Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Codrinb!

Dacia

Thank you very much but my English is not so well and at the moment I am working at First Mithridatic War in Wiki.it, processing many other maps. Perhaps in future. Best regards! :) --Cristiano64 (talk) 09:50, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Getica

The creation of Vasile Parvan is in public domain since 1998. There is no sketcher named in that book so they are probably the drawings of Parvan. If so, it's ok to use them under Template:PD-old-70. --Alex:D (talk) 22:44, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

LATER EDIT: The drawings were made by Dionisie Pecurariu, who died after 1960. However, his drawings does not qualify as artistic photography, neither as encyclopedia, dictionary and corpore. --Alex:D (talk) 23:12, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

FoP

--Alex:D (talk) 13:57, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, m-am gandit la fair use. Mersi de sfat. Incalcite regulile Wikipediei uneori.--Codrin.B (talk) 01:20, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Hallo Codrinb, re:

Fixed it at the following by removing all EXIF data.. .not nice - I am investigating.

Please only use RotateLink to rotate images. ;-) It didn't work here sine the bot refused to process them since they were not rotated and you requested 0°. In general: if you need help with photo editing you can ask at Commons:Graphic_Lab/Photography_workshop.

Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:52, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the help! I would rather keep the EXIF info. It is one or a combination of bugs in WikiMedia/PHP. See here Commons:Help desk/Archive/2011/10#Thumbnail/EXIF issues with uploaded images. Also I reported the bug here.--Codrin.B (talk) 19:05, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah, sure - I also want to keep the EXIF info. I wasn't aware that you are aware of the problem in detail, so I just wanted to see if it is caused by the EXIF data. I have removed my test file version from your file. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 19:30, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

National Museum of the Union

I have moved National Museum of the Union to User:Codrinb/Sandbox. As an empty gallery -- one with no images -- it was very likely to be deleted on sight by one of our colleagues. I know that may seem odd to you, but we see about 100 new galleries every day -- 90% of them are deleted immediately, usually because they have no images.

When you are happy with the way this looks, just copy it to National Museum of the Union and leave User:Codrinb/Sandbox for the next time you want to create something in a private space.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 13:10, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

About 488px-Bulgarian-Wallachian-Empire.jpg

Buna seara,

  • harta este efectiv si vizibil inspirata din alta, precum si din mai multe surse (Vâlsan, Pârvan, Iorga, Giurescu, Constantiniu...), dar, conform regulilor wikipediene, este "suficient de diferita" pentru a fi socotita alta lucrare ;
  • denumirea de "Bulgarian-Wallachian Empire" este o simplificare practica, inspirata din expresia istoriografiei românesti : "Taratul Vlaho-Bulgar" ;
  • denumirea de "Second Bulgarian Empire" preferata de istoriografia bulgareasca (si, dupa aceasta, de cea englezeasca si nemteasca), este deasemenea inadecvata, deoarece presupune ca acea monarhie din sec. XII-XIII era un stat etnic bulgaresc, precum regatul bulgar din sec. XIX-XX, si nu corespunde cu sursele primare din sec XII-XIII ;
  • denumirea corecta ar trebui sa fie "Kingdom of the Bulgarians and the Vlachs", traducere directa din sursele primare bizantine sau papale din sec XII-XIII, care vorbesc despre Asenizi ca "Vassilevs ton Boulgaron kai ton Vlachon", sau ca "Rex Bulgarorum et Blachorum" ;
  • pentru orice stat medieval multietnic exista mai multe istorii alternative, si ele trebuie cu toate sa fie mentionate, fiecare cu sursele ei, conform regulilor wikipediene, chiar daca anumite grupe de contributori incearca sa promoveze un singur POV si sa le socoteasca pe celelalte ca nerelevante ;

Ca exemplu, vedeti File:Paleo-Balkan languages in Eastern Europe between 5th and 1st century BC - Romanian.jpg si File:Paleo-Balkan languages in Eastern Europe between 5th and 1st century BC, according to Duridanov.png. Toate cele bune.--Codrin.B (talk) 22:00, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Am vazut aici ca va descurcati foarte bine in engleza. Deci raspundeti la bulgar in engleza fara frica ;-)--Codrin.B (talk) 22:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I know a bit of Romanian and I googled the rest :) I think the current caption represents both views, as mentioned (I think) by Spiridon Ion Cepleanu. Cheers. --Laveol (talk) 08:28, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Probleme cu GPSul

Salut,

În timpul parsării imaginilor cu monumente am observat că File:Alba_Carolina_Fortress_2011_-_Francisc_De_Paola_Ravelin_Sign-1.jpg are niște coordonate invalide pentru România (114° longitudine E).

Hi Codrinb, Congratz with your nice VIS! I noticed you just handed out two barnstars to the two promoters, (who are also my Commons friends). I think the barnstars are great for appreciating the collaboration we have among others. I think you have given these two out simply because you are happy with the success of the VIS. However, for an outsider, it could be seen as a reward for support, especially when related to the objective you state for handing out the barnstar. I do not think that is the intention from your side to "buy" promotion in any way. I just wanted to bring it to your attention. These two users are certainly tireless contributors and deserves the barn stars one way or another, but perhaps not for supporting a VIS  . Anyway, I hope you will continue your nice work and have a nice weekend. Best wishes from Denmark --Slaunger (talk) 22:40, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Indeed, Slaunger is a very wise friend among us ! Anyway thanks for the barnstar. I do not deserve it because I promoted you (very nice) set, but I accept the kind message. Congratulations for nice work, we all expect new nice pictures from... Dacia ? --Jebulon (talk) 23:05, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Got it! I am still learning about Wikilove ;-) I'll do my best to bring quality pictures on Dacia topic.--Codrin.B (talk) 17:35, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Good! And good luck with the Dacia Project! --Slaunger (talk) 21:22, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Barnstar

Thank you for your attention. I hope you continue to make good pictures and you will often on VI. The rules are not very easy but you have understood the point. You will always find someone to help you. When I got it Chernilevsky George helped me, and I think is the best of us. In some time you will help you as a newcomer and the chain will continue. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 07:42, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

File:Roman Dacia 1.1.svg

You requested the speedy deletion of File:Roman Dacia 1.1.svg as a duplicate. I am unable to do that as the deletion policy only allows for speedy deletions for exact duplicates. If you believe that it should be deleted then it will require a RFD through normal processes.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:16, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

This is the situation. All maps have been created by the User:Andrei nacu (who no longer seems active) on Wikipedia EN, without being aware of the ability to upload over previous versions, thus branching. Once the maps got moved to Commons, he continued solely on the File:Roman province of Dacia (106 - 271 AD).svg version. As for the other versions, File:Roman Dacia 1.1.svg and File:692px-Roman Dacia 1.1.svg.png, have been moved by two other users from WP en without any changes and without knowing of duplications. I checked with User_talk:Antemister and he simply moved the map. The other map was moved by User:Jaime85 who is no longer active and also didn't change the map. The difference in color was introduced on January 14, 2011 by User:Andrei nacu as he resumed work on the map. To summarize, the two maps in question are older and not really changed, but duplicates of older versions. They are redundant and what I want to achieve is to have all articles which use older maps to be pointed to the latest version. What is the best way to do that? Thanks! --Codrin.B (talk) 22:18, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
As an admin you can still do the global replacement (upgrade) using {{universal replace}} by placing that on User:CommonsDelinker/commands without having to delete the file. Note that if this is done the file link that was being replaced gets a tag afterwards and land in Category:Universally replaced by CommonsDelinker . If you think that the file is superfluous, then we just need a normal DR, it just cannot be speedied through {{Duplicate}}.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:26, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the info! I added the two {{universal replace}} requests. I will follow with a DR once they get replaced.--Codrin.B (talk) 18:37, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

re:Muzeul Național al Hărților și Cărții Vechi

Am creat

National museum of maps and rare books, Bucharest

Native name Muzeul Național al Hărților și Cărții Vechi

Coordinates 44° 27′ 25″ N, 26° 05′ 34″ E
Established 2003
Website www.muzeulhartilor.ro

Doua intrebari/probleme:

Daca te uiti la Category:Museums in Romania by city, jumate sunt in engleza, jumate in romana. Eu as prefera engleza, in felul asta toti cei ce contribuie la commons ar gasi mai usor imaginile si categoriile. Oricum, as prefera sa fie totul intr-o singura limba.

re:WLM 2012

Buna.

O sa-i scriu la Nicubuni. Mersi --Codrin.B (talk) 16:45, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

re:Dacoromanica

Exista vreo colaborare intre WikiMedia si Dacoromanica.ro?

Commons:WikiProject Romania

Thanks for the invitiation. I'll put the WikiProject on my watchlist. I haven't been in Romania in over five years and have no immediate prospects of getting back there (but one never knows), so I won't have new photos to contribute, but I'm one of the few native English speakers here with even a moderate amount of Romanian (the other way around is, of course, very common). Feel free to grab me if at some point the native English speaker point of view is needed for an decisions. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Helping with translation or adapting some Romanian content to English would be of great help. I might take you on your offer soon. Best regards. --Codrin.B (talk) 14:15, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Posada

There is only one version. I believe File:Chronicon Pictum P0146 A posadai csata2.JPG is the original picture, however in different books it was retouched to look less scratchy. File:Viennese_Illuminated_Chronicle_Posada.jpg is closer to the original, and File:Battle1330.jpg was photographed under different light conditions and all the greens look blueish. --79.116.214.64 13:22, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. The light conditions for File:Viennese_Illuminated_Chronicle_Posada.jpg and File:Battle1330.jpg can indeed count for the differences in color. However, I don't think there is only one version. The en:Chronica Hungarorum article talks about en:Chronicon Pictum (1358–1370, ed. S. Ladislaus Endlicher 1827), en:Buda Chronicle (1473, with eleven(!) surviving copies out of which one is at en:National Széchényi Library and one at en:Eötvös Loránd University Library; don't know about the other nine!), and also Johannes de Thurocz's Chronica Hungarorum. From so many copies and variants, it is possible then that two of the Battle of Possada images (page 143 and page 146) are from different copies of the en:Buda Chronicle, while the other two images from other editions of it. I counted at least 13 different medieval versions. But I don't exclude modern retouching. In any case, for each image we need to know the source, where is it located, if it was re-touched recently and by whom. All this detail has to be with the picture. BTW, who I am a talking to? ;-) --Codrin.B (talk) 14:00, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to log on:) Well, it will be difficult to establish the actual source of each picture, as they simply say "from the Chronicum Pictum", no more. --Alex:D (talk) 10:15, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

True, but whoever contributes a picture, should try to do his best and mention the source (book, museum etc). It will help make the image legit, searchable etc.--Codrin.B (talk) 18:24, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Codrinb, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add {{User reviewer}} or {{User trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! --Ginés90 (talk) 02:03, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Categoria Museums in Iaşi cred ca nu are toate muzeele si e cam "subtire". De asemenea, Category:Museums in Iași County‎ lipseste. Cam astea ar fi exemple ;-) Multumesc anticipat pentru interest si ajutor.--Codrin.B (talk) 15:36, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Am creat o subcategorie Category:Museums in Iaşi la categoria Category:Buildings in Iaşi. --Argenna (talk) 18:16, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Category:Museums in Iaşi merge sub Category:Museums in Iași County‎. E ok sa fie doar o subcategorie. Toate muzeele din orasul Iaşi trebuie mutate de la [[:Category:Museums in Iași County‎] la Category:Museums in Iaşi. Mai multe despre categorii: Commons:Categories.--Codrin.B (talk) 14:24, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Category:Keltenmuseum Manching - Exhibition "Rome´s unknown border"

Hello, Codrinb ! In february I visited the Exhibition "Rome´s unknown border" in the Celtic and Roman Museum in Manching ( Bavaria ). Subject of this exhibition was the history of Celts, Dacians and Germanic tribes like the Vandals in Hungary and Romania. I took a lot of pictures, which I am uploading right now in the Category:Keltenmuseum Manching - Exhibition "Rome´s unknown border". Even so I am doing my best in categorizing these pictures, support and advise by you or other members of the Dacia-project would be highly appreciated, because I am no real expert in the history of this area. .--Xenophon (talk) 12:25, 6 March 2013 15:46 (UTC)

Oh, wow! Nice exhibition and great pictures! I'll work on "curating" the info, for those that I know. Looking forward for more pictures. Best! --Codrin.B (talk) 03:51, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Roman inscriptions

Hello ! Well, I like epigraphy as you can see in my own imports. To identify inscriptions, I use Epigraphik Datenbank Clauss / Slaby. As you can see there whit this link, you have all the inscriptions identified by Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum for the ancient roman provinces Inscriptiones Asiae, provinciarum Europae Graecarum, Illyrici Latinae, including Romania. If you can read a little bit latin, just a name or something more, you can find the real nomenclature quite easily. I hope it will be usefull for you. You have all the other volumes of CIL if you change the two last numbers of the link. Il you need volume 17 (miliarias of the roman empire), it's http://db.edcs.eu/epigr/epi_einzel_de.php?p_belegstelle=CIL+17. Il you need inscriptions from Africa, it's http://db.edcs.eu/epigr/epi_einzel_de.php?p_belegstelle=CIL+08, etc. Nonopoly (talk) 12:22, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Please answer here, I follow your page. Nonopoly (talk) 12:23, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh, wow! That's an excellent database/tool! I tried to use [1] in the past but the search options are quite limited. Thanks for the link! I will try to add some of the inscriptions to the pics. Very impressive collection of uploaded images! I will upload inscriptions as I find them during my trips through museums. Best! --Codrin.B (talk) 13:20, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Great to hear it's usefull for you. If you need help, you can ask. I will answer if I can. When I can find a nomenclature, I add the file to galleries like Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, Vol III. And specificaly to Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, Vol III, 04000 - 04999 for references of volume III, as I created the other files for volume XII and XIII for the moment. No subject

If you find someone who has time to investigate I've found a nice coincidence:

The artefats are dated in II AD, the research was performed by Zaharia Covacef but i can't find references. http://www.telegrafonline.ro/1158872400/articol/10058/coifuri_si_masti_de_parada_la_muzeul_de_istorie.html The same period with other roman masks: http://www.observatorcultural.ro/MONUMENTE.-Masca-unui-calaret-roman*articleID_2948-articles_details.html

Salut.

Hi Codrinb, there is an ongoing discussion about some of the comments within Commons:Deletion requests/File:Biserica de lemn din Apatiu (2).JPG at the administrative board. While I understand that deletion requests can be upsetting, it is still best to stay calm and avoid ad hominem comments such as this. Could you please consider to strike out this comment? This would help to take the heat out of this discussion. Thanks and regards, AFBorchert (talk) 07:40, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

I am sorry I lost my tempter, but I find a lot of the DRs coming from that user absolutely frivolous and irrational. It is impossible not too. Look at this one. The Dacians from the Trajan's column died a long time ago, and so did Conrad Cichorius. Yet, for him, they could be reasons for copyright. And here he managed to delete the image of a Dacian Draco from a museum, as copyrightable taxidermy. Except this was not a stuffed animal but a symbol, a flag. I can strike out my comment, but someone has to seriously look at this person's activities and motives. Currently he seems to be focused on deleting in mass materials related to Romanian history and culture, stretching and bending rules such as FOP.--Codrin.B (talk) 09:28, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Maps of the history of Romania in the Middle Ages

Why you included into that category a lot of maps which are not show territory of Romania at all? For example, this one or this one? I suggest that you examine category where you included such maps and to remove unrelated maps from it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Maps_of_the_history_of_Romania_in_the_Middle_Ages PANONIAN (talk) 15:48, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, it was in error :-) I am cleaning up what I find. No hostile annexation of territory, for sure ;-) Thanks for bringing it up. --Codrin.B (talk) 20:32, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

ArchiveBot

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Cat-a-lot

Oricum nu lucrez la Category:Locator maps of cities in Romania in mod specific. --Codrin.B (talk) 16:14, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

You're doing political censorship. It is not permissible. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 11:15, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

I am proposing for deletion politically-loaded, propaganda material in unfree content that you stolen from the internet. Is that censorship to you? What you have done in the 1st place is not permissible.--Codrin.B (talk) 09:32, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

I've improved it a bit; I suspect it might be wise to upload a copy to en-wiki with Template:Keep Local on it, though. Trying to decide whether to remove the line, or to just hope for a better copy, as removing those sorts of lines from half-toned images can become interestingly difficult. Stone Mace Head of Decea Muresului Type from Sard

Hello,

My name is Peter Le Couteur, I’m an artist and researcher doing a PhD at the Royal College of Art in London. I’m very interested in the intersection of sculpture, museology, anthropology and narratives; sculpture here meaning primarily a way of thinking about objects.

I’m writing to you with a question about the small stone toroids classed as “mace heads”. I’m not an archeologist, and so had no idea who best to contact about my question. The image you uploaded to Wikimedia of the Decea Muresului Type from Sard is an excellent example of what I'm interested in, so I thought I would write to you.

In the course of my researches, I saw an artefact in the National Museum in Istanbul, which was labelled as a fragment of a “mace head”. I was a bit suspicious (my research is all about being suspicious in museums) and I assumed the classification was either a) a translation error, or b) a classic case of trying to label an artefact as more exciting than it was. Not possible it’s from a mace, I thought; the haft would have been too narrow to use. And there it was again, in another case, this time flatter and labelled as a 'loom weight', though it was clearly of a different class than the weights it was grouped with.

The funny thing was, I had instantly recognized the class of object from some ethnographic research I’d been doing about pre-industrial tools: it was (I thought) the flywheel weight from a pump drill. An excellent piece of ‘primitive’ technology, and the very same tool – in fact – that was likely used to make the stone’s well-drilled hole in the first place.

I did some digging online, and found that while these objects are found internationally, the “mace head” category seems a bit of a misnomer. These artefacts, labelled "mace heads" since the late 1800s, are classed as decorative because they are absolutely unsuitable as mace heads, and there is longstanding uncertainty about what (if anything) they are actually for.

Rather than being a strangely international, cross-cultural example of a decorative status symbol, each embodying days of skilled, precise labour, I'd argue they are in fact functional components of a highly advanced and practical mechanical tool. Of course, this hypothesis would only apply to examples which have rotational symmetry. Some design elements from particularly interesting examples – such as your image of one from Sard – really become interesting if you imagine them spinning. I'm certainly not suggesting that stone-headed maces did not exist, but that in examples like this, the tiny diameter of the haft in comparison to the weight of the "head" would make the object impossible to use; even ceremonial weapons need to at least look functional!

I’d love to know if there is any contemporary debate / interest about the practical use of “mace heads”, and particularly if anyone has suggested / examined the idea that they represent the only surviving (because non-biodegradable) component of the widespread use of pump drills?

All the best,

Peter

Hello Peter!
Thank you for reaching out with this very interesting topic. I am not an archaeologist either, just someone with passion for history and the "old worlds". Some of my goals and hopes behind these picture contributions to Commons is to make such objects from unknown and underfunded Romanian museums accessible to scientists who can research them.
I couldn't find much around the mace head topic in Wikipedia. Very few things are discussed about the Mace's Prehistory. Probably it would be interesting to read more on the Decea Mureşului culture but most likely there is very little literature, especially in English. Here is some interesting Google Books search results: Decea Mureşului culture mace head, Decea Mureşului culture. Among the hits, I would recommend this really impressive book: The Lost World of Old Europe: The Danube Valley, 5000-3500 BC
Your ideas are fascinating and I wouldn't be surprised if archaeologists misinterpreted the functions of some objects. Worth talking to some of them about your thoughts. The mace head I posted is hosted by the National Museum of the Union in Alba Iulia. I can try to find out the archaeologists involved with it if you want.
I also found this paper by Florin Gogaltan. It covers that mace head and a lot of others I didn't know about, all from Transylvania. Unfortunately it is written in Romanian with a German summary. Google Translate could help and I can to, if you need.
Do you have pictures of the artifact from the Museum of Istanbul? Would be worth posting them to Commons and point archaeologists to them. Maybe there are some connections here.
Best regards!
