Some general tips...
editHi, and welcome to Commons! I was very pleased to see your contributions to commons, with uploading the bus images etc. My favorites are File:Dennis Dart T273JKM at Bluewater.jpg and File:Wilts & Dorset 713 at Romsey.jpg, especially the former, as it was quite a prominent route before Fastrack came along.
Anyway, I thought I'd tell you about some of the usual practices with bus images at Commons. I too upload bus photos here, and have loads more to upload (I have a big backlog at the moment!).
- Naming
The current general "practise" is to have the bus' operator, fleet number and registration number in the file name. For example, I upload my images now as "File:Bus company 000 (AA59 ABC).JPG". For example File:Southern Vectis 1149 HW09 BCO.JPG.(with space in registration mark) Of course, if you want to add any more details into the file name then that's fine, but try not to make it too long! There quite a few bus images kicking around batch uploaded by another user that have huge long names, these get looked on unfavorably, and tent to get bits cut of by admins if the page is moved or anything!
- File description
Obviously here you are free too add anything you wish, including details about what the bus does now if things have changed since the photo was taken (like you did with the Salisbury park and ride Excel), or to add further relevant info (like the more Volvo in Salisbury!). However, as a baseline, I use: "{{en|1=Bus company name (bus fleetnumber) (bus' name if it has one) (bus reg), a Bus type (chassis)/Bus type (body), in (road name), (town/city), on route xxx." For example, this would come out looking something like this: "Southern Vectis 1149 Colwell Bay (HW09 BCO), a Scania OmniCity, in South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, on route 3.
- Links to Wikipedia
As you may have noticed, standard Wikilinking, i.e like this, doesn't work. You have to do cross wiki linking, which worked like this (e.g. Wilts & Dorset, which shows Wilts & Dorset. You have to "pipe" the link and type it twice so it shows properly. The ":en:" is for en Wiki. Obviously. you only link if there is an article on the English Wikipedia that it can link to!
- Categorisation
This is the most important and matters the most. As you may have seen, bus photos in the UK are worked from Category:Buses in the United Kingdom. Please ignore the large backlog of files in there, it's being worked on!!!
There are seven sub cats buses should be put under.
Obviously, there's other categories that are relevant, like Category:Buses in Horsham etc, where a new cat has been created (because there's lots of photos of buses in Horsham, then you can add that. Also the bus types, like Category:Volvo B7TL should be added too!
Overall
editI don't want to feel like I've just thrown tonnes of instructions at you, but I'd thought I've give you the main tips. In reality, you can do what you want, there's loads of leeway. The advantage of Commons over Wikipedia is that commons sense is allowed! It's only really the categories that it matters that's it is done the nice way. If you don't feel like you can do it, then don't worry, that's fine, I'll just keep an eye out for any images you upload!
It is relatively simple though. I have sorted some of your images to the category scheme File:Wilts & Dorset Optare Excel 3609.jpg is one, and on edit view you can see how structured it is.
I hope this helps. Despite the vast amount of words I've written here (sorry!), I don't want to pressure you in to anything - at the end of the day it's your choice. I just want to keep some kind of regularity going. If you need anything please ask! Arriva436talk/contribs 23:21, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Further stuff
editI've just thought of something - Category:Trains of the United Kingdom is done in a similar way, though I don't "do" trains so I don't know that much about it. Also, in terms of the bus sub cats, if one of them cannot be determined, and it is basically impossible that it ever will be, then just leave it out of that category.
I thought that other things you might like to consider are creating a User category, so you don't have to add loads of images later when you decide to have one. Commons:Geocoding is nice too although by no means necessary. Once again, if you need any help please ask! Arriva436talk/contribs 23:33, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
