New upolad form: some more translations, please? edit

A few more, I'm afraid:

Plus MediaWiki:UploadFormPermissionHint/ownwork. Choose some location in Norway for the Google Map link. (or let it be and I'll choose one.) Thanks for any help you can give. Lupo 16:02, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

  •   Done the Norwegian bokmål (no) versions, I'll do nn later (maybe much later) if noone who really uses that language wants to contribute. The last file is at MediaWiki:UploadFormPermissionHint/ownwork/no, please move it if it should have been /noownwork. Finding a location in Norway turned out to be a challenge (forgot to refresh after changing it and ended up in the US over and over again :P), but I believe I found a mapselection with a few good pics. If anything, I'm reminded that I have to add some more geotags on images from Norway. Finn Rindahl 21:52, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Thank you very much! Yeah, if the Nynorsk writers can't be bothered to translate, they'll just have to live with the English interface. Anyway, once it's live, they'll have those "translate" links, so translation will trickle in then. Lupo 08:01, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you want a coordinate that is in Norway, 61°38'11.13"N 8°18'45.18"E is a possibility. It is also a unique position because it is the highest point in Norway. Haros 09:28, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was concidering 66°11'57"N 13°01'00"E since that's a beautiful locations with lots of high quality images (ahem, or maybe not...), but chose the inner part of Sognefjorden because it makes a good "mapshot" with a eight rather good images. I looked at Oslo also, but there there were so many images already with geotag that a new user could miss the point of necessity about adding new. But I'm happy to change location, if anyone would like that please paste a new link like this one (preferrably with relevant text added) and I'll replace it in the message file.Finn Rindahl 10:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm perfectly happy with that location. Haros 11:03, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Giggy's RfB edit

G'day

I just wanted to say a huge thanks for your support in my RfB. It just closed, and I'm now a bureaucrat. If you ever want to discuss any of my actions, as a 'crat, admin, or plain old user, please don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page.

And thanks for the email - all sorted, I hope. Cheers, giggy (:O) 10:44, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Welcome back edit

...nice to see your retirement was rather short. Your rather aggressive behaviour with regards to how you have edited/moved the FP-template poll/discussion and the way you have communicated since you came back is not helpful to this project though. Please stay mellow, and do not be too bold in taking actions you should now are potentially provocative. I'm not going to revert your edit/move of the poll since that could just make the mess worse. I will however keep an eye on the situation, and prevent editors who deliberately disrupts this project from editing if necessary. Regards, Finn Rindahl 10:44, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

It was quite a bad move by Alvesgaspar to display the poll for what it isn't. I think my change demonstrates
  • the power of the new template
  • the problems posed by the old one.
These two should be vital for a person voting to consider. The old version makes it look as if there was nothing wrong.
I did create a "vote" subsection to ease voting process. It can be removed but I think a lack of it would make people unhappy. We have a similar subsection on other votes such as COM:RFA
I moved the page after making edits to it because I saw Alvesgaspar's post after words (well same time on a different tab - I was too lazy to reformat it a second time while copy pasting.)
-- Cat ちぃ? 11:30, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Judging from how Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Computer (de-adminship) was handled. I do not think I will "return" for a while. I may make a few edits from time to time but I don't think I should be considered "active" here. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:32, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

FP poll edit

Just wanted to commend your masterful closure of the FP poll. Are you a diplomate in real life? --MichaelMaggs 08:15, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! And no, I'm not a real life diplomat ;o) -- Finn Rindahl 10:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Admin Vote edit

Let me tell you friend what happens in real life and if you can fix the situation then I do not need to be an administrator here. People in the wikipedias are trying to do the the right thing by sharing their images so other wikipedias can reuse them. While at it they make a small mistake and admins here punish them instead of working with them. Also some people here have renaming ideas that affect the wikipedias negatively. Commons are secondary to wikipedias so please respect wikipedias. Your primary goal should be to help find things here so they do not have to upload them there. If it is a clear vialotion of the copyright low delete the file, but you have to be 100% sure of that. Right now I see a lot of resentment of Commons as something that can derail a project and make wikipedia pages ugly. Some people started movements of putting images back to the wikipedias --Ilyaroz 15:39, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry if you feel that administrators and/or users at Commons punish instead of working with Wikipedians who upload images here. That is certainly not my experience, but I'm aware that misunderstandings - and sometimes difficult communication due to different languages - may give users that impression.
It is indeed true that the goal of Commons is that mediafiles should be easy avvailable here so that local uploads are no longer necessary. It's not just about accessablitity however, but also to ensure that local wikipedia projects who may be less aware of copyright law unintentionally violates these. You wrote: If it is a clear vialotion of the copyright low delete the file, but you have to be 100% sure of that. - it's the other way around I'm afraid. We can't host a file unless we are sure it is not a copyright violation. Please participate in editing files here at Commons, and help clarifying misunderstanding and misinterpretations if they occur. Your contributions are appreciated. But personally I have to be more convinced that you understand the concept of Commons and of international copyright legislation before I can support your request for adminitstrator-rights here. Regards, Finn Rindahl 15:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am the one who can talk to Russians and Ukrainians - you can't so you do need people like me. Today's case - the file was deleted after beeng the for ever and being used in 80 places. The formal reason - does not have the source (it does have copyleft). The same admin loads other another file of the same image that does have the source. Why just not fix the original image description? His reason - the file was named in Russian with latin transit and he wanted it to be in English. It may be nice to have it in English but why screw so many people? This is that I mean by "but you have to be 100% sure of that". I would like to be able to stop this kind of people to do political damage to the Commons as people see this kind of madness and say "I do not want to deal with Commons". Now give me a spesific example of my not "understanding the concept of Commons and of international copyright legislation". We all can make this kind of statement - now it is time for you to back up your words --Ilyaroz 16:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we very much need committed users and admins who speak Russian! I'm not claiming that you don't understand, I'm saying that I need to be convinced that you do before I can support you. I expect that is a view shared by many other contributors here at Commons. The way to convince myself and others that who have the understandings needed for being an admin here is to keep on contributing to Commons, and through your participation in processes such as COM:DEL show that you've got what it takes. I'm not inclined to change my vote now, but if you demonstrate commitment and understanding I may very well support you in the future. Best regards, Finn Rindahl 16:21, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I can accept that. Thanks --Ilyaroz 16:38, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Translations for UploadForm edit

Hej.

Upload form translations from ja, zh, ... edit

Do you have any idea why there are so many edits at MediaWiki talk:UploadFormLabels/UploadFormTranslations where people don't leave any translation at all? Seems to happen in particular with ja or zh users, though I've also seen one ru user do this. What could be improved to avoid this? Lupo 14:25, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I guess the problem is those links in the untranslated uploadform generating that text directly (just tried it from hungarian version...) When curious users push that link they save instead of going back, without really knowing what they're doing. Maybe we could add some sort of buffer point in between or an extra text saying "Don't press save unless you're really prepared to do some translations yourself" or something... Finn Rindahl 14:32, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I mentioned a different problem at Kjetils talk, don't know if you noticed ;) Finn Rindahl 14:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I did. Let's see what he means about it. I don't think it's a problem, as I expect most of the experienced uploaders not to use the "&uploadformstyle" parameter but the monobook.js config method. If this were to be fixed, I would need to add some code (similar to MediaWiki:UploadFormLinkFixer.js for the "reupload" links) to MediaWiki:UploadForm.js to rewrite these links a little. Lupo 14:38, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well&good then. I'll be off wiki for the next couple of hours, good luck with adding /zh translations ;o) Finn Rindahl 14:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hell, the guy even deleted the section header, so I'll have to dig around to find out whether it's /zh or /ja! Lupo 14:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

RE: Your message edit

I belive you meant to say stay "mellow". Back to the case. I'm sorry for that dispute Finn but the user was acting immature, which I do have to say I also did. More or less it sounded that he shouted against Matt "Do you take me for the village idiot ?" which sometimes can be taken as a personal attack even though he didn't call Matt a village idiot. Sometimes it doesn't work beeing mellow, but usually I am mellow, this is the one case I regret I wasn't mellow, I am sorry for that mistake of mine and changed the opinion on the case. I am a human, we all make mistake. Thanks for looking, Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 07:34, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I meant Melon ;o) User mellow. Glad to see you're sorry about this, let it be a learning experience. There was bad communication, and we almost lost an important contributor over that. Grondin is admin/bureaucrat at 5 or 6 French language wikimedia projects, crat at betawiki as well as involved in other non-wikimedia projects. User with system rights at sister-projects don't have carte blanche do behave differently than any other users, but when recognising that a user is a well respected and valuable contributor at other projects it's a fair assumption that what may seem like rudeness could indeed be caused by problems in communicating in English. Always remember that not everyone is comfortable communicating in English, and that Commons as a project is very different from most other Wikimedia-projects - which tend to make contributors confused and sometimes alienated. Furthermore: the block button (or warnings about it) should not be used lightly. Kanonkas: I went as far as opening the edit window of your RfA to change my vote there, but I didn't. Please learn from this episode so that I will not regret that. Regards, Finn Rindahl 08:11, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I see that you've sorted things out with the user concerned. Well&good, let's put this episode behind us. Regards, Finn Rindahl 08:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

User:Pred edit

Hej Finn.

Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:48, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hehe, tar den :o) . will do, thanks :-) ha en god natt! Yosh3000 (talk) 23:51, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mario Andretti image edit

I ran across an incorrectly named image of his Formula One racecar at Image:Lotus79.jpg while watching his Good Article on the English Wikipedia. A new contributor uploaded this image here with a better name Image:Lotus77.jpg, but he/she missed the copyright information and file history. A better name might be Image:Lotus77MarioAndretti.jpg since he's probably not the only driver to race a Lotus 77. Would you please fix it? I know how much more helpful the admin powers are for things like this. Thanks! Royalbroil 15:17, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I've added Lotus 77 Sears Point.jpg as the original image description did not specifically mention Andretti (could have been captured at a test run or something I suppose). A bot will make the actual reupload. You may make such renaming requests yourself by adding rename and then an admin/ trusted user will (well, probably eventually) approve the bot move. It would of course be easier if you were an admin/trusted user yourself (hint hint). I'll inform the uploader of Image:Lotus77.jpg and have it deleted as a dupe. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 16:07, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, you talked me into it - I applied for trusted user so I could do things like this. I don't understand Commons policy enough to run for admin. Royalbroil 02:01, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
And now you see why I shouldn't be a Commons admin right now! I didn't know that there were different types of trusted users. Would you add me as a trusted user for the move bot? I thought about applying for the flickr trusted user about a year ago, so I still it's worthwhile for me to be able to do this review. Royalbroil 12:33, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Do not request trusted user status if you are not planning on regularly contributing in this field. I doubt I'd use it regularly, so nevermind. Royalbroil 12:38, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hm, too late, already added ;O) Should I remove you again? Finn Rindahl (talk) 12:42, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Trusted users" edit

Hi Finn, how about

I for myself do not feel like a 16-year old boy should have the ultimate decision on a request by someone having some 100.000 edits in enWP [which I did not check], or should I? Giggy besides talks about 500 required edits, which does not seem to be "state of the art" by now ???? --WeHaWoe (talk) 19:25, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, this particular 16 year old boy is one of our admins&'crats, and I trust his judgement enough that I supported him for the latter (I wasn't around at his RfA). Age is not an issue at all here, for all I know the user with 100.000 edits may be 12... That being said, neither Giggy, I or anyone else has "ultimate" decision here: some other user may question the requests I've granted recently and then we'll have to discuss if they should be withdrawn. I'll look into the present request and if I disagree with Giggys decline I'll discuss the matter with him.
I tried to identify where that discussion about 500 edits took place but wasn't successful. As long as the page itself reads 200 edits as minimum requirement I'm sticking to that. I'll also take a look at the formatting of the page - it does seem how to add new requests isn't all that obvious...Finn Rindahl (talk) 19:51, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
As far as I'm aware, that enWP-guy did not cause bullshit there, and 500:200 edits seemed "at least worth while to talk about" to me. BTW, I think it's fine that we'll have aristocats burocrats to survive guys like me. ;] --WeHaWoe (talk) 21:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's not a matter of not trusting the user in general, it's a matter of the user not having enough experience at Commons to be trusted to order renames without this being sanctioned by an admin or MoveBot-trusted user. And do write 'crats like the rest of us , b-u-r-e-a-u-c-r-a-t is impossible to spell ;o) (As for mathematical notation, 500:200 results in 2,5 I believe...) Finn Rindahl (talk) 21:37, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
For having some troubles in deWP at that given time, I was in a mood of joking; I'll however say write 'crats from now on.
Seriously: Would in English 500:200 not be understood as 500 edits (talk page) vs. "minumum 200 edits" (main page)? Or was this your joke?
I BTW was not aware that the request in question was user's first one at all here. --WeHaWoe (talk) 06:30, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Neither was I until I checked (after responding to you here). As for the question of notation I'm sure your right - in Norwegian I would have written 500/200 for "500 vs 200", which from a mathematical point of view equals 2,5 as well... ;o). Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 10:03, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
ack, &eod ;))) Best, --WeHaWoe (talk) 10:50, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

De tre diagrammene jeg i første omgang hadde tenkt å bruke ligger under Category:Economics diagrams Image:Supply-demand-P.png, Image:Price_of_market_balance.gif og Image:Einfacher_Wirtschaftskreislauf.png. Solbris (talk) 20:17, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Solbris (talk) 06:31, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

gl translations edit

I will continue here with my requests for Galician translations. First, I wish to create this pages:

with the followikg text:

My second request is a question. When I go to an upload form (except Special:Upload) I can see my translations but the sidebar, the text above the page ("my talk", "my preferences",...), and the tab "special" appear in English, not in Galician. Do you know what's the problem? --Toliño (talk) 09:07, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Toliño, those pages are created, but I'm really not sure what could be causing that problem you're asking about. I'll try to look at it later, bit short of time right now. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 09:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that there are no /glownwork etc. subpages for all the other elements of the UI in the sidebar and in the topbar. As a result, the server falls back to the default language for these, which is English. Such subpages seem to exist for other languages (see e.g. here). Ask User:Pfctdayelise why these don't exist for all languages, she's running a bot from time to time to maintain these. Lupo 10:26, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Lupo! Finn Rindahl (talk) 10:43, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have more translations to update. Those are the following messages:

I didn't find the message which corresponds to the text "Subpages" in the sidebar. Do you know what message is? (The translation into Galician must be: "Subpáxinas".)

Rename Bot edit

Thanks, sorry, that was my mistake. I forgot how to make template. It shoud be only template:CASTLE PARTY PRODUCTIONS. It is ok. Regards, Lilly M 23:59, 29 June 2008

Image:Desolata.jpg edit

I think you made a mistake. This is the version that should have been kept. This is the name the file has had for more than a year on italian Wikipedia. Both files were transfered using CommonsHelper, and when the file was transferred a second time "(1)" was added because the name was already used by the first transferred file. /Ö 23:13, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The reason was that the imaged was marked "The image to be deleted is this, not the other. This image is corrupted and it can't be displayed on it.wiki --Jalo 21:24, 29 June 2008 (UTC)" - I've restored it again and if this message from Jalo wasn't correct I can order Delinker to reverse this. Awaiting you response, before I do anything further. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:18, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I can see the image on Italian Wikipedia without any problems. I don't know what could be wrong, but uploading a file again with another name should not be necessary. /Ö 23:37, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've left a message for user:Jalo (pr request on his Italian talk), let's await his respose before we revert this. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:56, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
In the it.wiki Help desk 2 users (both admins) asked for help 'cause the "Desolata.jpg" image was marked as NowCommons, but it was not visible into the article if deleted from it.wiki.
We have uploaded on Commons a new version of that file, but the problem was not solved. The problem was fixed only uploading a new file on Commons (Image:Desolata (1).jpg). So I've tagged as duplicate the first one. I've specified that the version to be deleted is this, 'cause if you delete the 2nd we cannot see it on it.wiki.
Now it seems to work; maybe it was only a cache problem. Now you can delete the second one, I'm sorry for the trouble. Bye Jalo 06:10, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I'll ask delinker to switch back and then delete the second upload. Finn Rindahl (talk) 11:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Approving renaming of images edit

Hi Finn, I was pretty close to "approve" your proposal for Image:!!!!0612060146.JPG, but fortunately had a look at the file history before doing so ;))

Question: Would it be manageable, with reasonable effort (by either text="approved" or "pending", or by using a subcategory, depending on "trusted user / admin" status or not), to mark the difference between non- and approved requests? It's not really funny to check each-and-all file histories to find out whether I (=any trusted user) should approve some request, or whether it's already "been done". As I think that user:Siebrand is involved in the design of the bot and the template, I recently started User talk:Siebrand#Template:Rename media. Unless you know a better place for discussion, let's please talk there. Otherwise my (up zo now: monologue) might be moved to any "better place". eod here. I put this question on S's talk page, too. --WeHaWoe (talk) 08:33, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, this is already done - not by sorting out the approved ones but by sorting out the disapproved - see Category:Media renaming requests and its subcat category:Media renaming requests needing confirmation. The latter contains more than 1000 files, so there's plenty of work for willing trusted users. Finn Rindahl (talk) 12:26, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
THAT'S what I wanted to read ;]]] Such should, however, come clear from some description, not from multiple private talks ;) -- I just now did one more note in Commons talk:MediaMoveBot/CheckPage#Instructions (which does not seem to me the very best place to discuss such, either. I'd actually propose either Template_talk:Rename_media or, even rather, Template_talk:Rename) --WeHaWoe (talk) 12:42, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Tried to sort it out, for now discussions are moved to Commons talk:MediaMoveBot. Finn Rindahl (talk) 13:09, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
(after "de:BK") -- Logically, the subcat Category:Media renaming requests needing confirmation should rather read Category:Media requiring renaming but needing confirmation or similar and should rather be subcat (or even upper-cat?) of Category:Media requiring renaming, to avoid confusion with media which will have to be named "from the scratch" [I hope this is understandabel in English -- I mean that "...needing confirmation" media should already have a suggested name, while "...requests..." would NOT.]
I'll be out for next 18hrs or so, therefore, just take your time to think or talk about; in case you do not move this part, meanwhile, I'd do so tomorrow. Best, Wolfgang --WeHaWoe (talk)

Block logs need additional messages maybe edit

I read the block log. I don't know what else to do in a case like that. What would you suggest? -- carol (talk) 10:42, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Block logs/ templates should not contain too detailed information. The short story is that while user:Juiced lemon made some very significant and helpful contributions to commons categories, the user was unable to communicate respectfully with other user and abide by commons guidelines. The user was repeatedly warned and adviced on how to solve these matters, but it did not help. Detailed background in talk page archives and the archives of Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems.
If you want to request an unblock you may do so at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks & protections. I would strongly urge you not to do so however. There is as far as I can see no chance whatsoever that this block will be lifted, and a new discussion on this would just be digging up old dirt without any real purpose. CarolS edit

I made Category:Flora of the Northern Territory and Category:Fauna of the Northern Territory which replaced Category:Flora of Northern Territory and Category:Fauna of Northern Territory both made by CarolS which I added Seecat instead of deletion. She seems to have an issue of me adding the when some of the Northern Territory categorys have the in them (See: Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Flora of the Northern Territory Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Fauna of the Northern Territory). Today she just created Category: The Northern Territory just to prove her point just because no one has agreed with her. She has also insulted me (See: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]) Bidgee (talk) 06:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

then she claims I did it for my photo [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] Bidgee (talk) 06:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Unlikely that CarolSpears‎ will stop until she get her own way. Bidgee (talk) 07:02, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can you revert changes that were made to these categories and put a hold on that as well?

The rules should not (this is my opinion) only be there for naggers and provokers and should also be there for people who are in a position of defense. There was one category which was in each of them:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category%3AEucalyptus_camaldulensis&diff=12613693&oldid=12613143

and: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category%3ALitoria_caerulea&diff=12615960&oldid=12610930 which is confusing to me now, heh.

I am all in favor of not having edit wars, it is the reason I don't edit things while people are working on them and let them know before I make changes.

Thanks, -- carol (talk) 06:42, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

If it matters, "Bidgee" never once questioned my intelligence. -- carol (talk) 06:45, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Noone should question anyones intelligence. Describing other users (implicitly) as "naggers and provokers" isn't very helpful either though. I'm not going to revert or protect those other two Flora/Fauna categories. If there should be community consensus to not have the "the" in categories related to the Northern Territory it could be sorted out then. Based on responses to the deletion request you filed it doesn't really look like that's going to be the result. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 07:03, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
You encourage people to make changes without communication. They deleted a deletion template in their calmness and thoughtfulness and all-knowingness, heh. "Not communicating until the person communicating has tried to say something funny which is easy for even the simpleminded to claim is insulting" is kind of an old trick. You are encouraging passive aggression (if I understand this phrase). The comments were an effort to make this cease. If you revert the changes that were made to what I was working on, and put a hold on it until the tree is finished or until the person with the initial problem learns to communicate -- I think that all comments will stop. It should be interesting to see, eh? -- carol (talk) 07:14, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Delete what? - Finn Rindahl (talk) 08:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The Aussies managed to adopt pop-psychology techniques from USA from the early 90s and do absolutely nothing to improve the area here that contains the images from Australia. It is their footprint, they want the world to see how much they care about the shared resources, unless I got something wrong in my summary of their actions here. A category that I made and populated was deleted. The rest of the categories are still in the mess that they were before I dared to name a category something they did not agree with. I still like the deletion of the deletion template the best.... -- carol (talk) 08:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It wasn't populated and it seems you have an OWN issue since you seem to dislike categories, which are wrongly named, which have been made by yourself deleted. It's been discussed and it was found that Category:Fauna of the Northern Territory and Category:Flora of the Northern Territory to be kepted. Bidgee (talk) 08:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hope you enjoy this conversation. Please have it somewhere else. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 08:34, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, I am not enjoying it. It can end here with the example of how winning a bureaucratic event does not seem to do much to fill the soul nor improve the surroundings. Thank you for ending it, I should show a proper amount of respect for the effort that went into its deletion. Thank you everyone who participated in this improvement of things at the commons. -- carol (talk) 08:39, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changes at pages of Magnus Reitan edit

Hi.

I am the Communications Director for Reitan in Norway. I ask you kindly to stop editing the pages of Magnus Reitan - especially the use of a terrible picture of him. I have now changed it back to a picture that is representative of Magnus Reitan. Please do not delete it.

It was also a lot of wrong facts in the pages of the Reitan family....Had to change them.

Best regards, Solfrid Flateby

Hm, I take it you're referring to the page at wikipedia in Norwegian, no:Magnus Reitan, and that you are user:Solfla. I have not edited the article about Magus Reitan, but I have deleted an image of Odd Reitan, as it seemed to be a copyright violation. If you could confirm your identity via e-mail, and confirm that you hold the copyright to these images of Magnus and Odd they could be kept here at Wikimedia Commons and used in Wikipedia articles in Norwegian or any other language. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 12:12, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Could you help me, please? edit

Hello, I'm having troubles in the over-categorization problem of many articles related to Italy ([11] and [12]), could you test my editions and the related messages? Thanks, --Tano4595 (talk) 15:23, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hm, I'm not really sure I'm the right person to consult about categories - especially with concern to Italy. I try to keep an eye on the category structure under Category:Norway, and we users from Wikipedia in Norwegian tend to be a little possessive about the organisation there. I'm aware that other countries are organised a bit differently, that is not ideal but maybe something we would have to live with. After all, there are differences in political subdivisisons from country to country, Country -> Region -> Province -> County is one version, other countries have it differently. One good rule about wiki-editing - if it is about categories or content - is to discuss first, and make changes afterwards based on consensus or compromise. If someone is arguing against your work with categories for Italian cities, you may want to hold on a bit and try to take some more time to understand what they are upset about. Calling your edits damaging etc is not helpful at all, and I think your response to that was to the point. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 16:13, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, you message is usefull for me. --Tano4595 (talk) 04:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Upload form translations edit

Hej Finn, thanks a lot for doing the mk translations. Just a minor hint: for new languages, it's also necessary to set up the MediaWiki:Uploadfooter messages to enable the display of the new texts. Lupo 22:29, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. Not really sure I understand what these uploadfooters do, but I'll just copy what you just did with /mk . Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 22:49, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
The script doesn't have a hardcoded list of messages to look for. Instead, it looks for HTML elements with appropriate ids on the upload page itself. The Uploadfooters get all those messages onto the upload page (in one blob at the bottom) and hide them from display. Without the Uploadfooters, the script doesn't know about the messages. (If the script tried to read the messages directly, it would have to make an extra HTTP call for each one. Including them all on the upload page itself means the server does all the work, and we get everything in one single HTTP call: the form, the localized labels, and also the English labels as fall-backs. It's much more efficient that way.) Lupo 22:54, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for explaining. I'm still going to copy what you just did instead of trying to understand - I'm obidient but not very smart ;o) Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:03, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template_talk:Painting#Location_created edit

Hi,I would like to have your opinon, there. There is almost no traffic for quite a while and I want to have some feedback on my proposal.

Further, I created today Category:Drawings and other by van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum and a paternal category, for a trial run. At the moment, COM has many of those fancy vGogh paintings, but more than half of vG's work is draughtmanship, and I'd like to create some better balanced view on the oeuvre, soon. I'm uncertain about correct category names, and too stupid to learn it from Commons:Naming categories. A similar question which I asked Siebrand, User_talk:Siebrand#Let's_come_to_the_point: is not answered for three weeks. Do you think my language sounded unfriendly? I for sure did not want to be unfriendly in this case.

Category:Drawings and other by van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum should contain everything except paintings, as I wrote in the description. I was reluctant to create more differentiated similar categories, because they would hold too few items, I suppose. Thisone might however keep two or three dozen, soon. Thanks, and I hope you can afford the time to have a look at my question before Monday (this is when I really would like to start filling this CAT). Wolfgang (talk) 07:32, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hej Finn. EQ neic smax small.gif and Earthquake 20041226 location detail.png do not appear to be identical. The two images also appear to be of the same scale, just different locations on the same map. I don't know how else to dispute status as exact duplicate. Hei, ser at du har laget et kart over Nesna i .svg. Village pump edit

Der Finn, I actually meant what I said. The question of naming in this area is particularly sensitive and hot becuase of what happened there in the Fascist period (if you want to rather say "1922-1945 period" instead, please feel free to do it, but this is the Fascist period anyway) of Italian-only names. As a reaction, a compulsory, official policy of bilinguism was enacted, after decades of disputes (the Italians disliked it, of course). Reverting this hard-fought compromise means going back to the fascist period and to its policy of "the majority has the right to impose its language", which is something I was warning against. If you can find another way to put the issue, please do it, but the fact remains that history is history, and Fascism is a dark page of Italian history we'd rather stay away with. --User:G.dallorto (talk) 13:53, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your kind words. It's really a pleasure doing this, I'm interested in orchids (in the wild, if possible) but I also enjoy very much those wonderful botanical illustrations from the 19th century. There's something in these drawings that I don't see in more modern illustrations, maybe because most of the old engravings are hand-coloured. I'm busy with "Xenia orchidacea" vol. 1 now, also a lot of amazingly beautiful plates, and still a good source of info for sp.-identification. From next week on I shall be looking for real orchids for some time, hope to come back with some good photos. Japanese Art edit

Dear Finn,

I have seen you have done a certain amount of editing on some Japanese art subjects. Hasui & Ota Nampo.

I do not know if you have any Art History education or insights but: In Art History it is of the outmost importance to have visual examples of the subjects discussed (pretty self evident?).

This is why I recently started to put some relevant links to such images. Most of the art history links in wiki are mared by bad images, dubious works, lack of contextual explenations and so on. In the links I provide there are no such blemishes.

I have a 40 year career, in Japanese Art History and related fields, as a professional lecturer, curator and writer about Japanese art.

I have lived and worked in Japan since 20 years.

Best regards from a fellow Scandinavian

Dear fellow Scandinavian. Since you're editing from ip 219.185.152.1 I assume you're the editor who have been adding links at four wikipediaprojects to the site japaneseprints.blogspot.com. I don't have any Art History education or insights but: The way these links have been added by you (and previously by related ip's 219.185.152.27 and 219.185.152.49) indicates inappropriate linkpushing, and was reverted as such meta:User:COIBot/XWiki/japaneseprints.blogspot.com. Please read some relevant pages at Wikipedia in English: wikipedia is not a linkfarm, wikipedia is not a directory, the link fails the external links guideline, and, if you're affiliated with the site you're adding links to, Conflict of Interest. obvious how!? the debate lasts well under 12 hours, 5 opposing votes, all representing effectively the same pov, no reasonable amount of time for others to discuss. i don't think you would appreciate if your prods were treated in this manner. the template was created by a single user, without real consultation, is being used inappropriately, & does not represent com policy. if you don't like me "shouting", you really won't like it when i keep right on shouting until a community concensus recognizes there is a problem here & fixes it Lx 121 (talk) 18:46, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lost in Commons edit

Hello FinnRind,

As my knowledge of bokmal or nynorsk is rather limited (:-), I will keep to English. I tried to create last month a gallery for the Chilean artist Ximena Armas, but I could not create correctly the page [17] (and you deleted the page at the beginning of this month).

I had tried to follow what had been done previously for this other page [18] and which seems to be correct. If you don't have time to explain all the steps, could you suggest me the reading of a specific documentation file? I must admit that I'm a bit lost with Commons...

Thanks beforehand. --Thouve (talk) 08:12, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

My knowledge of French is rather limited as well, so we'll have to stick to English :) I deleted the page because I assumed it was an incorrectly named attempt to create Category:Ximena Armas, I have now restored it (Ximena Armas) and added a gallery with the one file that was in the category. Galleries are for providing a better overview than categories can offer, as it is possible to add additional information and also a selection of representative images (if there are many images in the category). I can't really see the purpose of a redirect gallery like Henri Richelet, but if you could explain why you felt the need for such a gallery I might be able to suggest a better solution.
My apologies for just assuming the gallery was created with an incorrect name, and deleting without notifying you. As for feeling a bit lost in Commons you're not the only one, things are a bit different here than at the Wikipediaprojects. Please feel free to post any questions you might have here, and I'll try to help you find your way. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 11:01, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply, Finn, and do not apologize! You just try to solve the mess I could make. I think my problem comes from the distinction between a category and a gallery, even if both terms seem to be physically stored in the same place by WM Commons. It isn't as trivial as could be thought for a newcomer, and I have to study this further anyway.
In the case of the two artists above mentioned, I thought it would be sensible that each of them have a gallery (with just one pic for the time being, but perhaps more in the future). However, I feel that creating a category 'Henri Richelet' and a category 'Ximena Armas' is not the right way of doing. Or is it? If you feel that one pic isn't enough to build a gallery, just tell me, and we will delete both of them. (Hope all this makes sense.) --Thouve (talk) 12:09, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would stick with only categories for now, for things like artists and their work there is in my opinion no problem with creating an article even if we only have one image (yet). A gallery isn't really of any use until we have more images and thus a greater need to present them. If it's ok with you I would delete those galleries for now (not much work restoring/recreating them later), and use fr:Modèle:Commonscat to link from Wikipedia articles (I changed that now on fr:Ximena_Armas, just revert me if you want to keep the gallery).
I trust in your analysis. Stick to categories, and delete galleries (or tell me how to do). Thanks. --Thouve (talk) 08:18, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks, I've deleted the gallery then. If you ever create a page/file that you on second thought would like to have deleted (or if you come across other pages/files that obviously should be deleted) just tag them with Speedy. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 10:03, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Erased links from March 24 edit

Hi Finnrind, on March 17th I created some external links for the articles of the persons Franck Biancheri, Samuel Kobia, Hermann Scheer, Cem Özdemir, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff ,... Most of the articles are in German and English, but I worked on some French, Italian and Turkish versions as well. What happened is that on March 24th you apparently sent a bot to erase those links. I think this is not justified, as the links lead to non-commercial content (papers and interviews) on www.jpox.eu that actually adds something to the persons profiles (and therefore does not really differ from comparable external links with further info). I also read the specifications from wikipedia on setting links in general and I do not see a violation of these. It may be a mistake of that bot...

I would be happy if you could undo these changes. I could also do that myself, but as I am not an expert on wikipedia I did not want to start 'do' & 'undo' thing that just goes back and forth without actually discussing the matter. Thanks a lot! FX Leach — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.152.226.15 (talk • contribs) 14:47, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi FX Leach, some clarifications: Those links were not removed because the content was inappropriate as such, some links to papers/interviews in this journal may be considered relevant by editors of Wikipedia and added as refrences for facts not given elsewhere. The links was reported by a bot as possible inapproproate linkadditions, and evaluated by me to be inappropriate indeeed. Links to jpox.eu has been added at 8 different Wikimediaprojects by your ip, in something that is clearly an attempt to use Wikipedia to promote this particular journal, and reverted by me/local editors as such. It has not yet been added to Wikimedias blacklist for unwanted external links, meaning that should editors who are actually contributing to Wikipedia by writing articles consider some links to jpox.eu particularly relevant to one or several articles they might be added again.
I'm not going to undo reverting these links, and should you try to do so this would be considered a persistent attempt of promoting this site through Wikimediaprojects. That would lead to blacklisting, i.e. disabling the possibility of adding links to jpox.eu from any wikimediaproject. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 13:43, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bøker edit

Akseptabel kvalitet?

V85 (talk) 11:00, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Finn Rindahl (talk) 14:25, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
For å lage File:Ww2-no.djvu lastet jeg ned File:Ww2-no.pdf, kjørte kommandoen pdf2djvu -o Ww2-no.djvu Ww2-no.pdf (i GNU/Linux), og fikk djvu-filen ut etter ca. ett minutt. Mvh. --Kjetil_r 15:06, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hm... =) V85 (talk) 16:00, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hilsen --Kjetil_r 18:01, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.» hver gang. --Kjetil_r 19:32, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Tusen takk begge to! :D V85 (talk) 11:16, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Finnrind!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
