Sister page

Perhaps we should create a sister page like this, over at Wikidata, titled Wikidata:Wikidata:Wikimedia Commons. -- Cirt (talk) 13:51, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

This page is very unhelpful

The only thing what happens on Commons is the section Wikidata on Commons with great content of: {{On Wikidata}} allows to link from Commons page to Wikidata item. What is now the actual procedure on Commons??? -- Perhelion 10:59, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

For example some people reverting the remove of interwiki links because there is not such police on Commons. -- Perhelion 12:36, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

I seem to suck at RTFM...

...but I'm having a super hard time to find documentation and examples for getting the data out of Wikidata. How to you query stuff? This needs to be documented, or to be waaay more discoverable. --Dschwen (talk) 11:35, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately I am afraid that proper documentation (or any) of "getting the data out of Wikidata" is not considered as priority by Wikidata development team. --Jklamo (talk) 11:55, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Translation admin mess

Dear editors, @Oursana, Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), Jheald, and Kaganer: while attempting to mark this page for translation, I encountered the following issues:

Problems with galleries with Wikidata

Don't know whether someone has already experienced this. But linking a gallery in the wikidata entry for a given wikipedia article can mislead a reader. Indeed a gallery is only a small part of the media related to a topic and is indeed a "partial" (point of view's) vision of the user who created it. Wouldn't be better if single articles haven't any link to a Commons gallery at all (in fact I don't even see any use in Commons galleries, being the categories the main item to be considered here)? -- SERGIO ^{(aka the Blackcat)} 15:10, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

I agree that links from Wikipedias and Wikidata to gallery pages on Commons should be discouraged or even made impossible, but that may well be a matter for the Wikipedias, not for Commons – see en:Template:Commons. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 01:06, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

They were (and are) endless discussions about that on Wikidata (for example these two RfC), but no consensus at all (conclusion of that large RfC is widely ignored). --Jklamo (talk) 14:06, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

On Wikipedia

Would someone be able to help implement Wikidata in {{On Wikipedia}}? Template_talk:On_Wikipedia#Wikidata It would be nice to have a sister projects template automatically pull the Wikidata... In particular, it would make navigation to the encyclopedia page of your preferred language easier (if you don't see the interlanguage link). czar 14:56, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Category:Wikidata related maintenance

OK, so we have wikidata access now, and with this we have more and more maintenance categories that need work:

• Many types of templates (like creator, institution, authority control, artworks, books, etc.) should have wikidata links. many templates were linked to wikidata by bots, so pages that are left need human attention. Many need creation of pages on Wikidata:
  • Category:Creator templates without Wikidata link
  • Category:Institution templates without Wikidata link
  • Category:Pages using authority control without Wikidata
• Mismatches between linked Commons and Wikidata pages, that need human attention:
  • Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item mismatching P1472: mismatched Creator page name
  • Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item mismatching P373: mismatched Category name
  • Category:Pages with mismatching VIAF identifier: mismatched VIAF identifier

Many of the mismatches result from issues with data on Commons, like duplicate categories for the same person, which were not detectable for years. Help would be appreciated with helping with those and other categories. Be careful as many of those categories do not update properly if the issue was fixed on Wikidata, so fixed pages can linger in the category for a long time, until some edit to the page on Commons. --Jarekt (talk) 17:13, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

I guess you are talking about files in Category:Artworks with Wikidata item. That is remarkable, and it is work of User:Multichill and participants of d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings project. --Jarekt (talk) 12:05, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Just came across User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata which allows users to easily add appropriate Wikidata links to artworks. I wonder if it would make sense to generate such lists with suggestions to motivate users to work on it. This is not as much fun as with playing the Wikidata game but much better than having categories only. Just as an idea. --Arnd (talk) 12:19, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes we should, but we should also encourage users to began to work on tasks related to Commons on Wikidata and tasks related to Wikidata on Commons. Thanks to Wikidata we finally can detect all kind of issues with data on Commons, like duplicate categories we had for years, or outdated of just wrong Authority control identifiers. As different templates like {{Creator}}, {{Artwork}}, {{Book}}, or {{Institution}} will be rewriten to take advantage of Wikidata we will began comparing metadata kept on commons with properties on Wikidata, the way we do right now for {{Authority control}} (see Category:Authority control maintenance), if they are the same data should be removed from Commons. If it is not on wikidata than it should be copied there and removed from commons. However if the two are in conflict than we will need human to look at it and reconcile the differences as the pages in "Mismatches" categories need to be reconciled. We will have much more of such tasks. Also there are many properties on Wikidata that are related to Commons and they all have maintenance tasks. For example Commons category (P373) has many constraints listed at d:Property talk:P373 and the Constraint violations are reported here. --Jarekt (talk) 16:38, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Some background at wikidata:User:Multichill/Connecting paintings and images. A bot runs twice a day to take care of most of the steps on that page: generating User:Multichill/Image suggestions|image suggestions, possible same images and adding missing links here on Commons based on usage on Wikidata. Still quite rough and could use a better interface, but seems to be quite successful. Personally I'm quite happy that Category:Google Art Project paintings with Wikidata item became bigger than Category:Google Art Project paintings without Wikidata item quite some time ago. I'm focusing on importing to Commons the works for the collections that still have the most works without a link to Wikidata. Multichill (talk) 16:55, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Structured data

We have "... it centralizes access and management of structured data, such as interwiki references and statistical information". I'm trying to figure out what is "structured data" here. And here we have definition of a set by explicitly giving its elements ("structured data, such as interwiki references and statistical information"), so "structured data" is 1) interwiki references, 2) statistical information. How do I turn off notifications of connections of categories in my watchlist to Wikidata? I have no interest in this and it is just a nuisance. I have 'Show Wikidata edits in your watchlist' unticked. Dudley Miles (talk) 09:19, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Can we add some examples of sitelinks and statements to the Project page?

Hi - I'm trying to understand how Structured Data bridges Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and am therefore wandering around various info pages to figure it out. I think it would be really helpful for this Project page to include some examples of the types of connections proposed here, Sitelinks and Statements, so you don't have to hunt.
