Hi, I´m absolutely fascinated about your illustrations. I´d like to use the poincare-image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poincar%C3%A9_sphere.svg) and want to adopt it a little bit. Can you give me the python-code for it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Log(ruene) (talk • contribs) 21:55, 3 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

I am delighted that you wish to use my illustration. This image is in the public domain, so there are absolutely no restrictions on its use, commercial or non-commercial. However, a quick link to the article is appreciated, but not required, as I like to see my work in use by others. Feel free to use this illustration, and any others of mine, for any purpose. If you wish me to do further illustrations, matching or otherwise, please ask here, and I will be happy to undertake it as long as the end product may be uploaded here. Text divider edit

Inductiveload, here (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Decorative_text_divider_-_central_flare.svg) you posted a fine graphic for use as a text divider. I would like to simply paste the picture into a word processing document (e.g., .doc), but when I have tried, only a black rectangle appears. I saved it as a .png file. Should it be some other kind of file, or what do you suppose I could do in order to paste the image into a text document? Thank you, Aperfectcircle (talk) 23:56, 23 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't use MS Word (or even own a copy), so I can't tell you exactly what the "right" way to paste an image is, if Ctrl-V doesn't do it. You can probably save the image to your hard drive and then do something like "File->Import", "Edit->Insert->File" or similar. That's the best I can come up with, sorry. A proposal... edit

Hey there! I saw your icons and nearly photorealistic vectors of electronics components.

I'm working on a little project which may become a wikibook, but even if it doesn't this would still be a valuable contribution to the Wikipedia project and the Commons.

I basically am looking for an expanded pool of electronic parts, basic discrete components, in your style, coloured much like this and this ...

I have a bunch of stuff that I know I'll be needing for the project, but I won't put it out yet because it's a) a bit imposing and b) this will take time, and unless you're in Sydney and thus can partake of delicious baked confections, I won't be able to really compensate you...

This is a challenge, though. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll get a list to you! Your skills are ... seriously the best I've seen on the Commons at doing these fidgety components. I'd be honoured if you'd have a look over my request.

Thanks kindly, → Horst.Burkhardt (talk) 12:58, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sounds interesting. I also want to create a large collection of electornic parts, but there are so many and without a decent roadmap, it's quite despiriting! So I would be happy to help you. Please bear in mind that I have IRL commitments too, so I can't give any concrete promises about deliveries and stuff. However, don't let this prevent you from asking!
I've made a subpage for you to list what you want.
Hope to hear from you soon, Inductiveload (talk) 16:01, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok, subpage markup tidied and a list of stuff that I'm looking for is listed! Thanks very much for considering my proposal! :D

hi i would love to get in contact with you so i can ask you some questions about your art edit

hi so i'm into DIY electronics and i'm trying to make a tutorial. i found your electronic components and i love them do you have any tutorials for making these parts? please let me know can you send me your email address? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Versuviusx (talk • contribs) 15:10, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the diagrams of the electronic components are drawn in SolidEdge (a 3D modelling and technical drawing program). I'm afraid this is commercial software, and I'm not aware of an equivalent free version. The objects are made into technical drawings, printed to PDF and then edited with Inkscape and/or Illustrator.
If you want any specific parts to be made, you can tell me and I'll do them at some point. I'm already helping another Commons user with a similar request. (see this page). You can also freely modify and redistribute any file I have uploaded if you want. Attribution is nice but not required.
I'd prefer to keep discussions on Commons if you don't mind, as it helps me keep it all together. Emails just get confusing and fill up my inbox too quickly. We can always set up a subpage like I did with Horst.
And please sign comments! Otherwise I have to go and hunt around the history for who is talking to me! Thanks!

Hey there Versiviusx, I'm the dude he was talking about who had a similar request. The subpage linked has a lot of content already, and is growing, and I'm currently doing a sort of DIY Electronics Primer in the style of Short Circuits or Funway Into Electronics. I was wondering, would you like access to my work when I start on it, in case you can make use of it? (I won't post to wikibooks until I'm certain i'm getting somewhere.) Question about block diagram edit

Hi, I need to do some block diagrams like those you did here:[1]. Could you please tell me how you did it? (Sorry if didn't place the question correctly, it's first time I'm using this platform) 132.69.234.226 06:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I used Inkscape to draw these diagrams. You can download any of my work and modify it yourself if you want. If it's for a public purpose (e.g. some wiki or commons thing) then I'll be happy to make them for you if you don't feel up to doing it yourself. Star Maps edit

Hey there! I'm an author and English instructor working on a science fiction project. I saw your map of the nearest stars to Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nearby_Stars_(14ly_Radius).svg) and it is very close to something I need for my own non-wiki project.

What I am looking to do is a) map only BRIGHT stars (such as those listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nearest_bright_stars#Stars_within_10_parsecs) and b) expand the map to 10 parsecs. There would be about 50 data points. I looked at Inkscape briefly, and am willing to give it a go myself, but I have never done anything like this before. I'm a words guy, not a formula guy!

I would very much appreciate any help you might be able to give. Many sincere thanks. --Jasontondro (talk) 03:37, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Sorry for the delay, I am away from home at the moment. I'll be happy to do that for you when I get back in a few days. Do you want the scale rings in light-years or parsecs? Cheers Inductiveload (talk) 03:48, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

40xx IC pinouts to 74xx edit

Hi! I really liked your 40xx IC pinouts -- great design -- and I made some small modifications to some to make similar 74xx series IC pinouts for myself. I see you licensed them PD, so I could upload them myself (if I can figure out how all this works), but would you rather have them as your own contributions, because that's really what they are?

--MLiffiton (talk) 02:37, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, they are PD so you can do as you please. However a mention such as "Based on 4001 Pinout.svg by Inductiveload" would be very kind! Thank you for asking, and I'm very happy you found them so useful - they actually took quite some time to make, simple as they are. If you find Commons daunting, here is a template upload information form, which you can upload at the basic upload page without messing around too much. Change it as you see fit:

Do ask me if you want to know anything. Commons is a big place with a lot to get used to, but contributing here always feels to me much nicer than at Wikipedia, and it always feels like I'm making a real change rather than a tiny increment!
Can I also suggest, if you have time, to contribute at the Practical Electronics Wikibook? There is a partial list of 4000 series ICs here, and you could start an equivalent 7400 series page. Of course, only if you want to, but contributers there are rare, and it's a change to make a really nice compendium of information than can be really valuable to electronic experimenters! Again, ask me for any help!

Also, can I ask that you upload with names in the form 7400 Pinout.svg, with a capital P and just changing the number, as this will allow it to play nicely with templates on the Practical Electronics book and maybe in other places. Thanks!

Cheers, − Inductiveload (talk) 04:01, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

something else

Hi, as you can see at CJK Radicals Supplement I made an error, took a wrong name for the category and categorized 26 files to it. After dedecting my mistake I made a "badname" request, and that seems not so easy. Before I start with re-categorizing the 26 files, changing one letter from "3" to "F", I ask you whether you see it a minor action to do that with a bot. Manually it is quick done, in 15 to 20 minutes, no problem; but if it is almost no work to you, I shall leave it on you. -- sarang사랑 09:06, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

dezoomify improvements edit

Hey, see my dezoomify.rb for calculating zoom level and tilegroup instead of brute-forcing: http://gist.github.com/59636

83.250.123.114 17:58, 20 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Enhancing the python-script to not-brute-forcing could be quite helpful. I tried to download some maps from Fotothek - 8 tries out of 11 were unsuccessful with "Image not found in the given tile groups." -- 84.180.150.198 22:06, 19 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I didn't realise ImageProperties.xml was there with the useful information like width, height, etc. A new version of the script is now available. Please try it out and look for the (deliberate ;-) ) bugs! Inductiveload (talk) 01:30, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Though I found no real bug so far I'd beg for one more favor: please make it possible to work with the /url/to/images one found out on his own since there are some sites where your script can't resolve this URL, e.G. here. The tiles are stored thereThanks for your nice work. -- Malenki (talk) 15:25, 27 April 2010 (UTC), being the second IP, tooReply
I already did! You need to set the "-b" (b for base) flag, and you can use the direct image URL. Inductiveload (talk) 00:12, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sry, I oversaw that - thanks for that feature! But trying use it results in:
python2.6 dezoomify_new.py -b http://fotothek.slub-dresden.de/zooms/df/dk/0001000/df_dk_0001708/ -o 524.jpg
The input option '-i' must be given
-- Malenki (talk) 14:38, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, the -i field is needed. The -b just modifies the intent. You need python2.6 dezoomify_new.py -i http://fotothek.slub-dresden.de/zooms/df/dk/0001000/df_dk_0001708 -b -o 524.jpg. There was a different bug in the code for this case, so you'll need to get the latest code for it to work. Also, the URL can't have a slash at the end of it. I tested it on your URL, it works. Please inform me of any other bugs or suggestions. I will write a clearer set of instructions. Cheers, − Inductiveload (talk) 00:40, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot for clarifying and the enhanced description. I tried a lot of combinations but I wouldn't have thought of putting -b after -i $url.
In case you have some spare time you could try to figure out why the script is unsuccessful with this image although all others work. Maybe it is soothing for you to know that the dezoomify-ruby-script doesn't work with that path, too. ;) -- Malenki (talk) 10:02, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It appears to be because image 6-0-35.jpg doesn't exist where it should (TileGroup7). Can you give me the link to the place the Zoomify flash object is so I can check Zoomify if working there? If not, it may be that the structure for this file has been damaged, and the image will not be retrievable. Otherwise, something has been overlooked in the code (you are right that having the ruby script break here to is soothing!). Thanks, Inductiveload (talk) 18:16, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
With zoomify you can watch it here. It seems I stumbled over another object with broken highest zoomlevel here. -- Malenki (talk) 08:04, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, the highest zoom level is broken here. The Zoomify viewer seems to be able to compensate for that by using a low zoom level if needed. The transition happen just below the (17) label on the left-hand side. I will not add this support (ie. a patchwork of multiple zoom levels) to my script just now because it is non-trivial. I may add support of using a smaller zoom levels on command, and I may make it so the script will not choke, but leave a blank space, so you can tesselate holes by hand. Is that acceptable? Inductiveload (talk) 13:31, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's more then I could have wished for ;), thanks a lot again. Interestingly I found some more images with tiles "missing" in the highest zoomlevel - the tiles were stored a Tileset higher than script expected. Best (or worst) example is this. -- Malenki (talk) 20:44, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm struggling to get the following to work. python dezoomify.py -i "http://newton-le-willows.com/zoom/newton-1849" -b -o -d /home/me/mymap.jpg I tried it with the web page URL first http://newton-le-willows.com/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=202&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=54 but that didn't work either. I'm suspecting that the site may check referer value and not deliver the xml file that it should. 94.192.116.91 19:25, 31 August 2010 (UTC) AndrewReply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

A help request for a PD story I've already done conversion & OCR on edit

Hi Inductiveload,

I used any2djvu to convert 20 individual page jpegs of Adjustment Team to djvu. Two pages include illustrations which are also PD. I'm not sure if I should have done the pages individually and if that is the way to do it I don't know if there is some way to avoid having to fill out the copyright info and description 20 seperate times. I actually did the OCR while scanning from the magazine so that isn't broken up to match the individual pages yet. I can write up the copyright search info pretty quickly. Indeed when it isn't vandalised you can see it for the story in the Wikipedia article though I probably should name the stories in the magazine that enabled me to find the correct Copyright Registration Number for the original publication. It's one of about 23 public domain works included in a Copyright Renewal with the date of first publication advanced a year and in some cases such as this story the magazine of first publication is also changed. A jpg of the magazine's table of contents and copyright notice is in Commons and that doesn't have a vandalism problem which I think is because it can't be vandalized anonymously. The copyright info for the artwork by Faragasso is more straight forward as it's simply not renewed and it was unquestionably drawn to illustrate this story so I don't have to try hunting to be sure it wasn't published in some other context earlier than the Copyright Office online catalog would show a renewal for. It's shameful the funds and mandate weren't provided for the Copyright Office Online Catalog to go back to 1923, the post-1960 copyright law revisions are stealing our culture.

When I started looking at the instructions at Wikisource I just got overwhelmed. This was about 5-6 weeks ago and I'm just not finding the time to spend figuring this out so I've let it stay dormant but I think you offered to help back around the beginning of March. I have the .djvu files, the .jpg files, I could probably make a PDF containing them as a single file if that would help though it still wouldn't solve the lack of time to figure out the complicated Wikisource template(s) (and co-ordinating the files in Commons with text in Wikisource if the template(s) don't do that). I've almost no time for Wiki stuff lately. I'd like to do this as a Wiki project but without help I'm going to have to do it somewhere else that isn't such a hassle. I think you said there was someway you could and were willing to handle this if it was too much for me. When I have more free time I plan to work at learning the Wiki process but I don't think I'm going to have that free time for several months and I'd like to get at least one or a few old PD stories done before that. Not sure if I want to do more from this magazine unless I can find reprints somewhere though. The way it is stapled makes scanning very difficult and I don't want to risk further damage from trying to get the pages flat enough to scan or trying to remove the staples so the pages can be laid down nice and flat. Still the stories that haven't been reprinted may be the most important to preserve and I think the artwork and original presentation are historically and culturally important so I'm not certain it isn't worth removing the staples. Especially if I can find some guide on how to do this with minimal chance of damage and a way to reinsert them afterwards. Refrigerator Heaven (talk) 22:08, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Refrigerator Heaven. I'm slightly confused as to what it is you want. Are you saying that you have a set of individual DJVU files, one per page? DJVUs are like PDFs in that you can have multiple pages in a single file. I can collate then for you if you like (you need a script to do it efficiently). If you upload the JPGs or DJVU pages to a third party site like drop.io or megaupload, that will allow me to have a look and see how best to proceed. Generally I would say that everything needs to be DJVU'd, and illustration pages can be uploaded separately as high-quality JPGs (DJVU introduces compression artifacts which are not a problem with text usually, but can ruin the pictures).
I'm not sure what you are saying about the copyright. Is it renewed or not?
As for removing the staples for a good scan, I would say that if you carefully prise the legs up from the inside and gently pull them out from behind the spine, you will be able to replace them easily at the end. And it would be great to have a work like that that doesn't have a lot of extant copies or reprints floating around. That is what Wikisource especially needs to focus on - saving works from the memory hole, so to speak! Inductiveload (talk) 10:42, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Inductiveload. Yes, I made the scans as one page per file JPGs and converted them to one page per file DJVU files using the online converter. I can upload them in both file formats at a third party site for you to look at and decide how best to proceed. After I've done that I'll give you the link(s). I geuss collation is what I want but I had the impression the pages had to be seperate when I scanned so didn't even do the opposing pages as single files. The illustrations are integrated with the text layout.
Copyright is not renewed for either the illustrations or the short story. There are no misleading or confusing copyrights for the artwork. There is a copyright renewal made after Philip K. Dick's death that includes 23 non-existent works "first published" in 1955 which coincidentally have the same titles as 23 works published in 1954 that entered the public domain because they weren't renewed in time plus 10 works actually published in 1955 and the 1955 works are listed as being published in the year and magazine issues of actual first publication. I've researched this very carefully and own about six of the 1954 magazines containing such stories so am able to verify first publication from the magazines and copyright notices as well as the many bibliographies which consistently show these 23 stories as being first published in 1954. If you search the Copyright catalog for Adjustment Team you will find "[War veteran, and other contributions. By Philip K. Dick.]" includes "(In Imaginative tales, Sept. 1955) Adjustment team. Pub. 1955-07-07; B00000542735." My scan is of Adjustment Team from Orbit Science Fiction, Sept-Oct 1954, No.4 (see Adjustment Team [2]; look at history if the Copyright status section has been anonymously blanked as has happened a number of times) which has no copyright renewal.
I'll try removing the staples as you describe, some of the public domain stories may never have been reprinted or the reprints are as rare as the original publications. Refrigerator Heaven (talk) 04:24, 26 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry for the delay. I have uploaded the DJVU at file:The Adjustment Team, 1954.djvu. For future reference, I have recently completed an image -> DJVU converter which runs in Python, which I used to perform this task. You can use this yourself if you want to in future. The script is at Wikisource, here. Best Inductiveload (talk) 01:40, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. This is very much appreciated. I've assumed there were reasons for the delay and wondered if I should ask if you were going to be unable to do this. As you can tell from the date of my reply, I've been delayed by various things myself. Does the copyright info need to be edited to specify the author of the illustrations and that they are in the public domain? I did research them and they are in the public domain regardless of whether the copyright belonged to Faragasso or to Hanro Corp. as works made for hire. I'll check the conversion script and see if I understand how to use it and what, if any, additional software I may need to install. I was so excited to see the files I didn't even check if any of the text has been done. If not, learning that process and working on that will be my first priority as time permits. Thanks again. Zoomify walk-through for non-programmers? edit

I've been reading help manuals and trying to get this running but it's going nowhere for me. Could I ask for a step-b-step, non-programmers guide to using dezoomify? I've installed Python 2.6, PIL, and done a good bit of reading but I can see spending a l-o-n-g time stumbling around before I have any idea what I'm doing. I can't even figure out where to add the URL of the page with the zoomified image. Thanks for any help you're willing to give.

  • Hi! I'm glad you want to use my script. I have written some examples for the Dezoomify script on it's page, I don't know if you saw them. The steps to using dezoomify.py are:
  1. Download and install Python and PIL (you did this already).
  2. Copy-paste the code into a file (dezoomify.py) on your computer
  3. Open the command promt
  4. Navigate to the folder where you saved dezoomify.py (using the "cd" command. If you don't know how to use the command line, you may not understand the next bit about command line parameters: read some online tutorials and stuff)
  5. Enter dezoomify.py -i http://URL.com/zoomify/etc/blah -d -o c:\file.jpg (or the command you want to use - see the script's page for an explanation of these)
  6. Press enter, and wait. If you wrote "-d" as an option, it will tell you how it is doing. When it is done, the file should exist where you asked for it after the -o parameter.
  7. If it breaks and spews some error messages, it may be a bug in my code - please tell me.

Hope this helps. And please sign posts in future using four tildes: ~~~~ Thanks Inductiveload (talk) 00:02, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Inductiveload, this helped a lot, and thanks Bob for asking in the first place. One thing - in the interest of other fellow copy&paste programmers :) - command line with 'python' in it didn't work, it did when I replaced 'python' with 'dezoomify.py'. And one question - is it possible to make it work for flash sites like this one http://www.bl.uk/magnificentmaps/map4.html ? It reports that it found the image directory but then ends with an error message. Anyway thanks again for such an easy to use script! Fatzers (talk) 13:53, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
You may need to look in the page HTML source for a "zoomifypath" field. In this case it is "zoomify_files/framauro_map", so the full base URL (use the "-b" flag) is http://www.bl.uk/magnificentmaps/zoomify_files/framauro_map/. That appears to be working. That was an error in my instructions: I've fixed it now. Note that there are more instructions on the dezoomify script page. Cheers, Inductiveload (talk) 20:45, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Inductiveload, thank you for your kind reply. I tried framauro but I seem to be getting an error at row 5 col 1 (IOError: cannot identify image file), perhaps for the reasons you discussed above? and for my original goal, http://www.bl.uk/magnificentmaps/zoomify_files/the_island_map/ - which is extremely large (20+k in width) - I'm getting MemoryError, maybe my RAM (700Mb total) and free HD space (cca 300 MB) aren't enough? I will reread all the instructions and try again though. Anyway, lots at Christie's and Frick museum art give me more than enough tiles to play with so thank you again :) Fatzers (talk) 23:38, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Bob again,

I've gotten it working (somewhat) with the help of a programmer friend of mine (he showed me the very handy 'Command prompt here' thingy in Explorer) but the site I'm trying to collect images from doesn't have any code like you described. It's here... http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?line=d&style=AD3371 and all I can find in the HTML code is

I'm stumped.

  Thanks for your patience.Bentbobb (talk) 00:09, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've gotten it working on the indicated page. Seems I had to do some digging to find the zoomify pointer. I don't know enough about HTML to know what I did but using the Opera browser and 'examine element' I found the pointer. Thanks again.

Dear Fatzers, Just wondered if you have been successful in dezoomifying the image http://www.bl.uk/magnificentmaps/zoomify_files/the_island_map/ I have been trying but to no avail :( Would be really grateful if you might share the image with me if you have been able to capture it. Thanks in advance. Arechampions (talk) 06:50, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the late answer Arechampions, I'm afraid the MemoryError won't go away, didn't have the opportunity to try it somewhere else with more RAM/HD space, I'll post here if I manage it :)Fatzers (talk) 20:48, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Inductiveload, great script, but I am trying to make it running.
I have got Python 2.6 and PIL. I am doing everything step by step by your points. But when I enter "dezoomify.py -i http://URL.com/zoomify/etc/blah -d -o c:\file.jpg" he tells me that "invalid syntax" and shows the http under. Where can be the problem ?

I'm afraid I can't help you unless you give me a more precise description. What is the command you are using (including URL so I can test) and what exactly does the error message say? Thanks, Inductiveload (talk) 19:44, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, it was my lack of experience with Python. The script is working perfectly :) But I noticed slight decrease of quality comparing to original. It looks like PIL is making a jpeg from jpegs ?
OK. That is quite possible. I will take a look when I have a moment to see if I can bump the PIL JPEG quality. Thanks for the heads up. Inductiveload (talk) 10:35, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
You may not notice that on any poster, but for sure spot it on any map. I noticed there is -e option. I guess I can use it for example to making TIFFs, but I don't know how.
The -e parameter sets what the script looks for, not the output format. I added a "-q" parameter which governs the quality PIL saves with (default is 75 - the PIL default). It is not recommended to exceed 95. Inductiveload (talk) 11:48, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Inductiveload for your kind reply and fast reaction. Now it is working perfect :)
Although, I would have one question more. How should the list.txt look like ? I have simple txt file with urls, but he downloads the only the latest (the lowest) url. And stops.
I am sorry, Inductiveload, but list.txt just doesn't work. It takes only one url from the list and that's everything.
Sorry for the delay, I was wrapping up some studies. I can't reproduce the problem you have: it works for me. The text file should be one URL per line. If it is still broken, please post your input file. I have uploaded a new version of the script with some minor changes, but nothing addressing your problem. Edit: bug may have been fixed sometime in July, and I forgot about it. Inductiveload (talk) 04:13, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you.

Hello ! Though a french native, and in spite of your explanation in french (cession au domaine public de votre fichier “normal distribution”) I am starting from to talk to you, I would highly appreciate you to accept to discuss and answer me in your native language. And the porposal is to tackle about Gauss and Pareto, should you be interested in making sense and links between mathematics and sociology, with the following suggestion (that the Pareto law might be a strong basis to explain some descrepancies about the french secularism “laïcité” and start hence forth new negociations between english and french “cultures” or manners or schools or skills, as you want) and question (could you please help me find the right value of what I call the “5-50” ratio of the Pareto law, where 50 stands for “half-done” and “5” is my hypothesis, so far, about the right value of the expected input to hit this target, and might be either the right value (5.0 ! wow !) or slighly different (dash it all !!). Hello, Inductiveload!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File: Diffraction through Pinhole.svg & Diffraction through Slit.svg edit

Thank you for these two extraordinary SVGs!

Just two little inaccuracies in the files' descriptions:

1.: File: Diffraction through Pinhole.svg: "It is assumed that the hole is just a few times bigger than the wavelength of the wave"
2.: File: Diffraction through Slit.svg: "A digram showing the wavefronts of a planar wave diffracting through a narrow slit. It is assumed that the slit is just a few times bigger than the wavelength of the wave"

very good animation to visualize what I mean: http://www.walter-fendt.de/ph14d/einfachspalt.htm

dezoomify edit

Hi, I'm trying to dezoomify on Windows Vista. I already loaded the Python 2.7 for windows and pil latest version for windows. I copied the dezoomify.py to C:\ also into C:\python27. I'm writing command as : dezoomify.py -i http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320 -b -o c:\output.jpg but it's giving : File "<stdin>", Line 1 dezoomify.py -i http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320 -b -o c:\output.jpg SyntaxError: invalid syntax

i tried a lot combinations with them but no one is worked. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.253.76.226 (talk • contribs) 11:03, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delay, I haven't had time recently to do much bug-fixing. I have tried it myself, using the URL you gave, and the current version of Dezoomify posted. I get an error, but that is because of a problem with the URL (it can't find the directory, this is a separate matter, I will fix it shortly). I am using Python 2.6 on Linux, and it works under 2.7 on XP, so there is probably problem with Vista. I don't have a copy of Vista (and am unlikely to any time soon), so I'm afraid I can't really help here. To Bob, this is the same for you.
You need to run the program from the same directory. For example, if your dezoomify.py script is in C:\ then, you need go to C:\ in your command prompt before you type your command.
I will get on the problem with your URL soon, 88.253.76.226. Inductiveload (talk) 09:12, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just realised the problem. You are both running the command from the Python prompt. You have typed "python" first and entered the python interactive prompt:
>>>dezoomify.py -i http://cdn.maggiesottero.com/zoomify_pics/J141 -d -b -o C:\dz.jpg

This is wrong. You are giving Python a single invalid statement, hence the SyntaxError. You must run the command from the Windows command line. eg:

C:\>dezoomify.py -i http://cdn.maggiesottero.com/zoomify_pics/J141 -d -b -o C:\dz.jpg

This way, you are telling Python to execute this script. Inductiveload (talk) 09:17, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have uploaded a new version of the script that can handle URLs like yours (it has a database query: "/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320") Inductiveload (talk) 10:01, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for it. It is first time started to work in Windows command line. But without " > " in the "C:\>dezoomify.py" the start of the command.

I copied your regular script from it's page but i gave error for my address as below.

C:\Users\'>C:\dezoomify.py -i http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320 -d -b -o c:\output.jpg ERR: Width not found in ImageProperties.xml

This is because you are telling it "http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320" is a base directory (you used the "-b" flag, when it isn't). Also, please sign your posts, so I can see what's going on here. Inductiveload (talk) 04:29, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

   fp = __builtin__.open(fp, "wb")

How can fix it?

Give me the exact command you wrote for this one, looks like you wrote the output filename wrong, and C:\\dz.jpg is an illegal directory path, so it failed. Inductiveload (talk) 04:29, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok. i fixed the address problem too. If i wrote the addresss as C:\dezoomify.py -i http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom_photo/80320 -d -b -o c:\output.jpg it can find the ImageProperties.xml without problem.

Could you help please. Thank you very much.

This looks like an error caused by a missing image tile (the address 404's). The newer version of the script up now should leave that tile out and continue rather than choke and die. However, in this case about 90% of the tiles are missing, as any tilegroup over 0 (i.e. all but the first 256 tiles) are all missing. You can use the new "-z" parameter to specify a zoom level lower, which hopefully has all the tiles. I did not have a problem with, for example:
python dezoomify.py -i http://www.pasabahcemagazalari.com/Store/zoom/zoom.asp?UrunKodu=80320 -d -z 4 -o /tmp/dz1.jpg

Amon Carter edit

Hi, I have several different dezoom scripts, for different sites, but none work on the following site: //www.birdseyeviews.org/zoom.php?city=Honey Grove&year=1891&extra_info= would you have any suggestions? Also, is there any documentation on how to rewrite your script for different types of sites? Any help is greatly appreciated. ThanksBflo2000 (talk) 05:13, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You don't need to rewrite my script - it should work on all dezoomify objects. In your case, you give it this command:
python dezoomify.py -d -i "http://www.birdseyeviews.org/zoom.php?city=Honey Grove&year=1891&extra_info=" -o C:\honey.jpg
The "-i" is the input URL, the "-o" is the output file and the "-d" tells it to inform you about progress. You can see other examples above the script on its page. You need the quotes as the URL has a space in it. Since it works, I have done the first image, it is at File:Honey Grove, Texas (Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, 1891).jpg. Inductiveload (talk) 14:27, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the assist. I didn't understand that you needed the parenthesis... Is there any reason why the script would hang and stop on the above link? I get through various stages and it just stops. I tried in on other link in the same site and with the same result. This is version 2.7 of python. Also, tested on 2 separate systems with the same results. Bflo2000 21:27, 26 March 2011 (UTC) Bflo2000 (talk) 21:55, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid I can't reproduce it—the image download perfectly for me. Could you be a little more specific as to when it hangs? Are you using the exact command written above? Inductiveload (talk) 02:12, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The script stutters and hangs after getting anywhere between 1 - 50 tiles. I have a screenshot but am not sure how I can post it.Bflo2000 (talk) 00:02, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You could just stick it up on http://imageshack.us. Does it hang due to a program fault (indicated by a "traceback" of Python commands) or just stops and waits forever? Without either a screenshot or a copy of that traceback I can't do anything. Inductiveload (talk) 19:35, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Have you ever seen a error message like this: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/695/201105032359.png/ Bflo2000 (talk) 04:05, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • I have no idea what that error is, I couldn't reproduce it and have never seen it before. It could be that the server is rejecting the Python script's access. I have updated the script to spoof the user-agent (so the server thinks the script is a Firefox browser) and the referrer to be google.com
  • The base directory is not correctly derived in this case, so you need to use the following command:
python dezoomify.py -i http://collections.terraamericanart.org/internal/media/zoomifyDispatcher/1993.7 -b -d -o /tmp/a.jpg

Very impressive!Bflo2000 (talk) 03:14, 6 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do you have any idea what type of resource requirements that the dezoomify script places on the server (just curious)?Bflo2000 (talk)

Well the main RAM usage is the image object that is kept in memory. I have no idea what that takes, but you can easily experiment to find out how big an image you can fit into 1GB. As for network bandwidth, a large-ish Zoomified image can have over 1000 tiles, each of which is a separate URL fetch of a 256*256 image (a few kB each, a few megabytes in total). That's the best I can say for now. Inductiveload (talk) 21:54, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Could you please look at this link and tell me if the dezoomify script should be working? I am having issues getting this to work. This seems to work for me. Note that it is the new Sourceforge version that needs Python 3:
python dezoomify.py -b -i http://americanhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/img/media/364_or/ -d -o C:/box.jpg
Cheers, Inductiveload (talk) 22:52, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I installed the new version, and download the code sourceforge and tried the exact link you posted but I am getting an error.

Any thoughts?Bflo2000 (talk) 01:57, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I hope it's okay, if I answer this? Dezoomify is incompatible with your Python version (3.0), the error should disappear after you upgrade to and use the most recent one (3.2). —Quibik (talk) 08:21, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Quibik, I think that is the problem (. Bflo: execute python --version at the command line to check which version your system has for "python". I am running 3.2.2. Inductiveload (talk) 18:15, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think I'm getting closer but I'm still getting a error. I confirmed the version is now 3.2.2, but when I post the confirmd address above I still get a error. I've posted the error code here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9138588/python-error-cmd-code

Any advice is appreciated. ThanksBflo2000 (talk) 05:14, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I can't see what the error is, the code isn't showing properly. Please put the stacktrace up at [3] and give me a link to that. And try without the final slash first:
python dezoomify.py -b -i http://americanhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/img/media/364_or -d -o C:/box.jpg Inductiveload (talk) 18:32, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Have you downloaded and placed "jpegtran.exe" to the same directory where the python script is? "The system cannot find the file specified" when calling a subprocess suggests that it is missing. —Quibik (talk) 22:24, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I added the "jpegtran.exe", but was still getting issues so I did a little research and I saw that jhead.exe was also required for certain applications. Once I added that the script was completing with the address above, so thank you for pointing me in the right direction, but when I would try another;
(such as: python dezoomify.py -b -i http://americanhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/img/media/411_or -d -o C:/box5.jpg) I get a "Tile downloading stopped prematurely" error (see http://pastebin.com/4b9uczZh). I've tested on a couple of different sites and have gotten similar errors. It's odd because it's an indiscriminant error (meaning one link on a site will work but another won't). Any thoughts? RTL NOR gate schematic edit

Thank you for updating   to create a prettier version  .

Alas, the prettier version is not yet correct. According to the discussion at Wikipedia: Talk:Resistor–transistor logic#Simplified schematic, a functioning circuit needs to pull R1 and R2 in opposite directions, to V- and V+. I suspect the annoyance of requiring 3 power rails -- the V+, V-, and GND rails -- is one of the reasons this logic family is no longer popular.

Rather than accept what some random people on the Internet once said, perhaps you could base your drawing off one of the historical references Dicklyon mentioned in that talk page or its associated article -- say, Page 8 of Patent 3349175 "Method for synchronizing cryptographic teleprinter equipment" by Meisingset et al. 1967.

Thank you again. --DavidCary (talk) 22:25, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, that is a stupid mistake caused by over-hasty copy-pasting. I've fixed it, and turned the resistor downwards to make is clearer (presumably I saw the upwards pointing resistor and assumed it was going "up" to the higher voltage). Thanks for telling me. Inductiveload (talk) 04:18, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I added another one of your drawings to Wikipedia: flip-flop and Wikipedia: pass transistor logic. (I think I first noticed that drawing at Wikibooks:Digital Integrated Circuits/Sequential circuits). Thank you again for giving me a clear illustration I can point at, rather than the long-winded text description I used previously at "Wikipedia: Talk:Transistor count#Transistor count for D-gated latch is 8?". --DavidCary (talk) 23:52, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

fix drawing? edit

Hi Inductiveload, Thanks for your contributions.

I think the broken lines which indicate the ragged edge of the viewable surface look too much like machine threads on this image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ISO_and_UTS_Thread_Dimensions.svg

I think the far left and far right sides should have a more random jagged messy edge- not a crisp sawtooth that could be confused with more threads. Or, perhaps just straight vertical walls instead of jagged or sawtooth?

Best regards, Michael Flynn Electricmic (talk)

How about with curved edges? Also, feel free to fiddle with it yourself. Inductiveload (talk) 14:37, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Any advice on dezoomifying this image? edit

Hi, I'm running Win 7 32 bit and trying to get this image:
http://www.nshistoricplaces.ca/maps/index_maps.php?map=hfx1879

I'm stuck. Tried with -b in the second attempt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

C:\Python27>dezoomify.py -i http://www.nshistoricplaces.ca/maps/index_maps.php?map=hfx1879 -d -o c:\o.jpg

ERR: Source directory not found. Ensure the given URL contains a Zoomify object.

C:\Python27>dezoomify.py -i http://www.nshistoricplaces.ca/maps/index_maps.php?map=hfx1879 -d -b -o c:\o.jpg

ERR: Width not found in ImageProperties.xml

Thanks Hfxmike (talk) 19:32, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, this image is glommed together into a big SWF, including all the place markers, etc. Dezoomify can't extract the root folder, as it's gummed up inside the opaque SWF file, not in the HTML source as usual. However by looking at the HTTP requests sent for the images (using Firebug's Net panel), you can get the base folder as: http://www.nshistoricplaces.ca/maps/hfx1879folder/hfx1879
So the command you need is:
dezoomify.py -i http://www.nshistoricplaces.ca/maps/hfx1879folder/hfx1879 -d -b -o c:\o.jpg

Hi there Inductiveload!

I've seen this four view drawing you've created of the Eurofighter Typhoon, and it's impressive!

I was wondering if you could do the same for this aircraft. A variety of photos and line drawing can be found here and here to help you. I would've used these line drawings instead but I believe they're copyrighted. Cheers! --Sherif9282 (talk) 16:39, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Done! File:Helwan H-300.svg. Sorry it took a while, I got distracted halfway through. Most of the fine detail is based on features found in the Commons photographs - only the general shape is from outside sources (as there is no top-down view of this aircraft on Commons), and even that is not copied, as I don't believe the other 3-view accurately shows the shape from the photos (especially in the tailplane area, and the wings are too long). width not found in ImageProperties.xml edit

Hello, I'm using your script to download some pictures from sites about advertising. The script works very well except with this site: http://www.dubailynx.com/

Writing the following code:

C:\Python27>python dezoomify.py -i http://www.dubailynx.com/winners_media/2010/p rint/zooms/00211_1 -b -o c:\prova4.jpg

I get this error: ERR: Width not found in Imageproperties.xml

I checked the file Imageproperties.xml online and in its content there is the variable WIDTH and it's correct.

Can you please help me? Thanks

This happens because there is code on that page that checks you have Javascript and cookies enabled. If you don't have one of them, it will refuse to load the page, and the Python program has neither. Unfortunately, I don't know how to fool the website into thinking these are active, so I'm afraid there's not much I can do at the moment.
If anyone else knows how to fix it, please tell me, or fix it yourselves and update the script! Thanks Inductiveload (talk) 15:17, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

dezoomify Err: Image too large to fit into memory edit

Hi Inductiveload,

Thanks for posting your script. Even though I don't know a thing about programming, I was able to get it working except that I get "ERR: Image too large to fit into memory" when I try to download from http://www.gigamacro.com/two_dollar/two_dollar_front_sm.html. It works fine at zoom level 4 but anything higher and I get the error. I've been trying to figure this out on my own but the learning curve is pretty big.

If you have suggestions or hints, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

This is because the image is very large (8.3 gigapixels) and the RAM on your computer is too small to contain it. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do to help you on this one. The only way to overcome this limit is to use a lower zoom level, upgrade your RAM or rewrite the script to somehow add image blocks in-place on the hard drive without holding the whole thing in memory (not sure if that is possible). Sorry about that, Inductiveload (talk) 12:29, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dezoomify edit

Hello again,

Now I've fixed a faulty script and replaced it with the one you offered on the page, but now after entering c:\dezoomify.py -i url blah -o c:\me\me\blah.jpg I get an error message saying "ERR: specified directory not found. Check the URL." I'm using an auction site. I'm on Windows 7. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you very much!

Mizbelle (talk) 06:15, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

That means the URL you have given does not contain a recognised Zoomify object. I'll need to see the URL to know what that problem is. If you can just paste the whole command you used, that will be good. Inductiveload (talk) 16:45, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Okay, so I changed my system. Checked the source for BOTH pages and I know they're both Zoomify objects (http://www.hampel-auctions.com/en/A84/78010029/onlinecatalog-zoom/ and http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/ZoomImage.aspx?image=/lotfinderimages/d54334/d5433495&IntObjectID=5433495). • OK, that particular error is caused by a typo in a library name, the script is fixed now.
  • The second problem is a space in your URL, which will break it.
  • The third problem is using the -b parameter when you are not giving the base directory.
  • The fourth problem is a non-standard Zoomify instantiation, which doesn't hold the Zoomify path in a recognisable way. :*The solution to this is use the Firebug extension (the "Net" panel) to Firebox to check the HTTP connections coming in to your browser. Then you can easily get the base directory: http://www.hampel-auctions.com/img/auktionen/A84/z/78010029/ Thus the command you need is:
C:\dezoomify.py -i http://www.hampel-auctions.com/img/auktionen/A84/z/78010029/ -d -b -o C:\Users\me\out.jpg
I'm going to update the instructions now, as a lot of people are running into non-standard Zoomify instantiations which can't be parsed normally. Cheers, Inductiveload (talk) 17:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

dezoomify list mode edit

I can't seem to get the list mode working on my windows system. I've taken a quick look at the script as well as put a couple displays in the script. It seems that only the last line in the file of urls is actually returned and when the /ImageProperties.xml is appended to the url it is put after the new line and makes the url invalid. Can you assist in me getting this option to work. Does the script need some tweaking or am I doing someting wrong? Thanks, vhovar Vhovar (talk) 02:29, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dezoomify on the Mac edit

I have been trying to make zoomify work with Beethoven Kreutzer Sonata on my Mac but it seems to be in a different format. Any suggestions? Or does it work for you? Thanks for your help! from Little Beethoven

Hi, this is a Zoomify object, but it seems to be "non-standard" in some way, so the script doesn't pick up on the resource link. If you read the Troubleshooting page, you will see how to determine the base directory for a non-standard Zoomify instantiation. In the case of the link you gave me, the proper command is:
python dezoomify.py -i http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_001 -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile_001.jpg
Edit: Very interesting site. I'm sure these will be a valuable resource for Commons! If you would like me to batch upload the pages one you download them, I own a Commons upload bot, and can do it easily. All you'd have to do is provide me a link to a file sharing site such as MegaUpload holding a zip file of the pages! Cheers, Inductiveload (talk) 18:44, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the help...As this is the first time I have used Terminal I don't really know what I am doing. Maybe I do not have the dezoomify.py file (which I saved to the desktop) in the right place. How should it be saved and where should it go? Thanks so much for your help.. from Little Beethoven
If you are in a terminal, you have to "cd" (change directory) to the directory holding the dezoomify.py script, or give the full path to the script. eg.
cd /home/littlebeethoven/progs/

Inductive, Thanks for the info so far ...I now copied this into the Terminal:
python /Applications/Python/dezoomify.py -i http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_001 -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile_001.jpg
And I got this.

File "/Applications/Python/dezoomify.py", line 3 print('(ERR) Needs PIL to run. What does this all mean? Thanks for your help. from Little Beethoven
Looks like the file has been saved without line breaks, as it has seen the whole program as a single line. Is your text editor set to use "UNIX" or "Windows" line breaks? I think Macs need UNIX style, as Mac OS X is UNIX-like. Inductiveload (talk) 23:38, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I now saved the script with Textmate (and not Word). And now after running the Terminal again I get.
(ERR) Needs PIL to run. You can get PIL at http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/. Exiting.

Wow, are making progress here! Thanks. I just do not know how to install PIL on a MAC? Help! from Little Beethoven

Well, I can point you to the link you have there, and from there to http://effbot.org/downloads/#pil. There is a Mac package there. I don't have a Mac and I am not permitted, legally or technically, to use a virtual-hardware Mac to see how it is done. Blame Steve Jobs. Inductiveload (talk) 00:42, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I found this site before I read your post. http://nyteshade.posterous.com/macos-x-106x-python27-and-pil After installing all those programs and using copy and paste in the Terminal....WOW that seems to work! Great Job with all your help. It is still churning !!! I can not thank you enough!!! from Little Beethoven
Wow!!! That works great! It does take a few minutes to get the jpg but it is high quality! Thank you so much for all your expert help!!!! from Little Beethoven
No problem. I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour on Commons! Please post a link here when you are done so I can have a look-see. And remember to ask me if you want help with batch-uploading. I'm always happy to help with that. Inductiveload (talk) 01:02, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Inductiveload, Thanks so much for your help so far... I have 3 questions maybe you can help me with?

1)What would I add to the script to make it beep (or make a sound) when It finishes?

You could try the following. Again, I can't test Mac stuff, so I'd be grateful to know if that works - I can add it to my code snippet library!
import Carbon.Snd
Carbon.Snd.SysBeep(1)

batch download edit

2) How would I go about using a list of URLs/base directories in a text file in order to batch downloading these files. For instance, the base directories would go from http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_001 to http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_084 . Would it be possible to manually make a list somehow and automatically get all of the 84 pages one after the other? How would I go about this ...(remember I am very new at this and on a MAC...simplicity is best).

Use the list "-l" argument, as described at Help:Zoomable images/dezoomify.py. The list is simply a text file with each URL on a new line.
python /Applications/Python/dezoomify.py -i /tmp/listfile.txt -l -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile.jpg
Inductiveload (talk) 12:48, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a million. Just to know, would this save as 84 individual jpg files with saved names the same as the last three numbers of the URL on the MAC?
Thanks from Little Beethoven

3) Some of the pages do not download they get stuck for instance No21 did not work

python /Applications/Python/dezoomify.py -i http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_021 -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile_021.jpg

and No30 did not work

python /Applications/Python/dezoomify.py -i http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_030 -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile_030.jpg

I got this:

INF: Getting image number (row, col): 16, 17: Index: 553, Tilegroup: 2

And No12 did not work

python /Applications/Python/dezoomify.py -i http://www.juilliardmanuscriptcollection.org/zoomify/BEET_KREU/BEET_KREU_PF_012 -b -d -o /tmp/outputfile_012.jpg

Is there something I did wrong? Or is it something else? Oh by the way I already have the 1st 44 files of this piece (minus those 3 that didn't work) Each page takes about 6 to 10 mins after copying the script to Terminal. Thanks for your help. from Little Beethoven

Some Zoomify ojects have mising files. The code is supposed to be robust against it, but it's breaking. I'll fix it later today. A solution is to download the image at a lower zoom level by one (-z), which halves the resolution. You can also save the image tiles with "-s" and patch the hole with an image editor. Inductiveload (talk) 12:48, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am trying out these new things you recommended. You have been such a great help! I am trying batch downloading now. It seems It saves the files starting from outpufile000.jpg. Is there something To get it to use the same last 3 digits as the URL in the listfile.txt? Thanks so very much for your input. LittleBeethoven (talk) 16:20, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid there is no way to make it save as a custom name without editing the code. I have a new project just starting for a more featureful Dezoomify-type program. Stay tuned! If you would like to add features, Python is a very beginner-friendly language, and probably wouldn't take long to get to a standard where you can tweak the script. This is not a Zoomify installation, it works using a database query. Dezoomify cannot help you here, but I can possibly rustle something up if you have a need. Inductiveload (talk) 21:03, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Again, not a Zoomify installation, but it is a very similar system. Please keep reporting different sites which don't seem to work with dezoomify, as I can incorporate them into an over-arching framework, but that will be a few days at least before anything useful. dezoomify batch script change edit

I am using your batch script and love it! Except one thing which is this: I am on a machine with a total possible ram of 2gig. I use FreeRAM XP Pro set to clear the ram when it gets below a certain number. This works great on slow machines, the ram gets cleared before your script knows there isnt enough and continues 8 times out of 10. On fast machines the script is too fast and starts to process the next url before the memory manager can clear the ram and the script stops. I am wondering if you can insert a 5 second pause between url processes in order for the ram to catch up. Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

It's easy to do yourself. Add "time.sleep(5)" under "for row in range(self.yTiles):" at line 313. Inductiveload (talk) 00:31, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

hi, i'm trying to use your script and it does not work for the page:

http://www.bieszczady.pl/bieszczady/mapa/mapy/przewodnik?catID=241

using url helper i found base url:

http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth/

when i put this into script the result is as below:

http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth//ImageProperties.xml http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth//TileGroup1/6-0-0.jpg http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth//TileGroup1/6-0-0.jpg http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth//TileGroup1/6-0-0.jpg http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif http://www.bieszczady.pl/images/stop.gif .................................. and so on so forth

i must say i'm not a programmer so please help me to resolve this issue... (i successfully downloded images from some pages any way)

Hi there, your first issue is the trailing slash "/" at the end of the base directory. Your second issue is caused by the "referrer" header causing the server to reject the request. Simply type a "#" in front of line 111 of dezoomify.py: 'Referer': 'http://google.com', so it now reads #'Referer': 'http://google.com',
Just to be sure, the command you want is something like
python dezoomify.py -i http://www.bieszczady.pl/mapa/ruth -b -d -o C:\out.jpg

This is not a Zoomify installation, so Dezoomify can't work here. It could be incorporated into the program, but I don't have time right now. Sorry. Inductiveload (talk) 03:43, 13 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
However, keep checking back for a new version which can deal with different kinds of image tilers, including Gallica. I have started writing it, but progress is slow as I am unfortunately busy in real life. If it is urgent, I can grab it for you next week (I'm not able to do much scripting right now since this isn't me normal computer) and upload it. Dezoomify not working for me.. edit

I can't get dezoomify.py to work. Using Win7(32Bit) and Python27. I type the line below at the (Windows command prompt) C:\>

dezoomify.py -i http://www.lib.uwo.ca/files/madgic/london_fip_1888/ViewerImages/London_sheet10_1888.html -d -o c:\output.jpg

and it gives me this

C:\>dezoomify.py -i http://www.lib.uwo.ca/files/madgic/london_fip_1888/ViewerImages/London_sheet10_1888.html -d -o c:\output.jpg
   File "C:\dezoomify.py", Line 216
     print xmlUrl
                ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I tried changing the xmlUrl to something else thinking that the Url could be protected. That also gave me the same syntax error with the different variable/string name. It's been a long time since I did any programing :) Before you ask I changed the both instances of the xmlUrl (generation and call) lines for that. Generation line 2 lines above I think. I can't think of what the problem could be as it's not a protected variable? Thinking back to my old BASIC days. I tried C:\dezoomify.py without anything after to see what would happen and I also tried some of the examples given on the script page and got the same error every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: After correcting the syntax errors in my version of the script. There were a few. Checking into Python scripting you can't print without (parenthesis) around the content of what you want to print. I then updated the online version to remove the syntax errors (hope that was ok?). I'm getting a new error. I've tried a few different things to fix but it persists. So here is my new error. Using the exact same URL as above. I tried three different ways.

First was to add "quotes" around the URL because I had read that spaces/underscore required the quotes around it (didn't work) Then I checked to see if the URL was the true base URL for the image using the Firebug method. It was nearly the same except for the .html on the end was missing so I tried it without the .html in both quoted form and non quoted form. All of these different attempts produced this

ERR: Specific directory not found. Check the URL.
Exception: HTTP Error 404: Not Found

I have a feeling that the URL is to long for the script to handle? That would take me beyond my current code writing ability to fix if that is the case. Also to all those out there I've found that once you get an error you need to close the command prompt window and start again or it will just drop to the next line without executing. Seems it keeps the error no matter what you type next. I'm still chugging though.. It's been fun so far but any help again would be appreciated. Ron Ronson2k3 (talk) 08:16, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello, and thanks for using Dezoomify. Are you sure you are using Python 2.7? You can certainly write "print foo" in Python 2.x (I do it all the time because I'm lazy), it's only in 3.x that you can't because the print statement is removed, leaving only the function. This script will probably not work with Python 3.x, and if it does, there are no guarantees that it won't fail in mysterious and arcane ways. You can check the version by writing "python -V" at the command line.
  • However, using Python 2.7, the script works for me. You have made a mistake in your command. Since you are specifying a base directory, you need the "-b" flag. If you don't have that, the script will look for an indication of the base directory in the HTML, which often fails since there are many ways it can be specified. I intend to expand this method in future, since it's currently a pile of cruft, but there are bigger things afoot with dezoomify, and base directories are easy to find with Firebug. The base directory does indeed not have the .html suffix. The command you really need is:
dezoomify.py -i http://www.lib.uwo.ca/files/madgic/london_fip_1888/ViewerImages/London_sheet10_1888 -b -d -o c:\out.jpg

Dezoomify.py tweaks edit

Hi! I found your dezoomify.py script very useful, so I thought I would perhaps improve it further. Here is a list of the tweaks/improvements I made:

  • Most importantly, I threw out the Python Imaging Library and replaced it with jpegtran. As a result, tile merging is now done outside of python but is 100% lossless (no JPEG recompressing). The resulting JPEGs are also a little bit smaller thanks to jpegtran's -optimize option.
  • The tiles are stored either in a temporary directory in the system's temp folder or a local directory if the -s flag is set.
  • Tile downloading is now done in multiple threads.
  • Option to skip tile downloading and work directly with the stored ones.
  • Added custom filename functionality to the list-based working mode.
  • Updated the code to work with python 3.

The updated source code is available here. The reason I have included a jpegtran executable is because it's actually a custom build – I had to modify and recompile it to fix an issue (non-MCU size blocks on the right/bottom edges of images were not included). The modified source code is also available in the zip (so you don't have to run binaries from some random shady characters like me).

If you like the changes, you could perhaps update the dezoomify.py wiki page to include them. Any thoughts and further improvements are welcome too. Regards, Quibik (talk) 18:44, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wonderful, it sounds great! I will have a look right now. Thank you! Inductiveload (talk) 18:48, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
The Python code works (with a few tweaks) on my Linux machine, but the jpegtran code refuses to work. I have copied your files into the IJG jpeg source tree, and it compiles, but the '-drop' option isn't recognised. However, the version in their distribution of 8c works, but presumably doesn't have the patch you included (have you submitted it to IJG?). Is the patch critical?
  • The main change I made:
      - cmd = ' '.join(['...','..'])
      + cmd = ['...','..']
Passing a list in works better than combining into a big string, because the quotes to delimit filenames were breaking it. Does it still work on Windows machines with the straight list?
  • I also used os.join for the default jpegtrans exec to make it tolerate cross platforming
I'm going to set up https://sourceforge.net/projects/dezoomify/ to administer dezoomify because the wiki system doesn't work well for more than one file, and version control is easier at SF. Inductiveload (talk) 22:31, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
SF page is live and working, feel free to add tickets, patches, etc. Inductiveload (talk) 00:12, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Setting up a SourceForge project was a great idea! If you gave me writing permissions for the repo (I'm "kvib" at SF), I'd gladly commit some (already pending) changes. I'll probably create some tickets to discuss, too, tomorrow.
Jpegtran caused no issues for me on my Linux system. Maybe you are using some previously installed jpegtran executable by accident? The patch is not strictly critical – you would still manage to recover ~99% of the image without it. Unpatched, (width mod 16) columns and (height mod 16) rows of pixels will be missing from the right and bottom side of the image, respectively. I thought about submitting my changes to IJG and probably will, but considering that the "droppatch" is still an experimental feature and not part of the stable release after 11 years, my hopes aren't exactly high.
About the python code, passing a list is certainly a better way to do it, indeed. I only used 'join' as a quick fix to a bug that I did not look into but which you luckily eliminated (2 parameters were passed as one, accidentally). —Quibik (talk) 01:03, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ok, you are now a developer!
I will try again with jpegtran, and if it continues not to work, I can make a ticket to keep the problem at SF. What I did was replace the files jpegtran.c transupp.c transupp.h in the official jpeg-8c code with the jpeg-8c-patch code and compile. The result I get at "drop-time" is the jpegtran instructions spooling by, and not tile placement (the first tile is happily created). Simply swapping out the binary to the official one works. The "new" jpegtran doesn't have "drop" in the instructions.
I am very happy to have you onboard with this program, it looks like you have some great ideas! Inductiveload (talk) 14:26, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I uploaded a patched jpegtran Linux build to SF. You can at least use that, if all else fails. Maybe adding '--disable-shared' to ./configure helps (otherwise the created jpegtran executable is just a bash script that runs the binary located in .libs)? —Quibik (talk) 17:24, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bot problems edit

It seems that your bot is jeopardising categories, as can be seen here. --Foroa (talk) 09:18, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

That edit was made during testing of the code for the NARA upload bot (which is operated by Dominic) by my bot, and the error that caused this effect (bad gallery parsing) was fixed. I hadn't realised it wasn't undone after testing. Thanks for the heads-up! Inductiveload (talk) 23:20, 28 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dezoomifier edit

Hi. I already used a version of the dezoomify programme to download a folio from the British Library on en.wikipedia.org. I was happy to see that your programme made this so easy. However, there is now a growing permanent collection of digitalised images which are viewable in what seems to be a different format (with their own aspx viewer). Is it possible to download directly a high quality version of an image like this [4] using some variant of your programme? Thanks in advance, Mathsci (talk) 15:03, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delay, I totally forgot about replying! I will take a look at incorporating the new protocol into dezoomify - I have very recently started editing the program to allow it to accept plug-in parts for different protocols. Inductiveload (talk) 19:45, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. If you could carry out tests on the BL manuscripts catalogue above, that would be extremely helpful. Cheers, Mathsci (talk) 12:39, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

bot request edit

Hi Inductiveload, may I ask you for a bot run at the English wiktionary? Or will other people do that, I don't know. I would need small edits in 240 articles, rather easy automatic working folllowing a list I will provide. When you answer you may use my talk page, too. -- sarang 사랑 18:46, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't have a bot flag at Wiktionary, and I don't know their system for getting one, or who is an active bot operator there. It would probably be best to go and ask at their central discussion page. Sorry about that. Inductiveload (talk) 19:45, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

addVIAFdata.js edit

Hey, I tried addVIAFdata.js and it works great. I would love for this script to become standard of the part of the system. I will try it for a while, maybe write help page for it (do you have one on WS?). I found 2 minor issues with it:

  • a lot of Creator pages have line " | Authority = <!-- -->" used for easier manual addition. Unfortunately it seems to confuse your code.
  • Majority of the Authority control templates are being added to Categories. Some of them directly and some through a Creator template. So your code should work with those as well. If possible you can limit it to sub-categories of Category:People by name.

Thanks a lot --Jarekt (talk) 03:46, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jarekt! I have made a couple of changes:
  • The script should now replace commented-out Authority parameters in the Creator templates
  • It should work in the Category NS in the same way it works in the mainspace. It doesn't check for membership of Category:People by name yet, but I can add this if you think it needs it.
As for help pages, there isn't one yet, as the script has only recently become broadly useful and the features have only just become stable. Inductiveload (talk) 11:00, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the script. I just wanted to write the same thing that Jarekt wrote: it doesn't work for the Creator templates that have authority control in comments, which is what happens automatically when a Creator template is created in the first place. I think it might be good to add a preview & save button anyway, mostly I have other stuff to change in these templates anyway, and more often than not I have to add another piece of authority data from another VIAF set (e.g. one VIAF number has LCCN and ULAN, another one has the personalized PND, etc.) --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 08:17, 26 April 2012 (UTC) PS re Jarekt: I am reluctant as to the "standard part of the system". Authority control data isn't for everybody... (e. g. for most people, there is more than one entry in VIAF, and it's difficult to discern anyway. Since we got all the "big names" already in our system, this leaves the lesser known artists and the complicated issues, and it should be handled by experienced people).Reply

See above for the template insertion issue (the script was designed for from enWS where the AC template is positioned more like in the main/category spaces). As for preview and save, that's quite difficult to script in (at least, I don't know how to do it, I only know how to send a "save" API call). However, you can use the tool while in edit mode and it will only update the textbox and not save.
Also you can use the "comment" tool at VIAF to alert them to split records - they told me this is the best way to report them for now. They will merge them and redirect one of the VIAF ID numbers to the complete record. PND also tends to have split records, but I don't know how to report it. SELIBR is receptive to these reports. Perhaps we should have a page where we can list split records and just tell VIAF to check by occasionally? Inductiveload (talk) 11:00, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Good idea with using it in edit mode. That's good enough for me. DNB knows about their double and triple PND numbers (some are only about "names", some really authority data for "persons"), and they won't do too much about it. We report a lot of real mistakes at w:de:Wikipedia:PND/F, though. VIAF needs some public tool for merging and splitting datasets (maybe for select power users), I think, or at least possibilities to tag such issues quickly on the site. But that's their problem, which we cannot solve for them. --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 13:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
This sounds like a really nice script. I just wanted to point out that hopefully meta:Wikidata will make Commons- (or Wikipedia-)stored authority controls obsolete, so it may not be worth investing too much time in developing special tools now. --Zolo (talk) 10:29, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ah well, the script is basically complete, so may as well use it! At least I learned something about AJAX and gadgets, even if the script as a whole is obsolete next week! Inductiveload (talk) 11:00, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, if I'm reading the Wikidata pages correctly, wouldn't this tool be just as useful there in future as a gadget to gather centralised data? And presumably, good AC data here can be used as a source to "prime" Wikidata with some info? Looks like a great project, I can't wait to see what happens there! Inductiveload (talk) 18:25, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I suppose the AC data from Commons, de.wp etc. will be moved to Wikidata and I hope we can directly extract data from at least the Library of Congress (that should be Public Domain). Wikidata structure will be a bit different from current Wikis, with semantic forms rather than templates, but I suppose that most of your script can be used there too. --Zolo (talk) 19:13, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

One small thing: the script should not work in categories if a creator template is present (because people should add/change authority data within the template, not additionally). --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 13:36, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Good point, I'll see what I can do. Inductiveload (talk) 18:25, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
It will now complain at you if it finds a "creator" or "institution" template in the Mainspace or Categoryspace, and won't save the page (though if you need to, it will still give you the raw wikitext so you can copy-paste). Inductiveload (talk) 00:53, 4 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Another strange issue. Try adding AC template to Creator:Hatifi some VIAF records are for people and some for works. The script probable should only display "Personal" records or should show which one are "personal" and which of some other type. --Jarekt (talk) 03:14, 1 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm afraid that is a problem with the VIAF data source. The only source with a useable JSONP interface (needed as I can't execute a generic cross-domain AJAX without a PHP proxy or similar due to browser security) is the "AutoSuggestion" search which doesn't seem to distinguish between works and people. Inductiveload (talk) 00:53, 4 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think, this fix causes problems like this, where "<!--" is removed but "-->" is left behind. I think that worked correctly before. --Jarekt (talk) 19:00, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, sorry about that. It should be working now. Inductiveload (talk) 23:05, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please, see discussion at User_talk:Lupo#addVIAFdata --Jarekt (talk) 22:47, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the heads-up. :) Sorry for the delay, I've been abroad and a long way from computers. Inductiveload (talk) 23:05, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Since the German National Library has changed their authority data file (it's now called "GND") all instances of "PND=" in categories about people should now be "TYP=p|GND=". See de:Wikipedia:Normdaten. The numbers themselves haven't changed. --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 13:41, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Andreas, can you explain it in more details at Template talk:Authority control, where others might join in the discussion. I do not fully understand this change yet. Should we replace current PND's with GND's? What shall we do with SWD's and GKD's? How about authority control templates added to Institution templates? etc. But lets discuss it at Template talk:Authority control. --Jarekt (talk) 16:09, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:VIAFDataImporter.js Gadget edit

Congratulation: Your script is now a gadget.

Where to go from here?

Thanks Rillke, I created initial version of Help:Gadget-VIAFDataImporter. Inductiveload please ass and correct if needed. Since Inductiveload can not edit MediaWiki:VIAFDataImporter.js directly, than may be we should keep User:Inductiveload/addVIAFdata.js around so he can correct and test future issues. Than he can alert one of us or add Edit request to synchronize the pages. --Jarekt (talk) 14:29, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I made changes that would need either to be merged back or changed each time before updating. Again a candidate for editinterface. But since this was rejected, I would even support an RfA. The reason why I've split this into a loader and the actual script:
  1. As anon user, 893KB of JavaScript-Code (this value is for the Main Page) are loaded and executed each time changing a page.
  2. Debugging is easier, if the script is not RL-minified.
-- RE rillke questions? 20:37, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I agree with splitting the script - it is far too heavy to be loaded before you wanted it, and minified code is a pain. Thanks for doing that for me. I can probably manage to maintain this script without admin rights - I'll copy both into my userspace, and just modify the import path - I doubt I'll need to change that file anyway. Practical Electronics/Stepper Motors edit

At the top of the article, under section "Bipolar Motors", you talk about "low-to-high transition on the STEP input" which applies to the "Step" input in the schematic. I interpret that an external "clock source" would be required to make this work. It would be great if you could extend the diagram to show a clock source or call it out. Et302 (talk) 20:05, 10 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

For a constant step rate, then a constant clock source would work. However, if you want to vary the stepping frequency, or step once and wait for a new event, then this is simply a digital input, triggering a step on the rising edge. In most cases, a clock implies a basic frequency "standard" within a circuit, often (in the simple cases, but not always) the smallest time step in a digital design, which in turn drives the synchronised operation of the circuit. It is not generally changed by the circuit's operation, whereas this input would change frequency or turn off altogether according to the stepping required. Hope this clarifies it a bit. Inductiveload (talk) 10:54, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

dezoomify 404 error edit

Hello,

I have a problem trying to get dezoomified images that use a temporary filename. Although I use the filename that at the time is valid I still get a 404 error. It seems to initially connect to the provided url but I keep getting 404 errors.

The strange thing is that sometimes (maybe 1 in 200 attempts) it will get the tiles and save the image.

Any ideas what might be wrong??? I have installed Python 3.2.3

If you don't have the gadget talk page on your watch list, there seems to be an issue. If code changes are required to fix it, I am happy if I could help. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 13:18, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

My bad, I haven't been around much recently due to real life things, so I haven't checked my watchlist recently. I explained the problem at the page, and it's basically an issue with VIAF's searching API, which is not really ideal for this purpose. Direct VIAF ID lookup might be possible, but it might be better to consider a toolserver-based search proxy. Cheers, and thanks for bringing this to my attention. Another bot request edit

Hi again, may I ask you for another job? A further category diffusion for several hundreds of files in the Category:Created with Inkscape-hand where the file names end with ..." vapen.svg" would be to change in the file description the text Inkscape-hand to . Because this change recategorizes into a subcategory, the changing job is splitable into smaller portions. sarang사랑 13:48, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Squared Airy Pattern? edit

Hello Inductiveload, you once made the very nice file shown on the right. I was wondering if you would be able and willing to produce a graph which in addition contains the same function squared. The reason for this is that in confocal microscopy and two-photon excitation microscopy, the final intensity distribution is the result of two point spread functions squared which leads to improved resolution (compared to normal fluorescence). In confocal microscopy this is more a theoretical improvement (since you would have to close down the pinhole to do that) but in two-photon it is for real. I am currently working on de:Konfokalmikroskop and I believe a graphical representation of this would help to explain the situation. So, what I have in mind is an overlay of the graph in the current image with itself squared, both having the same maximal intensity. The second curve could be cyan in color, for example. wrong results with VIAF_Importer edit

Inductiveload, User:Hsarrazin brought to my attention that sometimes the gadget displays numbers and names that do not match numbers and names in VIAF.org. Can you look into it? See User_talk:Jarekt#Problem_with_VIAF_Importer or try to add template to Creator:Wal, A.J. van der. Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 05:00, 29 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and Happy New Year :)
I work a lot with VIAF Add Authorities gadget, and after some tests, I can add another point to diagnose the origin of the trouble : it seems that the problem appears only on authors where the "right" VIAF answers contain links to the (test) National Library of the Netherlands - see for example (hence the numerous wrong answers these last days, due to numerous NL creators added)
I don't know if that troubles the VIAF answers, or the way the gadget handles them, but I wish my input can help you solve the pb   - Thanx a lot --Hsarrazin (talk) 23:47, 1 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Here is another one: [[Creator:Ardy Strüwer]. --Jarekt (talk) 14:20, 3 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's probably to do with the dodgy "autosuggest" search I have to use, since it is done client-side and browsers are tight on cross-site security. I'm considering changing to a PHP proxy at the Toolserver, and then we could use the real search. Inductiveload (talk) 11:51, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Can you also check MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-VIAFDataImporter.js. There are several other small issues that require edits, and so far, nobody that knows JS is helping with your script. --Jarekt (talk) 01:28, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The WikiEditor extension is licensed under "GPL v2 or later" (the same license that applies to MediaWiki). Is it also fine to make use of (and modify, distribute, etc.) the icons under that license? Well, I can't remember why they are even licensed like this, as I prefer to release most illustrations as PD. However, I would say since they are rasters they are all PD-font anyway, so do what you like. I can send an email to this effect if you need. Inductiveload (talk) 19:09, 17 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

VIAFDataImporter edit

Hi Inductiveload,

Thanks a lot for this very cool gadget. I tried to add support for SUDOC and ISNI to it, but obviously I missed something. Any chance you could have a look?

Thanks! Jean-Fred (talk)

If I remember correctly from when I wrote that tool, SUDOC was a bit "wierd" and I couldn't get it working properly and so I left it out. I don't remember the specifics, but it was presumably not an easily solved problem at that time. In any case, Wikidata is now probably the best place to collect Authority Control data, and they even have some nice tools to do it at wikidata:WD:Tools. If you really need to do it at Commons, maybe those tools have some hints as to the "right" way to get SUDOC and ISNI data? Sorry I can't be more helpful... Pole zero plots edit

Why do your pole zero plots have poles on the right half of the plane? Doesn't that make the filter output explode?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elliptic_Filter_s-Plane_Response_%288th_Order%29.svg

should look like this:

http://www.maximintegrated.com/images/appnotes/733/733Fig10a.gif

These are plots of the absolute gain. The tranfer function has only left-plane poles for stability, as you say. See en:Chebyshev_filter#The_transfer_function for more on this. Inductiveload (talk) 13:46, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Star Map Help edit

Hello, I'm trying to make an accurate 3D star map and for this I'm using the information on the article List of nearest stars. I'm using this tool: http://fuse.pha.jhu.edu/support/tools/eqtogal.html to convert from equatorial to galactic coordinates however the mapping I'm getting looks different to your Nearby Stars (14ly Radius) illustration in the same article and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. In my mapping 0° longitude points towards the galactic center and from there I graph the angular distance along the galactic equator anticlockwise. With latitude I go towards +90 or -90, above or below the galactic plane. Would you know why I'm getting a different looking result and what tools did you use to make your map Nearby Stars (14ly Radius)? I'd be glad to have a reply. Hi, sorry for the delay, real life is really taking up all my time. I really can't remember how that all works. The code included in that image description converts from RA/Dec and distance to 3D coordinates centred on the Sun and plots them in a volume. The coordinates are RA/Dec only: there is no hint in that image as to galactic coordinates, though by knowing the RA/Dec, you could fairly easily draw an arrow pointing there if you wanted. I no longer have access to Mathmatica, so I'd need to re-write into a different language to make an equivalent. Sorry I can't be more helpful. It is possible there is a horrible mistake in there somewhere and my image is totally wrong! Inductiveload (talk) 10:14, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Spur Gear 12mm, 18t.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Thanks for uploading File:SH Real (1,1).gif.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Drawings of Screw Heads: valid SVG edit

To make the Screw Head-images valid SVG, the only thing you need to do is to remove the following code from the files with a text-editor:

      <inkscape:grid
      type="xygrid"
      id="grid3305"
      visible="true"
      enabled="true" />

And then change the template of course. Regards, Wereldburger758 (talk) 10:10, 24 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request: Female version 'Counts of Holland Arms.svg' edit

Hi, would you be willing to create a female version of the Counts of Holland Arms.svg ? E.g. a Countess of Holland Arms.svg I tried to do this but got stuck at the part where I wanted to add the radiant glass effect found in the original Counts of Holland Arms.svg I'm not experienced enough I guess, and the tutorials I found on the web didn't manage to help me. Still, I uploaded my work Countess of Holland Arms.svg in the hope you might be willing to edit it or create a new version that is up to par with Wikimedia/Wikipedia standards. Request for some guidance : Sphere Digrams for my Physics Paper edit

Hello Inductiveload,

Greetings from South Africa.

Background

I am busy writing a Theoretical Physics paper on Fundamental Space that involves expanding and contracting spheres.

I need to draw sphere diagrams to illustrate my writing.

I'm working in Ubuntu - well experienced with Gimp, but very new to .svg

Your Work

My figures need to be simple enough to remain clear and work well in a black & white .PDF or black & white print format.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spherical_Coordinates_(Colatitude,_Longitude).svg

^ This image of yours is a really good example of what I am trying to achieve.

Request

You did say on your Talk page that you are willing to assist people who ask nicely and politely :-)

If you have a little free time, and would be willing to give me some guidance, please could you email me ?

I'm a quick learner, so I would just appreciate a leg up, and wouldn't be asking you to do work for me.

You can find my email address here: http://fundamentalspace.org/

You can see directly in the follow link and clic over "Siguiente" ("Next"):

If you wish (and I hope yes), you can send me (via fernando.lison@educa.madrid.org) some letters or/and a photo for your "contributor profile" in Animalandia:

http://animalandia.educa.madrid.org/autor.php?nombre=Inductiveload

I want show to my students (and so everybody) that Animalandia is make for "real person", and I can tell them about "generosity", "share" and other similar words that we use very few at this time...

This is my "contributor profile" and others, for example:

http://animalandia.educa.madrid.org/autor.php?nombre=Steve%20Garvie%20%28Rainbirder%29

In the future, I use more of your photos, I sure!

Thank you for the licence and, of course, for your splendid photos!!

Request from EcoRise and the Biomimicry Institute edit

Hi Inductiveload!

I am impressed with the high quality content you create and am writing to request permission to use some of that content. I work for an organization in Austin, Texas, called EcoRise Youth Innovations. We are a non-profit organization with the mission to empower a new generation of leaders to propel their schools and communities toward a more sustainable future. We are partnering with the Biomimicry Institute, whose mission is to empower people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet. Together, we are creating a biomimicry curriculum that will contain Biology, Chemistry, and Physics lessons as well as a design challenge to stimulate high school science students to learn about—and from—their world in a new way. We would like to include your rendition on the NASA Electromagnetic Spectrum in this Biomimicry curriculum.

You can find the image linked here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AEM_Spectrum3-new.jpg. Is this your creation? We are in need of a higher resolution version of the image. We would also like to have a Spanish version of the same graphic. Access to an editable vector file would be very useful, or, if you would like to make the Spanish version for us, we would be happy to help you translate the labels.

At EcoRise (ecorise.org), we work with teachers to create curriculum that supports a fundamental understanding of ecological principles, promotes leadership and innovative thinking, and creates opportunities for students to participate directly in the design and creation of projects that showcase solutions to environmental issues. Experts from the Biomimicry Institute (biomimicry.org) are offering their expertise on the topic of biomimicry to inform this project. The curriculum will be offered in English and Spanish to an international market via the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Learning Lab, which is an online educational platform. We would like to include you work along with a credit to you.

Please let me know what you think of this request as soon as you can. Feel free to email me (laura@ecorise.org) or reply here, with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your time!

Laura

Hello - Dezoomify on Mac (Sierra) edit

Hello,

First off, I really appreciate all your work, I did something of the same (through a photoshop .xtend script and AppleScript) years ago.

Thinking I had to go through all that again, I found your python script (thanks!) but I can't seem to get it up and running in mac, I get an error at 'subproc = subprocess.Popen([self.jpegtran, '--help'], stdout=subprocess.DEVNULL, stderr=subprocess.PIPE)'.

Thanks again, best, THEPROMENADER 19:49, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I managed to get it working... by re-compiling 'jpegtran' from source with the -crop and -drop patches. Do you want it (for your distribution)? THEPROMENADER 07:53, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

City coat of arms edit

Hello, I'm very sorry if i am disturbing you, but I don't know who to ask about that this so I hope you don't mind if I'm asking you for help about thisː

I plan to add the official coat of arms of East Sarajevo, Berkovici and some other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina as you have done it with the coat of arms of Bochum, so I would like to ask you sth. about thisː

Which program are you using to do something like this? Is GIMP good enough?
If I enlarge the picture does the license stay the same?
How much time it takes?

I hope you can help me about this, and sorry for the bad english (I'm actually a native speaker of bosnian and german) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Combi2000 (talk • contribs) 20:57, 19 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

The coat of arms pictures I made like File:Stadtwappen der kreisfreien Stadt Bochum.svg are vector illustrations. Inkscape is the program I used to make it. GIMP only really makes raster image formats like PNG.
The licence is unaffected by the size of the image. Nearly all of my own images are released into the public domain anyway. There is no licence. Other files on Commons may not be the same, but in any case, size is irrelevant.
Time depends on how fast you work with your drawing software, how complex the image is, how much detail you include and whether you re-use elements from other images.
I hope that makes sense. You can ask on Commons:Graphics village pump for general advice and also request images at Commons:Picture_requests. Inductiveload (talk) 13:49, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:UN Treaty Series - vol 1399.pdf edit

Hello. Being registered in 1985 and published in 1994 without copyright notice means PD-UN-doc, not PD-US-no notice-UN reserved for pre-1987 publication. French ordinal numbers may be suffixed e or ème, not eme lacking a grave diacritic. Thus I revised. Feedback requested on November update for Wikisource ebook export project edit

Hello, Inductiveload! The Community Tech team is requesting your feedback on the recently posted November update for the Wikisource ebook export improvement project. Your feedback is very important to us. We want to know what you think of some work we have recently completed to improve the reliability of WS-Export and font support in various languages. Additionally, we want to know what you think of our proposed mockups to improve the download user experience. In that case, please do check out the updates, if you can, and share your feedback on the project talk page. Thank you! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:56, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

IA renames.. edit

Thanks :)

@: In regard to the renames.

The reason for retaining the IA identifier on the scan filename initially was because it was being used as the mechanism to 'harmonize' the categorization on a given scan, with that used for images from the IA flikr stream, which Fae had uploaded previously, and to help avoid duplicate uploads.

If you have an alternate script for doing this by other means though, keep going, as meaningful names help considerably :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:41, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don't have a general purpose script for this. Sadly, the IA metadata is suspicious enough (or the titles are verbose enough) that a full-auto solution is unlikely to very robust. Inductiveload (talk) 13:29, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

image guidelines revisited edit

I am having the same type of problem as png vs. jpg only different formats (although jpeg vs. png is still there) and this time, not invisible to the eye. And more, the user who was managing the transparent png uploads and suggested the svg project has disappeared from the wikiverse.

Needing export for any ebook to always convert to jpeg is a given.

This is about an svg project where the artist has followed all of the good practice guidelines. The 1907 line-drawings will be multi-colored (for colorblind and not say, Tango or somesuch), i10 capable, w3c valid, and last and surly not the least very beautiful svg.

I was just going to slip the svg in, at wikisource -- but at what point does it become a deriivative work? Do wikibooks use the same exporter as source?

Then, even worse, I would like this book more like the 1907 version only with the ability to switch fg and bg. White on black because it is a field guide. Can the fully compliant svg I described be simply manipulated to be the more compliant to astronomers needs that I also would like? Maybe it is a style toggle?

So, in summary:

  1. Can I get away with this at wikisource?
  2. Can I get away with even more at source?
  3. Style toggles? Maybe for words in the book too?
  4. Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop#‎Jpeg to svg project (quite a bit about copyright there)

--RaboKarbakian (talk) 15:52, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not 100% sure exactly what you're asking re. png vs. jpg. PNG is for diagrams, JPG is for photos. JPG compresses harder but looks nasty when there are sharp edges in the image (e.g. a B/W engraving).
As for whether it's allowed to sub in an SVG, I'm not really sure. Take it up at the Scriptorium perhaps?
Most ebook apps have an "inverse/night mode"—for e-ink devices this is done on the screen hardware level. Having a night-mode on Wikisource itself would be pretty challenging without a lot of work on templates to avoid white-on-white.
It's in theory possible to add CSS to EPUBs, but not as the exporter currently stands.
The SVG would have the copyright of the source, plus your contribution (probably PD or CC-BY at your discretion). Inductiveload (talk) 16:06, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I am imagining taking my Fire out with my astronomy buddies. They use red flashlights, for instance. s:en:User_talk:Inductiveload#"ready_to_export" <-- where I tried to discuss jpg vs. png. I use too many words. But on these devises, file size matters.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 17:07, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
The total file size of the epub right now is 1.1MB, that's pretty good for a book with 50 pictures: as they are, they're only about 13kB each. For such an image, JPG won't win you very much without trashing the picture. This is roughly the same as the SVGs when zipped (that one comes in at 17kB). Also not all ereaders can handle all SVG features.
There are apps for android to reduce the screen brightness, iPhones have something built in, or an e-ink device can be used with no frontlight at all and you shine a red torch at it. Inductiveload (talk) 17:29, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
RaboKarbakian I'm not really sure how you expect me to contribute here, there is a lot of stuff here and in the links.
  • Regarding jpg and png for me it's very easy. Jpg is a destroying format and it deteriorates an image each time its opened-saved. Yes it compresses the file more depending on the quality setting but it still destroys the image, more each time it's opened-saved. In todays world of fiber and 4G soon 5G the size is not such a big deal to most people as it was when jpg was set up. So for me, use jpg as little as possible even in photo images.
  • For wikisource or wikibooks I don't have a lot of experience but to me they are wikis as a part of wikimedia just as wikipedia and when you use stuff from commons you just link to it as in all wikipedia articles. The link itself provides all the needed source information. A derivative work is when you add or change something, not just put in another context.
  • I have no experience in ebooks or there readers so be sure to make that work for people out in night using this book I would say we would have to create versions of the images that are working in there environment. You will never be able to control what device some one will use so we will have to make the images work in that environment by them selves. I have zero knowledge of exporting to an ebook so I have no idea what it does, but again, is size really that critical today?
  • You talk about '"opera-glass" (binocular would be better)' both here and at your request but I don't really understand what you mean. I can translate the words but I think you mean something else, can you please explain, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:59, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Goran tek-en The point at wikisource is to "reproduce" PD books, the updating of the images might be not acceptable there, I don't know, it is a line I have never crossed. I did my first batch of images for gutenberg, using my good commons habits, and had to redo them from png to jpg. Their post-processor doesn't even accept png. And, the savings in file size was worth it. You can "cp image.jpg new-name.jpg" without loss. It is the editing and saving or actually, it is when the image is run through libjpeg again in which further loss is accumulated. So, archival copies in png, for sure! but for devices, my kindle has 8G available, for instance. My Fire has more, but I added that, without the additional space, 8G is starting to get really small for books, audio and other 'apps'. So, the discussion about jpg vs png is about how "exporting to mobi or epub" works; meaning the png discussion has moved to the software level.
I discarded all idea of svg reproduction when I saw how much better your images are, but when I made the request, I was thinking of nice smooth svg lines and dots, instead of cleaned up scan fuzzy things. Wikisource is about reproduction, so a style toggle would be really great. But, without a choice, I would take your images as they were designed by you first! for sure. It is not the first time that images following commons guidelines were going to have (albeit minor) problems. Maybe I am the only one there with an ereader. But, being able to toggle from the full color to black only would truly make my astronomer friends much much happier -- light while viewing makes viewing far more difficult, until the eyes can adjust again.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 18:49, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
First things first: check out the night mode on your ereader. If it doesn't have it, consider installing something like Koreader. Inductiveload (talk) 19:20, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Re. bot tasks and EN:WP edit

Hi!

I see you're the one responsible for maintaining the bot which temporarily (ok, that "temporarily" has lasted a bit, but nvm) comments out the vorbis=1 in Lilypond examples on Wikisource (ex. this if you need a reminder).

Now, as you surely know, Lilypond is used elsewhere too. I ask if you think whether it would be feasible for you to get this bot task active on English WP too - there are probably at least a couple hundred pages there too and while I'm working on the ones that happen to be on my watchlist, there's of course plenty more and since its such a simple fix on a relatively limited number (in terms of a bot) of pages I reckon it probably would only need a single run to clear the backlog.

Tell me if its not possible for any reason. (I'm usually active on Wiki but I think pings should work either way). Cheers, RandomCanadian (talk) 02:36, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@RandomCanadian: This was a really simple one-off regex find/replace using Pywikbot:
python pwb.py replace -search:"insource:/vorbis=\"?1\"?/" '[^%]vorbis="1"' "%vorbis=\"1\"%%T257066%" -summary:"Comment out vorbis=1 while T257066 (score extension disabled) is resolved."
I don't have a bot access at enWP, but you're welcome to take this pattern and find a local friendly bot owner at enWP and ask them to add it. Inductiveload (talk) 09:24, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

denoise edit

Denoise this?--RaboKarbakian (talk) 17:40, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@RaboKarbakian: It's not really possible to salvage this image - firstly, much of the informational content has been destroyed by the aggressive retouching (e.g. the top of the head is almost entirely black) and secondly, this should not have been saved as JPG in the first place. It can't be meaningfully denoised without re-extracting from the image (ideally the JP2, but the JPG will do) at the Internet Archive, being more careful when retouching to avoid clipping the highlights and shadows and re-uploading as a PNG (or a very high quality JPG, which is actually larger than a greyscale PNG). See right.
Certainly the top image is bolder on screen, but at the cost of a lot of finer detail in the mid-to-shadow areas of the histogram. Inductiveload (talk) 18:28, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

It does not do subtitles. I tried to find it, to put subtitle pulling in it, but it seems to be deeply integrated with the Art module. Wikidata Infobox was far more comprehensible for me, but everything I understand about wikidata and the wiki it works with, I learned from the Author template at source.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 13:58, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

"Files over 100MB are not formally supported" edit

You added a note that "Files over 100MB are not formally supported" to Commons:Maximum file size. This is contrary to my knowledge and I can't access the reference that you added. Can you share where that information comes from? Matma Rex (talk) 18:18, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Matma Rex: I was referred to the linked message (which is by User:AntiCompositeNumber) today in the Commons Discord (screenshot of the comment I was referred to: https://i.ibb.co/2Y304fr/2021-04-13-192552-753x470-screenshot.png), wile trying to work out why I can no longer upload large files via Pywikibot like I used to be able to. I also was surprised by this, as I had never heard that it is not fully supported until today. I did say that I had seen no reference to this being a lower QoS option on Commons:Maximum file size and the response was to, quote, "Be bold". Inductiveload (talk) 18:28, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I would think that that message ("normal uploads >100 MB … are generally unsupported") only refers to uploads using Special:Upload (which indeed can't be used to upload files larger than that, I don't think that's even a bug, but a known limitation – and this is already noted on Commons:Maximum file size). I have not tested recently, but I would expect Special:UploadWizard and other tools that use chunked uploading to handle them fine. Matma Rex (talk) 21:03, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Matma Rex: my question on Discord was in regards to uploading via the API. So far today, I have had failed uploaded with Pywikibot uploads (413 is unchunked, which is expected, and DBQueryError for chunked), URL uploads via the Internet Archive (503 errors), uploads via the IA-Upload tool (504 timeout errors) and UploadWizard failures. It eventually got one file though on the UploadWizard and one via BigChunkedUpload.js, but it took nearly 4 hours to exhaust all the options I could think of that would allow me to upload in an automated way (and I still don't have a way to do so). Inductiveload (talk) 21:09, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Let me clarify a bit: there are several bugs that impact the uploading of files, especially by URL, with sizes between 100 MiB (the direct upload maximum) and 4 GiB (the maximum supported by the storage system). The causes of these issues have not been fully determined, and it is unlikely that that will occur in the near term. For files above 100 MiB, chunked uploading tends to be more reliable than uploading by URL, but it still doesn't work 100% of the time. In situations where uploading by URL and chunked uploads do not work, server-side uploads can be used. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 02:37, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

a favor? a small project for an inkscape artist? edit

There are so many things wrong with me asking this favor. One, you already uploaded the book "for me" and two, the images have already been made, but the artist was very eh, high-strung about somethings. Three, arguments, which I will never argue with you about Inkscape, at least not this decade (probably). Four, I should make them myself, but I did not install inkscape for my mom, so I don't have it now....

All that, and yet, here I am, asking another thing. *I actually found that some of the projects I picked up for MC were a nice break from the usual thing, so I am relying heavily on this while asking you.

Category:Through a Glass Lightly (1897, Greg)/Chapter dividers would look lovely in svg. I don't know how long it takes to make SVG, but I suspect that this is on the low end of the usual scale. Making them would probably take you less time than it would for me to figure out how to build inkscape here (--prefix and all that, but last I tried to build it, they were in between autotools and meson and what a mess!) And I showed you the mess I made the last time I tried to use it. Should I dig that out for a laugh and some sympathy?

I complied with everything the artist asked, but he would not use the Book template, telling me his feelings were that it was not to be used for images. Do see User_talk:Schlurcher/Archive_3#Inception_date_vs_publication_date for the reason I use that template now.

So, can you make (I think it is 8) small SVG for that wine book? See (*) for what gives me the gall to ask....--RaboKarbakian (talk) 23:57, 21 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I can give it a go (not today, and maybe not all of them for a few days), but my first question is what system are you on that doesn't have Inkscape binary packages or a build recipe of some sort!? Inductiveload (talk) 00:04, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
