Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.POTY vote
editHello. Thank you for your interest in the 2006 Picture of the Year contest. To vote, you must be an established Wiki editor with at least 100 edits registered either on your Commons or on your home wiki account (eg on one of the Wikipedia sites). You don't have 100 edits on your Commons account, but if you do on your home wiki, please add a diff pointing to a statement on your home wiki talk page which confirms your identity. For example: [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3ABryan_Tong_Minh&diff=103243817&oldid=100712171 diff] which appears as diff. You should add this diff on the same line as your vote, at Commons:Picture of the Year/2006/Voting phase 1. Thank you! If you have any questions, you can ask at Commons talk:Picture of the Year/2006.
You have not provided a proper diff, I'm afraid. Please ask if you need help --MichaelMaggs 16:35, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:Abeerh.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

The following is a continuation of the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Abeerh.jpg, with context added and attribution corrected slightly, continued here because of the above and because that discussion was closed by Polarlys at 22:21 on 17 June 2007 (UTC) in this edit. — Jeff G. 13:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- I did not make this template. Nut-meg 06:47, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- You appear to have added all of the text on that page, except the delete tag added by pd_THOR | =/\=. — Jeff G. 20:26, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't appear to have done any such thing. The entire thing was copied from another photo from Iraq, one of Saddam Hussein. I didn't create this template, I don't know how to create a template. I got the copyright information from the photo of Saddam Hussein in his wiki article. Yet for some reason, nobody us crusading to have that one removed. Nut-meg 06:36, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- You appear to have added what looks like a licensing tag (but is not an actual template) via this edit. — Jeff G. 20:26, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- I see now, you copied the wikitext from w:Template:PD-Old regime Iraq, which is present on all of the pre-2003 photos on article w:Saddam Hussein. There are a few problems with your analysis:
- 1. What is OK on English Wikipedia is not necessarily OK on Wikimedia Commons.
- 2. Administrators on Wikimedia Commons are powerless to delete templates and images on English Wikipedia, unless they are also Administrators on English Wikipedia.
- 3. Any discussions of the validity of w:Template:PD-Old regime Iraq belong on whatever project uses it. Currently, that appears to mean only English Wikipedia. One of those discussions is archived at w:Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2007 April 22#Template:PD-Old regime Iraq.
- 4. The use of pre-2003 photos of Saddam Hussein in an English Wikipedia article about him could be covered by fair use, whereas fair use is not allowed here on Wikimedia Commons, not for Abeer H., not for Saddam Hussein, not for anyone. Note the licensing on the photos displayed by صدام حسين (redirected by Saddam Hussein) and Category:Saddam Hussein.

- Delete - the ID is probably copyrighted by the old Iraq, and the scan is probably copyrighted by Reuters. Prove otherwise, and I'll reconsider my opinion. — Jeff G. 20:26, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- The old Iraq no longer exists. The information in the template, which is on other photos in Wikipedia, is the only credible information I have found on the matter. Everything else on this page is "I think" "I am not aware of..." and bla bla bla, as well as absurd accusations towards me. No valid reason for deletion has been given. If you can come up with one that is verifiable and factual (no "(I thinks"), I'll accept it. Nut-meg 06:51, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- w:Wikipedia:Copyrights#Afghanistan, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, San Marino, Yemen says the following verbatim (but wikified for here):
According to Circular 38a of the U.S. Copyright Office, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, San Marino, and possibly Yemen have no copyright relations whatsoever with the U.S. (Eritrea isn't mentioned at all.) Works originating in one of these countries thus are not copyrighted in the United States, regardless of the local copyright laws of these countries (see 17 USC § 104, quoted in the circular).

Regardless, according to Jimbo Wales, Wikipedia contributors should respect the copyright law of these nations as best they can, the same as they do for other countries around the world.[1]
- Note that Jimbo's email was not specific to English Wikipedia. We Wikimedia Commons contributors should respect the copyright law of these nations as best we can, the same as we do for other countries around the world. Part of my reasoning for my vote was respect. The template text you used did not respect the copyright law of the Republic of Iraq when you used it. — Jeff G. 13:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
