First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

BCE

edit

Hello,

You have created several categories about ice age, ending with BCE. In my opinion, this notation is inaccurate, since in geology years are counted before 1950, not before 1 AD. The correct notation is BP, for Before Present. --Juiced lemon 23:43, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Juiced lemon - I will remember that when editing later - thanks. I not anyone else change it, I will change when I have the time. --Glenn 06:28, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi Juiced lemon - it has now been changed. --Glenn 07:37, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category:Pendulums

Hi Nbrouard - Placing those article was a first categorisation, later me or other can move some of those article in some of the articles in subcategories. --Glenn 05:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category:Modulation

edit

Hi ! Thank you for the cleaning ! The place is now shining :) One remark : maybe Pulse amplitude modulation and Pulse width modulation should not be in Amplitude modulation, because they may contain only numerical modulation ? Regards --Zedh 00:08, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Zedh - Thanx for your appreciation. I think of amplitude modulation as a broad category - and therefore encompasses all amplitude like modulation. Please read this: [1] Quote: "...A simple form of AM often used for digital communications is on-off keying, a type of amplitude-shift keying by which binary data is represented as the presence or absence of a carrier wave. This is commonly used at radio frequencies to transmit Morse code, referred to as continuous wave (CW) operation....". Regards --Glenn 22:29, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
ok, but in this case every modulation could be used for digital communications, for example Frequency modulation and RDS systems .. therefore I agree that multiple categorization will be usefull for searching images. So this is a good solution --Zedh 20:23, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Glenn!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:NICAM-spectrum.png

edit

File:NICAM-spectrum.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category:High-rises

edit

High-rises has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Category:River Manifold

edit

I have removed your recent additions since the river has no connection to manifolds in either mathematics or engineering, so these categories are irrelevant. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:17, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but it was temporary - later exchanged with "see also"-links. --Glenn (talk) 16:20, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reminder

edit

Hi Glenn. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request. Here, Delete is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:17, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I have read it and seen that someone else has done what was required. --Glenn (talk) 21:00, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
