error trying to upload djvu

I'm trying to upload a djvu format book using the upload wizard, it seems to upload OK, asks me for all the details, such as license, creation date, description, but when I click to finalise the upload, I get:

<api-error-internal_api_error_MWException>

Any help appreciated, Simon Burchell (talk) 15:49, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

I abandoned the upload wizard, used the old form, and all OK - so the problem is with the wizard. Simon Burchell (talk) 15:59, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
I've found no open bug report on phabricator: for this issue. There are two open tasks in a long list with fixed <api-error-internal_api_error_MWException> issues, but they are unrelated to uploads, let alone .djvuBe..anyone (talk) 11:20, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Strange that no-one has mentioned it before - maybe it is a temporary glitch? Or perhaps someone has tinkered with the wizard, and it no loner works for .djvu files. I don't upload them often, and I expect it will be a while before I try another, by which time I'll probably have forgotten about the error... Simon Burchell (talk) 17:42, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Mistake uploading file

I appear to have made a mistake uploading a file. I have asked the copyright holder of an image to email the license agreement to the normal address & he has done that today. Then I uploaded the file :File:Jimmy Doyle musician 1990.jpg to Commons intending to use the OTRS facility. Instead, I have uploaded the file as though Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported already exists for this image, which is not the case. What happens next? My apologies for the inconvenience, and thanking you in advance. CaesarsPalaceDude (talk) 22:18, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

I don’t think that’s a problem: all you need do is add the {{OP}} template (substituted, not transcluded) to indicate that an OTRS request is in process. Assuming that CC-BY-SA 3.0 is the intended licence, that is—if the rights-holder will be using a different version, you should also update the file page to match.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:37, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Thankyou so much; I've got it right now (yes, licence version is a match) CaesarsPalaceDude (talk) 08:07, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
@CaesarsPalaceDude: I notice you replaced the CC-BY-SA template with the OTRS-pending one, instead of just adding the latter, so I restored it for you. OTRS volunteers will want to check the file’s licence against the documentation provided to them; I don’t think they’re supposed to supply one where it’s lacking.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:56, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
That looks better. I'm still learning the difference between substituted, transcluded, and replaced (apparently). Thanks again CaesarsPalaceDude (talk) 09:26, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I just realized how my lapsing into jargon caused the misunderstanding. I was using substitute in the template-related technical sense, meaning to use the subst:modifier, which causes the template’s content to be put into the wikitext in a fixed form, but I can see how it could be misread. (You did that part right; the {{OP}} appears to have replaced itself with a dated {{OTRS pending}}.) Without the modifier a template is transcluded, meaning its content is not inserted until the page is composed for display, so always shows its most recent state (in theory at least—sometimes the servers get behind). For more detail and examples of usage see w:Help:Substitution.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:56, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

I was asked to post a photo to the page of an artist (musician) and he sent one, but I did not take it

I was asked to post a photo to the page of an artist (musician) and he sent me one he'd like to be posted on the page about him. but I did not take it. Do I need to find out who took the original photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lelectra (talk • contribs) 03:59, 24 March 2015‎ (UTC)

Yes; the photographer should send formal permission (under a free licence, not just “to use on Wikipedia“ or similar) to COM:OTRS; there’s a boilerplate consent letter on that page. Unless the photo was taken under a contract explicitly transferring copyright to the subject (or someone else), the creator is presumed to own the rights.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:35, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
I have a similar question. I received permission by e-mail from the author of a picture - an actor, to upload it on the actor's Wikipedia page. Do I send the author the OTRS e-mail template, let him send it back to me signed (would that be signed on printed paper, scanned and e-mailed back to me?) and then I send it to permissions(at)commonswikimedia.org? How long does it usually take for them to react to my e-mail? And the e-mail template says "I hereby affirm that: [I, (name here), am] OR [I represent (copyright holder's name), ] the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of.." -- I am not the author but I also do not represent the author. Can I just write "I hereby affirm that: [author's name], the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of.."?icla (talk)
From what you’ve said about the permission you already received, it sounds insufficient for hosting here: a free licence for general reuse is required (as indicated on the consent template you’ve looked at). And it’s assumed to be the photographer, not the subject, who owns the rights on a portrait, unless they’ve been explicitly transferred under a commission contract or other legal provision. At any rate, it would be best if the rights-holder can send the permission e-mail directly, from a verifiable address (e.g. his or her official website domain): that way I don‘t think any signatures or scans will be required, and the process is simpler all around. As for the time it takes, I gather four to six weeks is typical.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:21, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Odysseus! That helps a lot. And yes, it's best that I send the e-mail template to the author, let him fill it in and send to permissions/commonwikimedia. Once he has the reply I can upload the picture for him, I guess. I don't want to bother him with having to create a Wikipedia account, unless he wants to. Thanks again! --Icla (talk) 14:39, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Please see COM:OTRS#If you are not the copyright holder, @Icla. The recommended procedure is to get confirmation of the author’s intent to give permission, then upload the photo with the {{OP}} template, and then to have the author send the consent letter naming the file(s) here. If the letter is sent before the image has been uploaded, it must mention your account as the ‘designated uploader’, and describe the file(s) very specifically (e.g. by serial number in metadata), in order for the OTRS agent to able to ‘connect the dots’ without more correspondence back and forth.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 16:53, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again Odysseus! I'm not an English native speaker and this is becoming a bit complicated. Well, not that complicated but I was really hoping not to have to bother the author of the picture so much. But so basically I can already upload the picture with the OP stamp (which means it's got a pending license, yes?). Then the author sends the e-mail with link to the picture (that would be the link to the Wikipedia page where I uploaded the picture (as OP)?), our e-mail exchange via the e-mail template to Wikimedia permissions and waits for the reply and the picture will eventually get the right license featured? I am away for a few days now, but will get this going upon my return. I might have more questions! :D Thanks again for all the help and Happy Easter! --Icla (talk) 02:20, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Hi Odysseus1479, so I am back and I will upload the picture with an OP stamp license. I hope I am doing the right thing! :D EDIT: I have uploaded the picture in Wikimedia Commons, but I am not sure where and at what point I am/was supposed to add the {{OP}} template. I fear that my uploaded picture will be deleted if I don't add it. Thank you! --Icla (talk) 22:00, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Restoring a deleted photo

I uploaded a picture years ago; File:LasseViren20K-2008.jpg which apparently was deleted. I don't monitor wikimedia so I don't know when an issue is being discussed. It would be nice if a time dated message about deletion of content would spread wiki wide. I digress. I found the photo in my collection and though it would be appropriate for a wikipedia article Lasse Viren Finnish Invitational, which I obviously also did when I uploaded it first time. At the time, apparently, the wikipedia management assumed all uploads to be copyright violations and routinely deleted everything. I don't know how I succeeded in convincing you that all the content I upload is my own work and I give the release, but I have not been harassed in years, fortunately. This occurred before that. How do I restore the image? How might I track down and restore other images I have perviously contributed and have had inappropriately deleted? And in the broader sense, how do we improve communication, to put urgent messages on a wiki wide alert? And how do we make this process friendlier to newbies; to remove the presumption of guilt from the system? Trackinfo (talk) 23:24, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

According to the file page, that picture was deleted in January 2011 because the original from Flickr was released under CC-BY-NC 2.0; the NC condition forbids commercial use, making it ineligible to be hosted here. So I don’t think anyone was making assumptions or deleting blindly in this case (although we do have a precautionary principle that weighs in favour of deletion when the available information is insufficient to determine a work’s copyright status). Nor do I think there’s any question of “guilt” or blame: such may apply in cases of deliberate copy-vio uploads in the face of warnings, or fraudulent alteration of licences, but otherwise the usual presumption is a good-faith mistake or misunderstanding of policy.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:36, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
Normally, you'd be notified on your user talk page when a file is tagged for deletion, and you have the option of enabling e-mail notifications for changes to your talk page. In this case, you weren't notified; I'm not sure why. As seen in the file's log and at https://www.flickr.com/photos/47817241@N00/3103080923, the file is published under a non-free {{cc-by-nc-2.0}} license. You even acknowledged that yourself in the permission field when uploading. You'll notice that {{cc-by-nc-2.0}} is speedy deletion tag, because content restricted to non-commercial use is not permitted on Commons. If you want this file restored, you'd first have to ask the author to change the license. If they do, you can request undeletion. I don't see any other red-linked files in your log, so you don't appear to have any other deleted uploads. LX (talk, contribs) 06:30, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

I need you help uploading an authorized Self portrait of Senator Mario Scavello. I am not an experienced Wikipedia user and getting frustrated trying to use this system.

I have already uploaded his new image ScavelloPortrait but have not inserted the correct copywrite information.

Can you help?

Hi Drapnab! According to the information you provided when you uploaded the photo, the author is Doug Gross. Is that you? I ask because {{PD-self}} should only be used for content that is your own personal creation, and there is no obvious connection between that name and your user name. Adding that tag is easy – just use the edit tab on the file description page and add {{PD-self}} on the line below =={{int:license-header}}==. However, since this is a professional photograph that has been previously published elsewhere, you will also need to e-mail a release statement from an e-mail address that can be recognized as official (like one ending in @pasen.gov). What is the best way to replace my college's logo on our official Wikipedia page? I am a new user, so it tells me I am not confirmed. RoseStateCollegeITS (talk) 16:03, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Based on your user name, I'm guessing that the logotype in question is File:Rose State College logo.jpg.
Here on Commons, we can only host content that is in the public domain or published under a free license (a copyright license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes). File:Rose State College logo.jpg can be hosted on Commons, because it only consists of text and simple geometric shapes, making it ineligible for copyright protection. If the new logotype is more complex and thus eligible for copyright protection, it cannot be hosted here unless the copyright holder is willing to publish it under a free license. (It could, however, be locally hosted on English Wikipedia as non-free fair use content.) If a license is needed and the copyright holder is willing to grant it, see Commons:OTRS for instructions.
Assuming the new logotype can be hosted on Commons, you can upload it under a different file name instead of uploading a new version of the existing one. If the new logotype is available in a more suitable file format for this type of graphic (i.e. SVG or PNG rather than JPEG), uploading that would be the preferred option, and then the file name would have to be different anyway. Then you'd just have to edit the Wikipedia article to point to the new file name.
Commons:Guidance for paid editors contains additional information that may be relevant. If you have further questions, just come back here and ask. LX (talk, contribs) 17:06, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Copyleft content in my work

I have a situation where I want to use a photography to make a picture for Wikipedia article. I found it on photographer's page which has a copyleft license mark in the footer. All the information about copyleft I found on Wikipedia and it's clear. However, there's also a notation made by author on the page, which stands: "You can use these photographs to create your own work of art as long as you give credit. Talk to me if you want to make profit." As I see it, I can use the photography to create my own work as long as I give credit which I understand as mentioning whose photography I based my work on.

I found a photography which I want to use but only a half of it has the contents related to the article. So I cropped it and resized. I also sharpened the photo, brightened and blurred a part of it to expose essential details. And now I want to upload it as my work to Wikimedia Commons.

Here's how I see it:

  • I'm allowed to use the photography to create my own work, which I already did
  • I'm going to inform whose photography I used in my work, which fills out "giving credit", according to the information I found online
  • I'm not going to make any profit of it or of my work, I'm going to upload my work to Wikimedia Commons under a free license

And now I have the question if I understood everything correctly or I am wrong? (for additional information: the photography is taken in US) — Preceding unsigned comment added by LaAstra (talk • contribs) 13:08, 15 April 2015‎ (UTC)

The Talk to me if you want to make profit seems to conflict with the copyleft license (which one?). It would help enormously if you could provide a link to the website you are talking about. It might be necessary to ask the photographer for clarification. (The problem is: While you won't make any profit, all media on Commons must be free for anyone to use for commercial purposes. If potential re-users have to ask the photographer first, we can't host the file) --El Grafo (talk) 14:07, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

As decimal degrees (rather than degrees, minutes and seconds). So 51.751982,-1.25769 (rather than 51° 45′ 7″ N, 1° 15′ 27″ W) for Oxford. Can I upload to Wikipedia from my personal blog page and how do I do this — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael Guzder (talk • contribs) 07:52, 23 April 2015‎ (UTC)

@Michael Guzder: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, the central media repository for all Wikipedias and other projects, too like Wikivoyage. Commons:First steps is a good introduction to our project.
The files you would like to upload must fit into our project scope and must be an allowed file format (the latter is verified automatically, so don't worry). We only accept freely licensed files (anyone will be able to re-use your files for any purpose, including commerical ones [concerning copyright law]).
As for the beginning we usually recommend just uploading files you really want to use in Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project. If we see it's okay, we might provide you with instructions about how to transfer files from your servers more quickly than downloading them onto your hard drive an uploading them again to Commons.
When you decided to upload a file, just go to Commons:Upload and select your preferred upload method there. The Upload Wizard is nice for newcomers but sometimes suffers from technical glitches.

Hi,

I have uploaded two pictures and they were deleted because of no copyright.

Those are the images provided by a Art Council who want to set up an wikipage. The pictures was a page scanned from a book. What should I included in in order to pass the copyright criteria?

The two images are : File:YADDO Writing Retreat-1930.jpg|thumb|A picture of a family &

File:With Margaret Wooters.jpg|thumb|A picture of a couple

The required copyright information for each file is the name of the author, the source i.e. where you found it, and most importantly - the license (if it is still copyright-protected) or an explanation for why the image is in the public domain (with appropriate tags). You wrote that the Macedonian Art Council was the author and source but provided no license. Clearly the photos were taken by somebody rather than an organisation, so we need the name of the photographer. Additionally the date required in the file summary is the date the image was created, not the date you uploaded it here, because that is recorded automatically and can be found in the file history at the bottom of the file page. Upload problems

Is anyone aware of any issues with the upload page? I can't seem to get past the name/description/date/category steps, as clicking next has no effect. I've tried giving it time and restarting the upload after clearing my cache, all with no luck. MjolnirPants (talk) 15:16, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

If you mean the Upload Wizard, it has been perpetually breaking down since it's coders lost interest. I would recommend using the old upload form instead. Green Giant (talk) 16:17, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Hmmph. Well, thanks for the tip, I got it done. MjolnirPants (talk) 17:39, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Large djvus not uploading

I've been getting the same error that was described at Commons:Upload_help/Archive/2015/04#error trying to upload djvu. I've tried both the upload wizard and chunked upload to no avail. Anyone know what's going on?

Peter Isotalo 20:59, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

The file I'm consistent having trouble with (a .dvju conversion of this pdf). It's odd, because I've uploaded larger .dvjus before (File:Cajsa Warg.djvu, 400+ MB).
Rillke, I used your script to upload the Cajsa Warg file back in November last year. Can you help out in any way?
Peter Isotalo 09:33, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
If the error message was an API upload error with mw-exception, the issue is server-side and is tracked on phab:T94562 -- Rillke(q?) 15:17, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
My understanding of coding is pretty poor. If it's of any help, please add that the problem seems to occur with very large .djvu-files as well as multiple uploads. The file that keeps failing is 139.2 MB.

Upload way

Can I upload via url ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patarmalik (talk • contribs) 16:04, 15 April 2015‎ (UTC)

No; only administrators can do that, and only from a limited set of sites. Most of the content you find on the Internet is not in the public domain or published under a free license, and therefore cannot be uploaded to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 17:39, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
How about toollabs:url2commons? --Geohakkeri (talk) 13:24, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
One finds out something new every day at this place. I get only 27 hits when searching for this name. Where has this tool and the instructions on Commons policies that it provides (or rather doesn't) been discussed? Is there a tracking category for files uploaded with this tool? This doesn't feel like something we should be recommending to new users in its current state. LX (talk, contribs) 16:25, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
Ping: Magnus Manske --Geohakkeri (talk) 07:59, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
This tool predates the Commons build-in URL upload function. No "policy discussion" has ever taken place, AFAIK. Use it, improve it, or ignore it. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:26, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
