#VisibleWikiWomen edit

Aadele,

Hello! I am so excited to get the opportunity to hopefully get information from you regarding #VisibleWikiWomen for an essay we are working on for the Women in Red project of the English Wikipedia site. I am looking for any biographical information on the campaign such as when it was started and particular facts or statistical data showing the goals and impact of the campaign that would be useful for anyone seeking projects, task forces, campaigns and initiatives supporting women and women related topics on our various Wiki-sites. Very recently several of our editors expressed the desire to try and pull all of our various projects into an essay style list in the hopes of combining our efforts to increase visibility of our shared concerns about the gender gap and gender bias that still exists on Wikipedia. We feel this essay will offer the opportunity to guide new editors and experienced editors, alike, to all of the projects that support women on Wikipedia and Wikimedia in the hopes of bolstering activity and the exchange of ideas. As women we understand the power of creativity we possess and it comes in many forms. It should be celebrated and developed. We don't want one ounce of that creativity being wasted simply because of the lack of knowledge that our projects exist and we see this essay being a way to educate editors on how to get involved and give them the opportunity to pick where they feel their efforts would be most impactful. If there is someone else that would be better to speak with concerning this effort then please guide me in the right direction. Thank you for all you have done for Indigenous communities and women, respectively, and I look forward to your response.

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.
