Hi, can you check information on this image please? (wrong species) --91.1.1.93 06:45, 20 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Yes, I misidentified the plant in the photo. I have nominated the image for deletion.

Xiphidium coeruleum vs Xiphidium caeruleum edit

Hi David Stang,

many thanks for so many photos. Please use the name Xiphidium caeruleum for the file title and the description. Best regards Hystrix (talk) 21:15, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Hystrix,

I agree that there should only be one way to spell something, and am no expert on how to spell this plant name. But Google has 31,800 pages for "Xiphidium caeruleum" and 33,800 pages for "Xiphidium coeruleum" -- but uses the same images for both lookups, suggesting I'm not the only one confused on the spelling. Many respected sources seem to use the spelling with the o, which turns out to be a synonym of the spelling with the a. (eg., https://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=896413#null and http://www.tropicos.org/Name/14900004?projectid=13)

On what basis do we decide on a spelling?

My google finds only 963 results for xiphidium coeruleum [1] ;-)
On ITIS I read not accepted - orthographic variant (misspelling) an on Tropicos orth. var.; use Xiphidium caeruleum, which is the original spelling; see Maas & Maas, Fl. Neotrop. 61: 30 (1993), for a full explanation of the correct form of the name. Hystrix (talk) 13:36, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Hystrix,

I don't know how I got the earlier page counts from Google. Apologies. I believe I've corrected all the specific epithets to caeruleum. This leaves a few filenames that aren't quite right, but I guess a filename need only be unique, not meaningful. Right?

I think I've all been with the epithet coeruleum and renamed. --Hystrix (talk) 21:17, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, David Stang!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Simply copy the plant name into the category when uploading the image. If the category does not yet exist, put it on or give me notice. Best regards Hystrix (talk) 23:07, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Also, while it is not as problematic on your own talk page as it may be on other pages of discussion, be sure to sign what you post with four tildes (~~~~). Mahir256 (talk) 01:24, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Mahir256. My uploads have come to an end. I've uploaded 34,544 photos that I've taken. I spent some time trying to create multiple categories for a plant photo, such as "Aquifoliaceae", "Ilex", and "Ilex opaca", but could not automate this because the position in which the click needed to be made changed with each category entry.

I assumed that a user's search would be a full-text search, and so did what I could to help the user find this in the description field, as in " Names: Ilex opaca 'Greenleaf' Ait., Greenleaf American Holl Classification: Plantae > Tracheophyta > Spermatopsida > Aquifoliales > Aquifoliaceae > Ilex > Ilex opaca 'Greenleaf'."

If I had added a category field of "Ilex opaca 'Greenleaf'", would this have been much better than what I did? Do you want me to add the species name as the category for these photos? If so, should I use the full botanical name, or genus species hybrid variety notation or just genus species?

Best regards David Stang

Even if you did not ask me, I would like to answer you gladly.
Yes, please type the species name as a category. There are also subcategories for some hybrids and varieties, for example: Category:Maranta leuconeura var. erythroneura. Then, of course, use this.

Some questions about some photos:

The following pictures I probably wrongly classified, according to the picture title. If you agree, I rename the pictures and move them into the right category. Please do not upload the images again.

Hystrix: I invite you to delete images that you find blurred, duplicates, or lower quality versions of other images. And I welcome any changes to my descriptions that you believe will make them more accurate and useful. You clearly know your plants, I trust you for these activities, and I appreciate your attention to this. -- David Stang

I can not just delete your photos. Commons has rules, for example COM:DG and COM:CSD. The deletion requests you'd have to ask. Hystrix (talk) 16:03, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Photos with wrong description / with wrong file name edit

Hi David, for plants not properly described, there are categories such as Category:Unidentified Cordyline or the upper categories like Category:Unidentified Monocots. It is not absolutely necessary to provide a delete request. Regards Hystrix (talk) 21:59, 24 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Hystrix,

I surely don't want to mislead anyone with an incorrect identification. When I visit an Arboretum or Botanical Garden with my camera, I mostly trust the plant labeling, but sometimes two different plants are standing near a sign, and I err, or err when I'm adding the photo to my system. If there are others who review plant photos and can correct my errors, that would make me very happy. I'll take no offense. David Stang

My suggestion would be, David, you suggest both images for speedy deletion. Also in the photo 1zz the characteristics of the plant are hardly recognizable. And also the bird is very blurred. Regards, Hystrix (talk) 17:43, 25 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Picture edit

Hello David and thankyou for taking and uploading all those photos. I've been categorising a few of them and have added some to articles such as en:Cedrela tonduzii and en:Bulnesia arborea. WereSpielChequers (talk) 16:00, 29 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Subcategories edit

Hi David - a lot of plant categories have subcategories for cultivated specimens (e.g. Category:Thuja plicata has the subcategory Category:Thuja plicata (cultivated), and so on); when uploading pics of cultivated plants, it would be useful if you could use these where they exist, please. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 11:53, 30 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, MPF. I've finished uploading my entire private collection -- about 34,000 photos -- and am off to other projects now. I'd be happy to place photos in categories, but with the current input form on this site, that is very difficult to automate, since the location to click to add a category depends on the length of the previous text added. If there were another way to automate this, I'd be happy to do this. David Stang

Some hints and questions edit

Hi David,

it's all a bit complicated, unfortunately.

Hints:

  • please sign your contributions with four tildes ~~~~ or use the button,
  • it is usual to indent answers with a colon and in the case of a further answer, the latter has two double points, and so on; Example and the source text,
  • further up I gave you a wrong indication; if you have questions to me, put them here and add Hystrix.

Questions:

Hystrix: I changed the source reference, and removed my claim that I took the photo. I don't know how this photo got mixed in with the other stuff.~~~~
  • in the further sorting of your files there were again the same problems:
    • species names that are not available in the standard works,
    • photos with wrong description / with wrong file name,
    • very similar duplicates,
    • blurred photos.
  • My suggestion would be to create a new page for all of these questions. All users could discuss it there. Hystrix (talk) 19:17, 3 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Is there some way I can empower you to guide these uploads to a satisfactory state? I'm an old man with many things I still want to do, and not much time left. I absolutely trust the other users here to sort through any errors in my uploads.~~~~
Hi,
for an old man this was a very quick answer.
Yes, the botanists are mostly old men. I am also both. Though there are exceptions.
My suggestions for the site name would be "Uploads from ZipcodeZoo.com for discussion", "Photos by David J. Stan for discussiong" or otherwise.
Then the question would be: Where should the subpage be inserted? On your side, on my or on Category:Unidentified plants or somewhere else?
It should be your decision, I see hardly any advantages or disadvantages. It can also be changed at any time.
And, please, please, sign only with the four tildes, without nowiki. Thx and greatings, Hystrix (talk) 23:38, 3 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
And your uploads were very valuable. As a result, many new categories have already been created, which will certainly be used in various projects. Hystrix (talk) 23:50, 3 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Campanula glomerata Joan Elliot 4zz.jpg edit

Hi, Found File:Campanula glomerata Joan Elliot 4zz.jpg in category Campanula glomerata. Isn't this one an Asteraceae-species (not Campanula)? --Danny S. (talk) 15:18, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, This plant was likely identified by a little sign in the ground in front of it. The plant in the photo is pretty ratty, and because it is so far past blooming, hard to identify from its flower. I think it might be better to delete the photo than spend any time discussing it. Are you certain that it is not C.g. Joan Elliot? --David Stang

Hi Danny S., in the Category:Campanula glomerata, there are several similar images, such as: File:Campanulaceae - Campanula glomerata-4.JPG. Of course I can not determine a plant with a photo. However, I would also suspect an Asteraceae-species.
And David, so the photo does not have to be deleted immediately. Hystrix (talk) 16:45, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

=== edit

Hystrix,

My strategy with photos was generally to take a photo of the sign labeling the plant or animal, then to shoot away. When I got home, I renamed the photos to the name on the sign. Sometimes the signs had synonyms, and sometimes I changed the species name from an older synonym to a new name, without touching the names of the photos. So yes, it is possible that these are synonyms. But it is also possible that I made some sort of mistake. I am sorry that I can't do much better than that. As for animals, I'm looking. - David — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 100.36.224.122 (talk) 16:31, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Please add categories edit

I noticed that you uploadet many pictures of animals and plants without adding a category. In most cases there exists a category with the scientific name of the plant or animal and this one is the category which should be addet first. All other categories are less relevant, so for Acer palmatum add to the description page. Kersti (talk) 18:28, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

====== edit

I would have done this, but could not. I had over 40,000 images I wanted to give to Wikimedia Commons, so had to automate the process. Unfortunately, the category field on the form changes position as the description field is completed, leaving its location on the screen unknown. A better programmer might have addressed this quirk.

I don't think my approach causes any problem: a search on the species name (such as "Cuphea 'David Verity'") finds the image. If a full-text search of the description field were available, then users might be even happier. -- David Stang

Begonia rex ? edit

Hi, are you sure that those files are cultivars of Begonia rex species, and not unidentified hybrids ? The flowers clustered into a bouquet looks very different from usual rex flowers. I have mooved them into Category:Begonia cultivars, moove them back into Category:Begonia Rex Cultorum Group if I am wrong. If not, those files should be renamed without "rex". I can do it if you do not have the permission.

By the way, happy new year  . --Salix (talk) 18:20, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Begonia sofia ? edit

Hi, File:Begonia Sophia 0zz.jpg and File:Begonia Sophia 1zz.jpg are not Begonia species. Cordyline species ? Thanks to correct it. --Salix (talk) 18:34, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Your Musa textilis pictures edit

Hi David,

I am a researcher at CIRAD in France, and specialist of genetic resources of Musa. I have been curating some big collections of Musa in Africa and the Caribbean for years. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I have been checking the numerous files you have uploaded (thanks!), and labeled as Musa textilis. Unfortunately, none of them is indeed Musa textilis. I have been able to name some of them (see below), but the other ones would only need to be removed since they are surely false (not Musa textilis), but identification is not possible with the image provided.

1- Pictures that should be labeled as Musa laterita: File:Musa textilis 30zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 29zz.jpg and File:Musa textilis 27zz.jpg

2- Pictures that should be labeled as Musa ornata: File:Musa textilis 18zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 46zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 46zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 17zz.jpg and File:Musa textilis 19zz.jpg

3- Pictures that should be labeled as Musa balbisiana: File:Musa textilis 0zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 2zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 5zz.jpg, File:Musa textilis 7zz.jpg and File:Musa textilis 1zz.jpg

============== edit

Yes, Christophe. I think anything that is misidentified should either be correctly identified or nominated for deletion. I am not a botanist, and the plant identifications that I provided came from signs that someone in a botanical garden had placed near the plant. Errors happen, but shouldn't be allowed to persist when detected. Thank you for your concern. -- David Stang — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 100.36.224.122 (talk) 12:48, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. You uploaded pictures of Ticodendron incognitum in the category of this tree species. But you also added pictures of a herb with the same title. Kind regards --Poecilotheria36 (talk) 21:36, 18 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

File:Dinomys branickii 0zz.jpg edit

I think this is mis-identified - it doen't look anything like other photos in Category:Dinomys branickii. It looks rather like a ring-tailed "cat" (Bassariscus astutus) - actually a member of the racoon family. (talk) 13:54, 2 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
