Making maps

Thanks for the barnstar. If you want to make similar maps then just save Image:BlankMap-World6, compact.svg to your computer and open it in a text editor (simple is usually better, Wordpad on Windows works well). Quite early on you will find instructions on how to create derivative maps (using the text editor). The country codes that you need can be found at en:ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. The colours are Hex triplets and a good selection can be found on en:List of colors. For an example on how the final code would look you can open Image:IILWY map.svg in a text editor and search for the lines following /*Info added by Lokal_Profil */. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
