please place the picture(s) in a category or a gallery

To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

• Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

Please stop uploading pictures under the wrong licence

They will all be speedily deleted if the license is non-commercial (NC) and/or no derivatives (ND). For a list of usable CC licenses see Commons:Creative_Commons_copyright_tags. Stating a different license than the one on Flickr won't change a thing. Thanks in advance! NielsF 13:56, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

The list I mentioned states all usable tags. There aren't any US-tags because Creative Commons is an American organization, so the generic tag ís the US-tag. So you can choose from {{Cc-by-sa-1.0}}, {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}, {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} (for attribution (by) and share-alike (sa); {{Cc-by-1.0}}, {{Cc-by-2.0}}, {{Cc-by-2.5}} (for attribution only); {{Cc-sa-1.0}} (for share-alike only). Of course the license here must be the same as the license on Flickr. If the license of a picture on Flickr isn't available here, that means the image can't be uploaded here (for example all non-commercial (nc) and no derivatives (nd) licenses). 15:19, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. See Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses:

In particular, the license must meet the following conditions:

• Republication and distribution must be allowed
• Publication of derivative work must be allowed
• Commercial use of the work must be allowed

So, unfortunately I had to delete a lot of your images :-(. I'm not familiar with en.wikipedia's policy, but it might be that they allow non-commercial or non-derivative licenses, although I doubt that, but you'd have to ask someone there. NielsF 15:29, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Your account will be renamed

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called D-Day. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name D-Day~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
