the redirect page with the Wikidata infobox is sitting at Category:Mammoth Hot Springs Post Office. Jeffrey Beall (talk) 12:20, 26 January 2021 (UTC).

Hi, I fixed it for you. For future reference: add {{Wikidata Infobox}} to the new category, and change the category under "Other sites" on Wikidata to link to the new category. Then remove the infobox from the old one (by removing the template). Hope that helps. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:33, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Falls Maps WWI

I have come across a map on your link - https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=32103024 - in my research into my wife's father's involvement in WWI. This map has been useful in that quest but I would also like to access a map showing the country further north. For preference this would show what is now known as the Golan Heights and the area leading into Damascus in Syria. I have tried to find such a map but have been unable to do so. Is there a list of Falls Maps and URLs that might contain such a map? If so, can you let me know where or how I can access it? Thanking you in anticipation. Hello. While I don't know of any particular list or website, Category:Maps of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign has several maps by Falls. Some of them about the battle of Meggido provide an overview of the area northeast of the Sea of Galilee. De728631 (talk) 22:55, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

uploading an image file

Hi there, I would like to upload the front cover of the latest issue of Rhythm magazine to the Wiki page on Rhythm mag, and I have been unable to do so. I am the publisher of the magazine and I assumed that would therefore be allowed. Can this not be done? Thanks, Ondine — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mermaid1971 (talk • contribs) 10:14, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

@Mermaid1971: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the images may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also en:WP:COI.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:23, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Using Content on youtube/Twitch/podcasting?

My name is Richard Andrew Wyman, and I am interested in using content from the commons. However, I am not sure what options are available to me.

In short, I would like to be able to read content daily in Youtube videos and stream on Twitch, and maybe a podcast in a calm and relaxing manner for a global audience. A way to help them relax and perhaps learn or stay informed perhaps at the same time. I studied Radio in Canada a few years ago, and have a basic understanding of copyright law. However, I have been living in the EU (Germany) for the past 5 years and would like to avoid any copyright issues, while also having the ability to promote the submitted work of content creators here.

What content would you recommend I use or avoid to stay on the safe side?

Any advice or ideas you have for me would be welcomed.

Thank you for taking the time to read my message, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

- Richard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard Reads (talk • contribs) 13:57, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

@Richard Reads: In general, you should be able to use any image on Commons for your purposes, but some may require you to give credit to the author. Each image has a section beneath it that describes the terms under which it can be used. See COM:REUSE for plenty of details. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:37, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
It's worth noting that some licenses might be wrong, especially for files that were uploaded very recently, so you should try to verify that they are correct, as mentioned on COM:REUSE. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:43, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Mutant Hunt.jpg

OK so this is a movie poster from http://fullmoonstreaming.com/movie/mutant-hunt-movie I know I do not own any rights to this. However I want to use it for a page I am creating with the same title. How can I upload a movie poster without it being deleted? I know it belongs to Full Moon Features but I am really just trying to bring eyes to a movie of theirs that has yet to be created on Wikipedia. Clearly I am not trying to obtain any self gain from using this image. When I try to upload a non-free image it says I have to attach it to a page that is already created. I am in the process of having the page reviewed and getting the "ok" for publishing. I would love to contribute more down the road but I feel as if it is impossible to upload an image on here that I did not take myself. Any pointers would be helpful. I have read through the wikimedia upload pages as well but clearly I am still doing something wrong. Thank you!

--SeanRMull (talk) 14:42, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

@SeanRMull: Because this image is copyrighted and without a free license, we can't accept it on Commons. We can only accept images that are legally usable by anyone for any purpose. This does mean that there are many images that cannot be uploaded to Commons. You'll need to get your draft page approved first, and then at that point you will be able to upload the image to Wikipedia (not Commons) as a non-free image as you already discovered, using Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:27, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Correct attribution for scientific data analyzed by me (and a friend) but acquired by someone else

Hi,

With the help of a fellow wikipedian, we have analyzed a scan of a lizard and created a visualization of its skeleton. The raw data's copyright holder is the California Academy of Sciences(CC-BY-NC). We have downloaded it from Morphosource, and we have the names of the technicians who produced the scan. What would be the correct way to attribute the final visualization?

Thanks in advance for your time,

Cheers,

Djigr — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djigr (talk • contribs) 19:09, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello Djigr, unfortunately non-commercial licenses are not compatible with Wikimedia Commons so you cannot upload it here under the terms of CC-BY-NC, you also cannot upload it under the terms of no derivatives or any other license which inhibits its ability to be reused by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. Attribution can be given simply by crediting the author and source when uploading the file. Dylsss (talk) 21:05, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick answer. I was wondering as this visualization is a new work on its own, is it tied to the copyright of the raw data? We would be okay with releasing it as a CC-BY, as one can't reobtain the raw data from our visualization, but we don't know if it would interfere with the raw data's copyright. Cheers Djigr (talk) 01:14, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Djigr, this would usually be a derivative work, meaning the new work would still be subject to the non-commercial terms and thus incompatible with Commons. That said, raw data or information is not copyrightable in the US, however I am unsure if this would apply to the data of a 3D scan and whether or not there would be intellectual property vested in it, if so, it wouldn't be ok to upload it here. Personally, the data of a 3D scan of an animal is a creative and original work; different to statistics or facts which generally aren't used to display an artistic work like a 3D model, moreover the raw data itself is making up the whole visualisation itself, therefore I would lean towards the data being copyrightable. That said, I am not knowledgeable enough about this to really give you a concrete answer, sorry. Dylsss (talk) 18:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Djigr, you may also want to ask at COM:VP/C, but I do believe that this is a derivative work, so I do think you would have to have permission from the copyright holder. Dylsss (talk) 23:32, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Is this public domain?

It comes from the US Office of Alien property - which means it was seized and confiscated by the US Government, I think it's PD but am curious if others agree? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nLk3uwZy5M Victorgrigas (talk) 14:24, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

@Victorgrigas: Seizure of an asset by the government wouldn't have any effect on its copyright status, which would make this recording still copyrighted. But perhaps it is possible that the recording was captured by the Office for an investigation rather than confiscated from someone; that would make it public domain if it could be proved. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:39, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
It's not a normal (police) seizure, this was an american nazi group after world war 2. I wonder if there were special circumstances because of that department? Victorgrigas (talk) 18:48, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
@Victorgrigas: I know of no such exception, but if you can find any evidence of one please provide it. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:34, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
This is what I can find on-wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Public_domain#German_World_War_II_images and according to this https://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=8228&context=ylj "enemy" works become property of the US Government, which can be licensed if I read correctly? Victorgrigas (talk) 19:45, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, that is interesting reading. The WP page cites [3] which has some good details on page 3. That says "In 1962, Congress returned most of the remaining seized copyrights to the copyright owners in their countries of origin". However, the URAA contained an exception that copyrights for such works would not be restored. That seems to indicate that {{PD-1996}} might be appropriate, with some extra notes. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:02, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
It occurs to me that this work would have actually been published in the United States, not Germany, and therefore would not have needed restoration from the URAA. That would imply no special PD status, but {{PD-US-not renewed}} might apply. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:17, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
OK! Great, thanks. Here it is:
German - American Bund Rally Address by Its Leader Fritz Kuhn
@BMacZero: Why would that make it public domain?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:45, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Can I remove redirect and start working on spearate, higher level page?

Hi team,

A newbie here so I thought I ask before making mess.

I've noticed that Deprivation index page redirects to Multiple deprivation index. The latter can be understood as particular example of the former. I would like to build a bit of content around first page. Can I simply delete redirect and start doing so? Of course the page on MDI will be linked to the new page.

Permission for photos

Hello. Recently I had images that were deleted here on the commons. These images had been uploaded by me and were used on my User page in Wikipedia, and they were of me playing football. They had been requested for deletion because the editor could not find the data to show that I had uploaded them from a camera, where I explained that they had been emailed to me by a relative, who originally took the photo. I was told to go to OTRS to have my relative grant permission to use the photos. However, since the relative gave me the photos, they have since passed away, and I am left here without any idea as to what to do now. I also originally claimed ownership of the photo's, as by then they had passed and I assumed they were mine because, well they're of me. Can someone help me figure out what to do? Thanks--CycloneFootball71 (talk) 16:49, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

File version wont change

I was trying to upload a modified version of File:Chandragiri River at kottody kudumboor.jpg, so it wouldn't have the smudge in the bottom left, but it didn't seem to change. I reverted my change and tried to upload the cropped file independently, but it was blocked as a duplicate upload. Copyrighted Photo that I own

Hello, I am trying to update Polly Trottenberg's Wikipedia Page with a new photo. I work for the New York City Department of Transportation which owns her headshot. Her current photo is also owned by the New York City Department of Transportation so this has been done before. How can I prove to Wikipedia that I own the rights to this photo as an employee of NYC DOT?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by HannahMoch (talk • contribs) 19:00, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

You cannot plausibly own this photo or its copyright. If the headshot is a work of a employee of the New York City Department of Transportation then it follows that the copyright is owned by the City New York. Ruslik0 (talk) 20:08, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
@HannahMoch: Simply being an employee of the DOT clearly is not enough to let you release rights, but on the other hand, you may be in an excellent position to get the City to either free-license the photo or place it in the public domain. If you think you can do that, say so, and I'll explain further what Commons would need from them.
Also: note that the current photo at en:Polly Trottenberg has an OTRS ticket User:Fitnr, I see you are still active on en-wiki, can you explain what you did to get rights, or should we contact the OTRS team for the history of this? - Jmabel ! talk 05:21, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Purchasing Copyrights

Has there ever been a person or a group that has purchased the copyright of an image for the purpose of placing the image in the public domain on Commons? Charles Juvon (talk) 18:20, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

  • You might contact the OTRS team about this. They probably can't name names, but they could probably confirm if this has happened, and possibly pass any questions you might have along to such a person. (If that wasn't what you wanted and you were simply asking "has this ever occurred," I'd be pretty comfortable guessing that out of many millions of photos here, that has happened at least once.) - Jmabel ! talk 05:38, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

multiple date changes

Is there a tool (similar to Cat-a-lot?) that allows date changes on multiple files? For example, all of the Apollo 9 images that have been uploaded to the Commons have a date of 2015 (I presume the date of upload), but the mission occurred in March 1969. Jstuby (talk) 17:01, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Old photograph questions

I would like to upload a photograph of the Edmond Territorial Schoolhouse, as it was in the 1890s. I can't affirm to who took the photo and when exactly it was published, other than that it must have been in the 1890s based on the facts around the building (it was built in 1889 and sold and remodeled in 1900). I think this is public domain but I'm not sure. Jdphenix (talk) 01:13, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

I chatted with some folks on Discord and reached the conclusion that based on what I know at the time, the photo shouldn't be uploaded. Jdphenix (talk) 04:15, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
Is this from the US? If yes, all photographs made before 1926 are public domain and could be freely uploaded --Taktaal (talk)
That's true. I'm just waiting on some information from the people that found that photo that will be able to confirm the publication date with something other than my personal knowledge. Jdphenix (talk) 01:31, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
That is unfortunately false. All photographs published before 1926 are public domain. Photographs first published after 2002 by authors dead for 70 years are also public domain, whereas many in-between are also public domain, but are harder to verify and separate from those that still in copyright.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:49, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

I wanted to upload a lot of of photos to Commons in a short time

I have taken thousands of photos since 15 September 2020. I wanted to upload a lot of of photos to Commons in a short time. So my question is: how should I do that?--Kai3952 (talk) 06:27, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

  • Not so much an answer here as an aside: uploading as such is usually the easy part. Adding decent descriptions and categories is the hard part. In my experience uploading large numbers of photos, the time to properly fill out the description and choose the right categories is such that I'm almost never gated in the actual uploads. - Jmabel ! talk 07:18, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Everything that took creativity to create is under copyright. This would include the text of a test. Whether it's public or under restricted access doesn't matter for copyright. Also the method of copying doesn't matter, it's the same whether you use copy & paste, take a picture, or copy the text manually. Without permission of the person who created the test you can't legally copy it. --Taktaal (talk) 09:49, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

National register

I would like my photos to show up on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Riley County under Downtown Manhattan Historic District, Kansas and also Geary County, Kansas on the page National Register of Historic Places listings under Junction City Downtown Historic District. I've added the categories but they are not showing up on that page. Thanks for any assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SharonPapierdreams (talk • contribs) 14:43, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Adding categories to your images does not make them turn up in Wikipedia, e.g. at en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Riley County. Categories are containers to sort images with a common topic. In order to make an image appear in a Wikipedia article, you need to edit the article and enter the image. However, the National Register of Historic Places at the English Wikipedia are designed with a special templated code that only allows for one representative image to be shown for an entry. You may add a link to the Commons category though in the relevant row of the table, like |commonscat=National Register of Historic Places in Riley County, Kansas.
And please do not wrap the <nowiki></nowiki> tags around your signature ~~~~. <nowiki></nowiki> means that Wiki-code shall not be executed, but you want your automated signature to be created by typing the four tilde characters. De728631 (talk) 15:02, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. I have successfully added more images to other categories on these same pages, not sure why these are different. SharonPapierdreams (talk) 16:01, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

How to find available categories for a botanical garden

Hi, I have submitted photos of plants from the New York Botanical Garden, and an editor suggested "Pinales in the New York Botanical Garden" to me as a category, rather than just New York Botanical Garden. That is great, but then I had a fern, and I had to guess "Ferns in the New York Botanical Garden" and, luckily, it was indeed a category. My question is: how can I see a list of choices of categories for the New York Botanical Garden (or any botanical garden), because now I have a plant which is neither a Pinale nor a fern. Copyright help regarding File:Prof. Dr. Thomas Vogel.jpg

Hallo!

--Taktaal (talk) 18:51, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

How do I redirect one file to another?

A new version of File:Celestia.png was uploaded, which I reverted because this file was used in a widely-used template unrelated to Celestia. I then uploaded the new version to File:Celestia-logo-new.png. The template in question has now been fixed to point to a different filename, and File:Celestia.png has been changed back to the new version. As such File:Celestia-logo-new.png should be redirected to File:Celestia.png, but I'm unable to do this. SevenSpheresCelestia (talk) 19:10, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Well, actually I just tried it again and it kind of worked, but clicking on File:Celestia-logo-new.png still doesn't take you to File:Celestia.png. In other words it behaves like a soft redirect. SevenSpheresCelestia (talk) 19:12, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Warnings and bans: What do they mean, exactly? Also, files.

I have several warnings on my account for copyright violations and stuff. It says I have a final warning, which I think means that if I do one more oopsie I'll get banned. How does the whole warning system work and how do bans work? Is it possible to get rid of warnings?

Also, I have some old files that I uploaded which I regret uploading and would like to get rid of. However, I don't want to delete them since I want to be able to access them later in case I need to. Is there a way to, say, "hide" a file? Like, deleting it, but you can un-delete it later? Probably not, but I'd think it would be cool if it existed. Does it? And can you delete your own file(s) without sending a deletion request? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeoI07 (talk • contribs) 21:07, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Constant Server Hangups (Error 502)

Hi, we're new to Wikimedia and hope to publish more content for the decentralised social media space that people call the Fediverse. We've been trying to upload files for days now. We've had three successful uploads but the other 500 attempts we get this error page from Wikimedia:

Error
Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes.
See the error message at the bottom of this page for more information.

At the bottom of the page it says:

Request from - via cp3052.esams.wmnet, ATS/8.0.8
Error: 502, Server Hangup at 2021-01-26 11:41 GMT

We direct your attention to "Server Hangup", why is the server hanging up? I've had success three times, out of literally hundreds of attempts (see category 'Fediverse' for our successful uploads). We've never heard of Error 502 until coming to Wikimedia Commons so this is a problem on your end. Please help. Dick smith fair go (talk) 13:09, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

FAA Airport Diagram

Am I allowed to upload a updated version of a airport diagram from the FAA website, or is does the person who does it have to have permission from the FAA/be a FAA employee? (ElToAn123 (talk) 16:28, 26 January 2021 (UTC))

Image from an out-of-copyright book

If a book is no longer under copyright, can the images be used in Wikipedia articles? I am interested in general, but asking specifically about History of Detroit which contains pictures of people. Leschnei (talk) 19:28, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

As the book and all images in it were published before 1926, they all are now in public domain in USA. Use {{Pd-1923}} template to mark them. Ruslik (talk) 20:47, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
Thank you - will do. Leschnei (talk) 23:54, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

I usually upload images using the upload wizard. At what point do I add the {{Pd-1923}} template? Leschnei (talk) 00:42, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

  1. {{PD-US-old}} is probably better than {{Pd-1923}}, since the date 1923 is no longer relevant.
  2. If you can't get that via the Wizard, just edit immediately after uploading. If you are uploading a large number where you need to do this, you might find it worth your time to learn VisualFileChange. - Jmabel ! talk 07:56, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Which language is this sign?

Sígne des tránsitte

The file is occupying one cat for themselves (Category:Unidentified-language signs) since we do not know what language this is. Probably the uploader does know but we have not heard of them any news. Some time ago I asked at the Occitan WP, as it seemed to be the most probable language to my inner world of ignorance, but them people did not even answer me... Any opinions? --E4024 (talk) 15:56, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Google translate and others identify this as Galician, but the translations don't make sense, so this is probably a hoax. --Magnus (talk) 16:20, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Since it is being used in the Occitan Wikipedia I assume it is the Occitan language. It's quite close to Galician, so I'm not suprised that Google Translate gave that result. De728631 (talk) 10:48, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
It is being used there because I posted it there. --E4024 (talk) 00:08, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
Take a look at the uploader's global contributions in around 09 Jan 2013 at https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=Nachiiitox15. Talking about a language "Dakars", supposedly a variant of Spanish found in Chile, or something. They also uploaded File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-dks.png in the "Dakars" language. If there is no evidence that this language exists, then I doubt that much would be lost by deleting both files. --ghouston (talk) 02:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
A couple of their Dakars-related uploads were already deleted, although on copyright grounds: Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Nachiiitox15. --ghouston (talk) 02:45, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
A web search for "Idioma Dakars" returns nothing of interest. --ghouston (talk) 02:47, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Click on the photo. If it is held on Wikimedia Commons (which is the default), then it's freely licensed. All you need to do is acknowledge where you've got it from and credit the photographer. There is no need for a permission if it's held on Commons. Schwede66 00:15, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society Logo and Flickr Images

Hi, NRAS is a UK based charity helping people with arthritis. I am trying to get the logo, but can't find out the license. If I get it from their website, it it allowed? If not, can I have some suggestions on to how to get the logo.

On to my second point, I am trying to get some updated images from Flickr of British TV presenters, and Commons won't accept photos that have a Creative Commons License. Can you help me out with that too please?

HyacinthBucket55 (talk) 10:58, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

I'm afraid but the logo of the NRAS seems to be too complex to be not copyrighted, so you can't upload it without a permission from the copyright holder. The NRAS does not seem to offer any licence at all, so the logo is non-free and cannot be used.
As to the Flickr images, can you please provide some links to those photos at Flickr that you can't upload? Otherwise we wouldn't know the individual problem. De728631 (talk) 11:45, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

I am deeply disturbed with Wikipedia

I just read your definition of acupuncture, an age old science, that is more reliable than modern medicine as it takes the whole being into account, body, mind and spirit. How dare you try to distort people perceptions of how to maintain their health at a time when we need it most, you need to maintain your integrity!!!!!!!!!!!

If you persist, I will go out of my way to make sure that as many people as I can reach do not use you, that you go to the trash heap of history remembered as the company that was an awesonme idea but could not maintain their integrity in the face of corporate greed.

Uploading photos and Videos on public domain

Hello, please I need someone who I will personally have a contact with him to guide me on uploading Nigerian files that are currently in public domain, I am familiar with public domain, but I need to have a talk with an experience user from Commons regarding the above mentioned.Anass-kokoTalk 19:15, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

  • @Anasskoko: By "personally," do you mean you need to be literally face-to-face with someone or some other specific requirement? If not, someone should be able to help you right here. If the latter is useful, say so and we can start. - Jmabel ! talk 05:32, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: sorry for the late reply, I think we can have the communication here it is alright, I have encounter some videos that are related to Nigerian History, Hausa, Yoroba, Igbo and others, which have been created before 1960, so here is what I want to know further;
  • Can I upload those videos in Commons as public domain videos?
  • Can I extract important shots from the videos to become pictures? To be uploaded as public domain pictures.
  • And during a visit to a library I find out some books that has Nigerian pictures that are public domain, my question here is, can I use a Camera to snap those pictures from those books and upload them to Commons as public domain pictures, by providing reference to the books whom the pictures were extracted?
By uploading those videos and pictures it will surely help Nigeria historical articleses, heroes and others, so I did not suppose to do it up head without consulting an experience Editor who will guide me upon this project, because there will be many Videos and pictures to be uploaded, and during the process of the upload I will like you to take a closer look at the work for a successful good work.Anass-kokoTalk 13:04, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
  1. @Anasskoko: Are these things are, indeed, in the public domain? I have no idea, I don't know a thing about Nigerian copyright law, and if you are from there and know the law, great, you are ahead of me on that. If you are at all uncertain, I strongly suggest starting a discussion at Commons:Village pump/copyright where the copyright experts tend to hang out. Otherwise, you might waste a lot of work uploading content others will have to delete.
  2. If the materials are, indeed, public domain, then you can do pretty much anything with them: upload them here, make all the derivative works you want, copy them by any means at all (camera, copier, etc.). Indicate the source as a means of helping others to understand why they are public domain. This is Commons requirement so that the images don't get deleted as possible copyright violations. It is not a legal requirement. At most, it is a matter of process and intellectual honesty. I am not a lawyer, but I'm quite comfortable in saying that if they are public domain, there is no chance of being sued over a copyright matter for any use of them, with or without attribution, because no one has standing to sue you. And if they are already published, there is no chance that uploading to Commons would create a new personality rights/privacy issue. Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I understand the explanation, so I'm very sure that the files are in public domain, the sources of some the files are from United States of America; The visit of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to United States in around 1962 or 1963, and some other videos covered by Europeans before Nigerian Independence, here is a link that will help you check public domain in Nigeria Nigerian Public Domain. also, I will proceed with the upload work, but I will start by uploading one Video one picture, when uploaded, I will notify you to take a look.Anass-kokoTalk 10:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
  1. @Anasskoko: Your link for Nigerian public domain doesn't work, but I found Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Nigeria. Yes, if materials were first published in Nigeria before 1971 we should be good. If that was not the first place of publication, though, we probably aren't. I'm guessing the photos of "the visit of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to United States in around 1962 or 1963" would not have been first published in Nigeria, unless they were from a Nigerian photographer who accompanied him and published back home (or a U.S. government employee photographing as part of their job, in which case they'd be PD for a completely different reason). Also: "videos covered by Europeans before Nigerian Independence" would typically have been published in their home country, not in Nigeria, no? Unless it was a European making newsreels for some predecessor of Nollywood that I've never heard of (and would have a hard time imagining existed, if only because there was such a thing I'm enough of a film buff that I'd know; pretty sure India and Hong Kong were the only pre-Independence British colonies where there was such a thing as a local film industry). - Jmabel ! talk 13:13, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
  2. But, wow, if there is locally published Nigerian film material from before independence, yes we would want that. The very fact that I've never seen such a thing says how badly we would want it. Keep me posted, because I bet a lot of people I know who care about film history would really want to see this. - Jmabel ! talk 13:18, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: alright then! I will proceed right away, I will keep you posted.

SVG file with product fade mode

Hello, I just imported a SVG map (here) but the layer responsible for the colors of the relief is not displayed. I think the origin of the error is that the fade mode of the shading layer is Product, but Commons considers it to be Normal mode, which hides subsequent layers. What is strange is that when you click on the image to display it in large size, then everything is perfect !! What solutions? --88.162.122.5 11:27, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Is this picture acceptable to upload?

Hello, I’m looking to upload a picture of Sam McCann (an Illinois state legislator who ran for governor in 2018), as his Wikipedia page lacks a photo. I located this photo at flickr, shared with a CC2.0 license — is it OK to upload it to the commons? The main reason I ask is that it’s under NonCommercial and NoDerivatives terms, which make me think that it’s probably not be acceptable after all. Thank you for your help. —Historical-idealist (talk) 14:36, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Comment Your suspicions are sadly correct; we cannot accept NC & ND images on Commons. You could contact the Flickr photographer and see if he'll relicense it less retrictively. Rodhullandemu (talk) 14:41, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Saya CGI

How could we get an image of Saya? Charles Juvon (talk) 18:25, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

@Charles Juvon: Hi, and welcome. That website appears to be "©Copyright HAKUHODO inc." Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept an image directly from there, and have the image designer or an authorized official license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:40, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks again for answering my questions. Saya would make a great new article, but it doesn't work without imagery. Maybe the company will release something. Charles Juvon (talk) 21:04, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Government agencies on Twitter and their media tweets

Is an image shared by a government agency via Twitter considered public domain? I know that images uploaded onto government websites automatically become public domain, so I was wondering if the rule was the same with verified government Twitter accounts. Sewageboy (talk) 22:32, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

@Sewageboy: I think they are for US Government twitter feeds, this term.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:22, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Of course, with the usual caveat that the image must have been created by the government. Government agencies may share images created by others, and those are not necessarily PD. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:49, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
These statements are specific to the U.S. federal government, but I don't see that assumption stated anywhere, including in the question. The mere fact that something is created by some government somewhere does not imply public domain. For example, works of the UK government certainly are not, nor works of the governments of most U.S. states. - Jmabel ! talk 10:59, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Indeed. Also, images uploaded onto government websites do not automatically become public domain. Third-party content on a US federal government page is still copyrighted and non-free. De728631 (talk) 12:02, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Obseleted Map Data Articles

Hi! I've just converted the almost entirety of New Jersey's state route infobox maps to ones extracted directly from OSM with the External Data feature of Kartographer. When I went to delete the redundant Commons Data:New Jersey Route ?.map pages, the way the pages are setup only allow for GeoJSON content in the page, making inserting deletion tags impossible. Can this all be cleaned up? In future, is there a way I could handle this myself? I need to do the same things for all the New York routes and a few Pennsylvania routes. If this must be done by someone higher up than myself, all the pages of format Data:New Jersey Route ?.map can be deleted except for NJ 158.BMACS1002 (talk) 23:37, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

  • @BMACS1002: Normally we don't delete superseded files here. Can you explain why exactly you want these deleted? - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
    • The way I see it, it seems ridiculous to have the same set of data in two different places unnecessarily. If it's not usual to supersede files then I understand. If it changes any minds, I was the one who made all the files on Commons in the first place, before I learned about the external data from OSM. BMACS1002 (talk) 20:58, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
      • If anyone's still reading this, it has since occurred to me that when I uploaded those pages, I naïvely pulled data directly from Google Maps, a closed source data set, and put in on Wikimedia' servers, in direct violation of copyright law, so not only is this a matter of preference, but also one of legality. Prioritizing OSM's External data would alleviate these issues. BMACS1002 (talk) 22:59, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Inquiries regarding viewing translated SVG image

Hello all. I have recently translated text in a SVG image using svgtranslate tool. May I ask how can I check the translated SVG image on Commons, and how to insert a translated image into ENWP? Thank you. Cypp0847 (talk) 17:29, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

@Cypp0847: You should be able to find a "Render this image in" dropdown under the image on Commons for previewing. For embedding, the default language for the Wiki is automatically used, but you can force a language like [[File:Fire triangle 2.svg|lang=hi]]. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:54, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@BMacZero: I am sorry but I couldn't find the dropdown menu for my translated file (File:Isabella's invasion route (1326).svg), I've added a zh-hk translation some days ago but it didn't show up. Cypp0847 (talk) 03:17, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@Cypp0847: You're right, it's not showing up for that file. I assume there is something about the file that the tool does not understand. You might have to write a bug[4] or find a user who can debug the SVG. – BMacZero (🗩) 03:35, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@BMacZero: I see. Thank you for your help. Cypp0847 (talk) 03:44, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Are you sure we still support zh-hk?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:45, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Not sure, but I've been trying to translate another document to zh, still failed to show up the translated text. Cypp0847 (talk) 07:53, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

How can I efficiently add vector graphics to png-files already uploaded?

Hi there,

last year, I uploaded and created new entries for a set fallacy icons in png format: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/SkepticalScience&ilshowall=1

Recently, we got the suggestion to make the icons also available as vector graphics and I have the complete set as .svg files ready to be uploaded. My hope was to simply go to the relevant png-file and add the svg-file as an additional format but there doesn't seem to be an easy means to do that via simply uploading the file. How can this be done as quickly as possible and without having to go through all the steps required to set up the collection when I first did it for the png-files? I also don't know - nor have the time to learn - the mark-up language used on Wikimedia, so an easy to follow step-by-step set of instructions would be really helpful.

Thanks much for any help you can provide!

Cheers

Hi there. You cannot add vector graphics to an existing PNG file at all because that is different file format. Instead you should upload the same content as a new file in vector graphics format like SVG. Usually this means redrawing the file completely. You might want to ask the Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop for help with this. Once the vector files have been uploaded, you may add a link to the relevant file in the "Information" template of the corresponding PNG image, e.g.

Thanks much for your reply! I just now uploaded and linked all the SVG-files, which we already had available.
Cheers - Baerbel

Google Photos upload via url2commons

I can't get Magnus Manske's url2commons to work for Google Photos. Not sure why it's not working. I'm logged in and have given permission to OAuth. When I simulate the upload, it's fine. When I hit the upload button, it simply says "Error:" without any further hint what's stopping it. Here are the two input windows (the description code looks prettier when you look at it in edit view):

Any hints what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated. Schwede66 22:47, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Michal, would you have time to look into this matter? Schwede66 01:15, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. Never mind. I'll deal with the photos in a different way. Case closed. Schwede66 01:28, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
