Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Please tag your images
edit
Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. editImage:Bhuvaneshwari1.jpg and Image:Lalita sm.JPG : Add source info about the images. Really speaking the images do not look 60 or 70 years old. (Probably enhanced by computer????) The religious print art of Raja Ravi Varma press and other prints look so different. I was looking to add the fairuse review tag. Before adding; just told it would be better to ask you about source info. I will add the tag if the appropriate source info is not added.--Redtigerxyz 13:53, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

The source should the source from which you got the photo. Clicked it yourself or from website or calender etc.--Redtigerxyz 14:01, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Undated version of ancient, oft-rendered religious imagery - this ist wrong in the cases of these three photos: Bhuvaneshwari, Lalita, Tridevi - pictures are not ancient, but undated. They should be deleted. I own hundreds of the same style, you could find them in every Hindu-household. --Durga 23:11, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comment; however, I believe we are in agreement on this. I do not state that the images themselves are ancient. I state as you note, that they are "undated versions" depicting their dhyanas (the iconography on all of these deva and devi images, as you are undoubtedly aware, are based on ancient dhyana desciptions). I also state that they are "oft-rendered", i.e. often reproduced by various artists in different times and places, which is in agreement with your statement that "you could find them in every Hindu-household." Perhaps my wording is unclear and should be updated? I would certainly welcome your input. Thanks again - DB (Devi bhakta 23:17, 17 October 2007 (UTC))
Image deletion warning | Image:Adiparashakti.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

- To the best of my knowledge, V. V. Sapar is not the author of this work. In fact, there is no indication of the artist on this work. The deletion notice was applied with undue haste in this case; only minutes (5 to be precise) after I uploaded the image, and while I was still editing and customizing the copyright info! Although every physical indication is that this print is quite old, the issue of who the artist may be, and whether he or she has been dead for 70 years is actually irrelevant under Title 52 of the Indian Copyright Act, as cited in the tagging. By the language of the act, these are not "fair use" claims, but rather exemptions from copyright.
- This matter was referred to Advocate N. Shankara Menon, of Cochin, Kerala, who delivered this opinion based on a quarter century of practice including Indian copyright issues. I would argue for removal of the deletion tag as it was premised upon inaccurate and incomplete information. Thank you. - DB (Devi bhakta 21:55, 17 October 2007 (UTC))

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 11:09, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
