Latterly, however, the HungarianGovernment has introduced the Magyar tongueas the official language, and made it compulsoryin all the schools and Government offices, sothat the present generation all speak theMagyar in addition to their own tongue. Itwill be seen by this that the Magyars are theruling race in Hungary, and this is not onlyfrom the fact that they are the conquerors ofthe land, but by reason of their intellectualsuperiority, and their numerical strength inproportion to the rest of the population. Itherefore contemplate giving a short descriptionof that portion of Hungary inhabited by them,dealing principally with their manners andcustoms before I present the other nationalitiesto the notice of the reader. I Pozsony^ the Ancient Capital of Hungary, T09 (Theiss), the two largest rivers in the country,where I shall ask the reader to follow me. From Pozsony, the Ancient HungarianCapital, to Budapest. The journey from Vienna to Budapest, alongthe Danube, is most interesting. Pozsony (inGerman Pressburg) is the first important town, ,being the ancient capital of Hungary, wherethe Kings used to be crowned. It was therethat Maria Theresia, when menaced almost bythe whole of Europe, appealed to the HungarianAssembly, and the Magyars pronounced thecelebrated dictum, Moriamurpro rego nostroMaria Thei^esiaJ There is an ancient forthere which is now in ruins, said to have beenerected before the Magyars occupied Hungary.Pozsony had the first printing establishment inHungary, and the first newspaper of thecountry was published there. The town con-tains many objects of interest, not the leastamong them being the Királyhegy (KingsHill). It was here that the Kings of Hungary,after their coronation, too
