WMF plans for 2014-15

Just to make it clear for the beginning, I have no idea what mw:UploadWizard#Goals is talking about. Numbering them for clarity, they are:

engage more users to contribute media

provide a smoother experience for all

add more media content on our sites

fix critical bugs, to make things work better

Plan & discuss improvements

Solve bugs & technical debt

Improve the user experience

Incremental code refactoring

Develop new modal tool for other uses

2, 7 are empty words; 1, 5 are not concrete; 3 is not the UploadWizard's focus; 9 is uncomprehensible. In other words, I'd adore if the Wikimedia Foundation exclusively focused on 4+6 (they're the same thing) and 8. The rest is uncalled for. Some remarks

The description textbox should be substantially bigger to be comfortable and to manifest that the description should be thoroughgoing.
The link "Add location and more information…" and the textbox "Other information" is misleading and causes that some users write the detailed description into this field instead into the description field. Additional informations should be placed outside the Information template but should be placed into the corresponding field of the Information template (permission and right notes to the Permission field, information about campaigns or circumstances of the origin to the Source field, information about the author to the Author field etc. The form needs more drop-down textboxes corresponding to the separate fields of the Information template.
The location box should distinguish properly the camera location from the object location (or even to allow to fill both together). A heading field should be added and recommended to be filled-in.
The coordinates boxes should be attached to the description box and field, its an inherent part of the content description information.
The license tag should be integrated rather to the "permission" field of the {{Information}} template than added outside the template.
The WLM tag and similar tags should be integrated rather to the "source" field of the {{Information}} template.
The date field should be equipped with an radio button or drop-down list to choose what the date really means (date of taken, date of last modification, date of creation, date of the first publication) etc. and the date should be entered with a proper template expressing the meaning of the date ({{Taken on}} etc.]. The form should allow to enter more dates together.
The date copied from EXIF should be presented in {{According to EXIF data}} to allow to take account of possible incorrect setting of the camera.
Language templates of the description should be separated (every template starting at a new line) to keep the source code uncluttered.
The monument ID template from WLM campaigns should be separated at a new line, not attached closely after the description text.
The license tag should be integrated rather to "permission" field of the {{Information}} template.
The WLM tag should be integrated rather to "source" field of the {{Information}} template.

@MarkTraceur: and @GDubuc (WMF): . I would like to point out that many of the suggestions above are a transformations of current practices to UploadWizard UI. I think that long term the goal of the team is that fewer of these practices will require user interaction and thus no UI and controls at all (should be part of the MediaWiki system, instead of wikitext templates). Should I understand it that UploadWizzard is frozen and without any maintenance and improvement now, because something should to replace it, in a hazy future past tens of years, if ever? Link to Upload Wizard Feedback from Special:UploadWizard does not work

(I had to work my way here manually) The link "commons:Upload_Wizard_Feedbak" that is behind the Feedback link on Special:UploadWizard does not work because (at least Firefox) interpretes "commons:" as a protocol scheme (as "http:" or "ftp:") isntead of a relative path--Hagman (talk) 19:01, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

You have to left click the link, not open it a new tab. It works by loading some JavaScript dialog, it's not meant to be a link to this page. --Nemo 21:23, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Isn't possible to define some more meaningful reaction when an user use the right click? An user uses the links naturally in standard ways, he can not suppose what "is not meant". Hi Naturalblue! That's a rather needlessly cryptic error message, but unfortunately it's quite representative of the mess that is the Upload Wizard. I think the message is Wizardese for "There is already a file named Rock of Dunamase.jpg on Commons. Please use a different name!" —LX (talk, contribs) 17:39, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Why can't duplicate filenames be used if the extension is different?

Most of the work I do here is to vectorise raster images/diagrams etc. So it make sense to keep the same filename as the file I'm converting but just change the extension to .svg. Simple and easy you would think? Then why oh why does the UW insist that I use a different filename as one already exists? So now I have to try and think of an alternate name that is as close as possible to the other one so that they can be categorised as pairs. Seems like a lot of extra work for no apparent benefit. So, what's the chance of the UW taking into account differing extensions as a reason not to shout "duplicate, you can't do that". @Fred the Oyster: As far as I know, that's something only the UploadWizard does, so you could try Special:Upload instead. For derivative works of already existing files, the basic upload form might be even better because you can copy&paste most of the stuff from the source file's description page easily. --El Grafo (talk) 15:54, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Not user friendly

I have been trying to upload some images, from my own camera (not scans etc), and the current upload system seems cumbersome. There's something to be said for leaving things much as they are so we don't have to learn how to use the system every time we visit. MacRusgail (talk) 15:57, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Fallo al subir un SVG

Sospecho motivoː en el nombre puse una fecha con separador "/", aunque tampoco vi advertencias de lo contrario... Lo demás parecía normal, pero soy novato con Commons. Tenía 4 categorías, algunas no existentes.

Hi Jordigal! It doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer. We don't host Microsoft Word documents here. There are two main reasons for this:

Microsoft Word files typically consist primarily of text. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. See Commons:Project scope/Summary/es.
Microsoft Word typically uses a non-standard, proprietary legacy file format. Commons only hosts free content in free file formats. See Commons:File types. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:10, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

photo wanted for sarles tavern, rte 100, Millwood NY

I live a couple of miles from where this building is shown on the map requesting images of historic buildings. I have fond memories of having a beer there after work at the IBM Lab across the street from my house.

Unfortunately, this building was torn down sometime after 1976. If you would like more details, I can probably find out the relevant dates from the town, or by knocking on the door of the closest house.

I have an 1867 map of virtually every building from New York to Albany,

Uploading several files failed

I can't upload 7 files at once using upload wizard. Clicking "Next" after Description has no effect - doesn't work, no error message, no progress bar - nothing. This seems to be the same problem that other users reported above. I'll try Commons:Upload and write all the descriptions once more. -- Juergen (talk) 14:07, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

There are some alternative batch uploading tools listed at Commons:Upload tools#Standalone desktop applications, which may work better, but I haven't used them, so I can't vouch for them personally. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:57, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Language of description by EXIF data

It takes now the description out of the EXIF data. That is quite good. But it always takes "english" als language in the drop-off-menu. So I have to change manually of all files the language. Actually I have "german" and not "english" in the preferences. It should preselect the language of the preferences in the drop-off-menu also when it imports the EXIF data description! --Micha (talk) 11:46, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
