Your uploads

edit

Hello, thank you for uploading the mostly U.S. Navy-related photos. However, I have a few suggestions that may enhance your uploads:

  • file naming: Please remember that Wikipedia is not a forum for military enthusiats (I partly consider myself one...). Your file names are not understandable for anyone outside the U.S. Navy fighter community and they mostly do inadequately describe what is shown on the photo (what, where, when). For example, I got "Vorse VF 80" renamed into "Admiral Radford and Commander Vorse on USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) on 6 November 1944", as RAdm Radford and date and place are not named.
  • source: if you look at the above photo you can see that I added the direct link to the photo at the U.S. Naval history and Heritage Command. If possile, you should give the direct link to the photo and the description page.
  • categories: please use as many specific categories as possible. Your "IntrepidSkyhawk" photo was just in the general "Douglas A-4 Skyhawk" category. However, there are hundreds of A-4 photos. I put it in the correct categories "Douglas A-4B Skyhawk museum aircraft" and "Aircraft at Intrepid Air-Sea-Space Museum".
  • dates: please do not use the U.S.-American date of month/day/year, as this is uncommon on the rest of the world. If you use "year-month-day", like 2016-10-21, it will be shown in the way the user specifies it (country-specific).
  • quality of photos: if you are able to, you can crop photos or enhance the colouring, levels etc. See the Vorse/Radford photo.

I hope you don't mind my suggestions, but with over 34 million photos on Commons, it is necessary to be as specific as possible. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Happy uploading! Cheers Cobatfor (talk) 18:16, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

I appreciate this very much, actually. This will assist me re: future uploads. The easier the images are to search for or use as stepping stones themselves for others' further research, the better. I'll try to apply these principles when next I upload some Navy photos! Cheers, Finktron (talk) 11:09, 22 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, I don't see much improvement, see File:Official Navy Portrait 1967.jpg. Official portait of whom? When? File:E.C. Outlaw Lucky Bag.jpg why not "Edward C. Outlaw in January 1935"? also the categorizing needs improvment. C.E. Harris may have served on the USS Intrepid (CV-11), but that is no reason to put the photo of him in 1967 into the USS Intrepid (CV-11) category. Where is the carrier in this photo? Also, try not to use the categories "United States Navy" or "United States naval aviation", as these are much too general and generally overcrowded. Be specific in the file names and the categories. It saves others much time! Thank you Cobatfor (talk) 12:11, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
