Hi, you uploaded the image Image:A_single_white_feather_closeup.jpg and it has been supported to become a featured picture. When i tagged it, i noticed, that the license conditions are not clear. Like the source picture, the one you uploaded is marked with the statement "There are no usage restrictions". But when i looked at the "terms of use" at stock.xchng there are several condition (i. e. "Selling and redistribution of these photos (individually, or as a whole) without written permission is prohibited."). I don't know if this is appropriate to the commons. I am sometimes very sad to find pictures/drawing of a species in commons without the scientific name of the species. In some cases it is even worth as it comes from web sites where the scientific name must have been specified.
For exemple Image:Upsul u0.gif has been uploaded without the name of the scientific name of the species. Could you help me find its name on fishbase.org? I am interested in the name, but also in a way to retrieve the information

Hi, sorry for my late response. The easiest way to find the scientific name is to search for the file name with Google (replace spaces by underscores). For instance, a Google search for Upsul_u0.gif learns that Image:Upsul u0.gif is Upeneus sulphureus. Rex 09:59, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content. We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Your account will be renamed

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Rex. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Rex~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
