Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Well, I have uploaded 20 something pictures of public art in Malmö. As you may know, all pictures of outdoor public art are free to publish according to Swedish law. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Jorchr,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

• In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
• In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.

I september genomför vi fototävlingen Wiki Loves Monuments igen.

I år har vi till den svenska deltävlingen lagt till ytterligare en kategori med objekt du kan fotografera, nämligen arbetslivsmuseum. Vi har även passat på att förtydliga instruktionerna för hur man deltar. För mer information se tävlingens hemsida.

Det finns gott om fina priser och tio av bilderna går vidare till den internationella finalen. Så varför inte delta i år igen!

Hej! Jag har visst råkat skapa en dublett-kategori: Category:Vår frälsares kyrka - Category:Vår Frälsares kyrka. Vilket som vore bättre, med eller utan versal, vet jag inte.

Eftersom jag håller på med rätt omfattande kategoriseringsprojekt på svwp känner jag inte för att sätta mig in i kategorisystemet här, såvida jag inte måste. Har du möjligen lust att bringa ordning i kategorierna på mina uppladdningar? Hej jag arbetar på Malmö stadsbyggnadskontor och söker någon vinterbild från Malmö med aktivitet. Vi har inte så mycket sånt i vår egen bildbank. Hej! Tack för att du lägger ner tid på mina gamla kyrkfoton! Slogs plötsligt av insikten att det ibland inte tycks finnas "vettiga" bilder på vissa kyrkor. Kan inte lova att göra nåt åt det i brådrasket (flertalet tog jag när jag jobbade som paketbud), men du gav mig en tankeställare. Vivo (talk) 08:26, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hej! Tack för dina kommentarer. Jag använder Lightroom på ipad för att justera bilderna. När jag sparar väljer jag maximal upplösning. Ofta blir små bilder 50% större, medan bilder på några Megabyte blir 50% mindre. Ofta gör jag bilderna ljusare, men finns det stora skillnader mellan ljus och skugga minskar jag även kontrasten. Tycker du det är fel? Eller menar du att skärpan försämras? Det försöker jag undvika, men ser att det ibland blir så när jag justerar perspektivet på bilder med mycket skeva linjer. På det angivna exemplet blir den upplevda skärpan på exempelvis urtavlorna och byggnadens konturer sämre, även om det blev en klar förbättring med skuggutjämningen. På det hela taget blir dock bilderna bättre än innan. Vivo (talk) 13:28, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hej! Vill tacka för din hjälp med bildtexten till Skåneledskartan. Tycker i ärlighetens namn att Wikipedia commons är lite svårnavigerat. Förstår inte riktigt din synpunkt : Dock borde kanske kartan flyttas till ett mer beskrivande namn. Det går att göra genom att begära flytt av bilden.

Som vanligt ingår naturreservat och nationalparker i tävlingen – men i år har vi också lagt till biosfärområden och naturminnen! Tävlingen börjar 1 maj, och pågår under hela maj månad. Om du har varit ute i världen och rest kan du även se om resorna sammanfaller med övriga internationella deltävlingar, och i så fall vara med och tävla även där. För någon vecka sedan blev det klart vem som tog hem förstapriset i Wiki Loves Earth 2020 – stort grattis till Brydand100 och hans fotografi av Röttlefallet! Den 1 september inleds 2020 års svenska deltävling av Wiki Loves Monuments, där det skulle vara väldigt roligt om du ville vara med och delta! Målet med Wiki Loves Monuments är att fotografera svenska kulturarvsmonument. De kategorier som ingår är byggnadsminnen, fornminnen, K-märkta fartyg och arbetslivsmuseer – och du är välkommen att bidra med bilder hela september.

Årets WLM-jury har efter hårt kämpande och stor vånda kommit till ett resultat, och på fredag 11 december, 10.00 (SNT), tar vi första steget i tillkännagivandet när vi i en livestream på youtube presenterar de tio bilder som går vidare till internationella finalen. Du, och alla andra, är välkommen att vara med när bilderna presenteras av Eric Luth och Johanna Berg.
Passa även på att boka in 15 januari då pallplatserna kommer att tillkännages under födelsedagsfirande i samband med Wikipedias 20-årsdag. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:23, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Detta var en uppvisning vid Regementets dag där skytten agerade som del i den irreguljära B-styrka som skulle nedkämpas. Jag antar att det var några av regementets soldater som klätt ut sig inför förevisningen. Jorchr (talk) 19:04, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Du får det här meddelandet eftersom du tidigare har bidragit med bilder till den svenska deltävlingen av Wiki Loves Earth. Jag hoppas att du vill vara med i år också! Som vanligt ingår naturreservat och nationalparker i tävlingen – samt förra årets uppdateringar med biosfärområden och naturminnen! Tävlingen börjar 1 maj, och pågår under hela maj månad. Om du har varit ute i världen och rest kan du även se om resorna sammanfaller med övriga internationella deltävlingar, och i så fall vara med och tävla även där. På grund av Covid-19 kan inga gemensamma evenemang anordnas i år heller, så passa på att fotografera naturen i ditt närområde – eller varför inte damma av fotoalbumen och tävla med bilder du har tagit tidigare?

Nytt för i år är att vi utöver bästa foto även belönar fotograferande av tidigare ofotograferade objekt samt bästa bildserie om minst tio fotografier av samma objekt. Tävlingen börjar 1 maj, och pågår under hela maj månad. Om du har varit ute i världen och rest kan du även se om resorna sammanfaller med övriga internationella deltävlingar, och i så fall vara med och tävla även där. Expeditioner, fotosafari eller en helt vanlig promenad? Via en smidig karta som visar ditt närområde hittar du bra ställen att besöka – eller varför inte damma av fotoalbumen och tävla med bilder du har tagit tidigare?
