Baiji images

edit

Hi, I saw in your description of your excellent image of a preserved chinese paddlefish that you had cropped out a preserved specimen of a Baiji, would you happen to have an image of a preserved Baiji from the museum that could be uploaded to commons? @Hemiauchenia: Hi Hemiauchenia, thank you for your message. And this is my reply, as follows: (Please don't mind if there's any grammar mistake)
Yes, just as you've mentioned, I visited that museum in August 2017 and took a number of photos there, including specimens of Baiji Dolphin. However, may I sincerely apologize that there's a strong probability that I will not upload any of those images to Commons. (I'll explain the detailed reasons in the following paragraphs)
Firstly, as the author of these photos, I have to admit that though these images are apparently unique, as few or even none of the photos of them were released on the Internet before. However, the quality of these photos is largely affected due to the angle and the light illumination in the museum, as well as the type of the camera I use (An amateur digital camera that was released in 2011, approximately 16 million pixels) and the poor photographing skills I have. Apparently, these photos need further enhancement, but not now.
The major reason why I delayed the enhancement and upload is that currently I'm busy preparing the university entrance exam (known as gaokao "高考" in China; it's quite fierce because approximately 10 million students attend the nationwide exam each year, only a few of them can enter key universities in China).
Therefore, I intend to upload all those photos I've taken once I finish the examination; but I partly changed my decision once I heard the news of the paper that suggests the reevaluation of the conservation status of Chinese Paddlefish, however.
Last but not the least, from your previous editing on enwp I may infer you are a British Wikipedian who is probably a zoologist or an enthusiast of zoology (I don't know if it's right), and I have to say, I appreciate your endorsement of those tiny works I've done, as well as your significant contribution to the Chinese Paddlefish article on enwp. (The corresponding article in Chinese is not even qualified for a DYK, though) And I'll consider uploading the photo of best quality if you urgently need it. Thanks and regards, --Alneth (talk) 18:06, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Alneth: I'm well aware of what the Gaokao is, and having done university entrance examinations myself, I know what the pressure is like. I wish you the very best of luck. You shouldn't be too hard on yourself, your image of the preserved specimen of the Chinese Paddlefish is easily one of the best images of the fish on the internet. Given the extreme pressure of the exams, don't worry about anything else. Wish you all the best Hemiauchenia (talk) 18:20, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

I also came here looking for Baiji pictures! I hope the entrance exams went well for you, especially during this time. I didn't know there were editors of the English wikipedia in China, especially pre-university. For me at least, I feel like I would have to study Chinese for another 20 years before I felt comfortable writing in your language! So your contributions are all the more impressive, thank you.
