First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

more than a year later....

edit

I now know more about Blue tits than I ever thought I would or even knew that I would enjoy the learning about. I am here to tell you one thing. Commons has a template which states that whatever video or sound file it is placed with is "one of the best on the commons". I have personally been responsible for having that template placed on several files that are barely a fraction of "as good" as the videos you have uploaded here.

I have some questions about the technology that was used in getting such videos -- I suspect that I am looking for confirmation more than actually needing questions to be answered.

I am going to apologize for all people who use commons for the sad fact that only a bot has been here and the bot, while informative, probably cannot tell the difference between the typical dump (upload) and the truly great uploads.

I am here at the least doing this one thing that the bot didn't do. Thank you for the great uploads. -- Queeg (talk) 22:55, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Permission of photo usage

edit

Dear Mr. Heron, I am writing to you for your kind permission to use the nice photo of Sturnus vulgaris(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Colourful_starling.jpeg). I want to use it in our student textbook about invasion biology. The URL and your name will appear together with the photo in the textbook.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely, Mingxing

Your file has been nominated for a Media of the Day.

Your contribution to this project has been noticed. A file Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) laying egg.ogv, which was uploaded by you, has been nominated to be displayed on the Main Page of this project as a Media of the Day. You can view this and other nominations at Commons talk:Media of the day. It is always a good idea to let other contributors know when you think your file would look good as a featured media file, provide descriptions in different languages, and perhaps spread the joy by nominating media of other uploaders, that you believe deserve that. ℺ Gone Postal ( )
