Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

For example one photo used in this montage - File:Pregnancy 26 weeks.jpg - is published under a Creative Commons Attribution license. The authors granted you permission to reuse this photo under that license, but you MUST fulfill the license requirements. Thats very simple, you must attribute all authors of the work. I think it is self-evident not to just klick on "this file is my own work" because it not is entirely your own work. Klick on "its not my own work" and include all sources and all authors, maybe including your own montage work. If you missed that in the upload process I also think it is self-evident to care for good sourcing and correct attribution immidiately following the successful upload. --Martin H. Yes, thanks for the response, and the following is not against you. But that's utter bullshit, I went though that "it's not my own work" thing, couldn't find a way through the maze, ended up not being about to upload. Saying that it was "Under copyright from other images already in commons" as I did [1] should have been completely sufficient. If anyone wants to challenge it, they should go find out that I was lying about it. I'm just experimenting now:

We not talk about the licensing, we talk about sources. Upload Wizard -> upload -> This file is not my own work. -> Source: provide links to the files you used -> Author: provide the names of all authors. Thats it.

Now comes the license selection. See Commons:Collages, you can create collages of freely licensed media files if the licenses are compatible. In this case you used File:Pregnancy 26 weeks 1.jpg and others. That file is published under a free Creative Commons license. The right option of your above selection is: The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons license. The license selection then is either Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 or Creative Commons Attribution 2.5. --Martin H. (talk) 17:58, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
