Now it is getting clearer I spot the dust on the windscreen: but I'm becoming more confident about removing little specs like this for myself, if you don't have the available time. Have a good day. Hello Ubcule ! Since I don't wan't to upload any more picures that contradics any copyright (like the vinyl LP's of Allman Brothers Band, Steppenfolf - For Ladies only etc, and some TV-shots) , I now will ask You before doubtful copyrights. I have in my possetion two German books printed in Berlin 1940 and 1941, they are called "die Wehrmacht 1940" (covering "the war year" 1939-40) and a simular of the following year. These were actually sold in Sweden (untranslated) during the first years of thewar. Question is if f.i. a picture with (only) Hitler and Walther von Brauchitsch looking at some maps can be upoaded. And in this case the German text would be of sourceful use. It simply states "Die Oberste Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht mit dem Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres Gerneralfeldmarschall von Brauchitsch". Or something like "The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (die Wehrmacht) with the Supreme Commander of |the Army/all Armies| Fieldmarshal von Brauchitsch. So my question is, can this picture be uploaded with or without it's German text.(if at all) ? I knew that the pictures you uploaded previously (1970s albums and 1990s TV screenshots) would still be copyrighted, so it was easy for me to provide that advice.

However, I am not so sure about WWII-era photographs, such as the ones you describe. Therefore, I have passed the question on to the Commons Helpdesk. You should check that page to see if someone replies.

Hopefully, someone who is experienced in this area will be able to help you.

I was going to say that you should leave a comment on the original uploader's talk page, as that person appears to be the original photographer. However, I notice that you've done this anyway.

I'd recommend that you wait a month or two and see if you get a response. Alternatively, you could post a comment on a Sam Coupe fan site, and you'd probably get some feedback.

Greetings! To let you know, images you nominated for deletion a long time ago have risen like zombies from the tomb.... see for links.[2]. Your original request is available both in the files [3] and on the talk page of the uploader [4]. I assume that this refers to the discussion Commons:Deletion requests/File:JeanLeBoulchInfoboxItalian.jpg where the infobox was deleted. Thank you for your contribution, but this type of material (i.e. Wikipedia article content rendered in graphic form) isn't really what Commons is intended for. (Generally, rendering text-based web content as graphics is not a good idea).

Perhaps I should have converted it to a text-based infobox before it was deleted, and for that I apologise. Ubcule (talk) 22:36, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

I've had a look, and unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a medical *nor* a generic infobox for people at the Italian Wikipedia; it's stated that they intentionally didn't create a general purpose one- which seems quite strange to me. (See here; " there was no consensus on having always a template for any category of people").

I would create a "doctor" or "medical person" template myself, but I don't speak Italian (without Google Translate!) and I think that would be done better by someone who did. Sorry that I can't add your list as an infobox at present. Ubcule (talk) 17:47, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

There are a huge number of 1900-ish historical events crying out for an illustration, and of course no-one can go back in a time machine and take one. As far as railway history is concerned, it obviously is possible to photograph the remains nowadays, and there are quite a few images of trees overgrowing what might or might not be an old railway line; but they don't provide much illumination.

The other side of the coin is that some penniless bloke purchased a new-fangled camera and tripod and took the photo and sold it to some commercial postcard company in 1899 (or whatever date). The copyright expiry date is different according to whether he retained the copyright and merely licensed the postcard company to use the image, or sold them the rights.

Obviously I could try to find out whether the postcard company kept records of all that -- maybe they didn't bother -- and I could go to their offices if they are still trading and find out when the photographer died on one of the genealogy websites etc etc.

I tend to rely on the US copyright rule, which seems (it is very badly explained on Wikipedia so I may be wrong) to mean that if it was "published" in the US before 1923 then copyright has expired. That appears to mean that if one postcard was posted from the UK to the US it's ok, and if not, it's not. So I could search every picture postcard website in the US and see if I can find a copy. Of course just because one example *is* in the US it wouldn't prove that it arrived there *before* 1923.

The reality is that

1) I am not going to do that;
2) the Wikipedia page looks fractionally better with the image than without; and
3) the original photographer's estate (i.e. whoever he left title to the copyright to, in his will) of course won't get any money from this: if the copyright *has* expired they aren't entitled to anything, and if it *hasn't* expired we can't use it on Wikipedia so they won't get anything.

For those reasons I used the copyright explanation you have noted.

Frankly life is too short. If you feel strongly about this I suggest you report me to the hierarchy for infringing copyright. Maybe you'd let me know what you plan to do.
