Picture of the Year 2013 R1 AnnouncementEdit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!Edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2012 Picture of the Year contest.

Miriam MakebaEdit

Greetings, Jan. File:Miriam_Makeba_(1969).jpg, which you uploaded, is part of a featured article review on en.wiki. I was hoping you could explain its copyright status in detail. Why is the National archive able to list it as public domain? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 17:22, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

The photograph of Miriam Makeba was made by a photographer of ANEFO (Algemeen Nederlandsch Fotobureau). The photo archives of this press agency were handed over to the National Archives of the Netherlands in 1996 (Open Cultuurdata - in Dutch). They form a set of 356,000 press photos from the Netherlands (and abroad!) covering the period 1959-1989. 310,000 of these photographs have been given a CC-0 license by the National Archives in April 2017 (originally, they were given a CC-BY-SA license; more information here). The collection is accessible via: http://www.gahetna.nl/en Vysotsky (talk) 11:50, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

Correct licensing?Edit

Hello Jan Arkesteijn, Re your upload of File:Fats Domino (1962).jpg which you licensed as {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}, shouldn't this be {{cc0}} according to the Nationaal Archief source and this? If JGHowes talk - 23:50, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

You're right, at the moment of uploading the license was cc-by-sa. The Archief changed that later for all images in CC0. It's to much to go over all my uploads. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 08:02, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

Source portrait of Sebastian I of Portugal by Sanches CoelhoEdit

Hi! I'm currently writing an article about the portraits of Sebastian I and I haven't been able to find the source of this portrait in which he appears as a child. Could you add the source from which you took it, if you know in which museum can be found right now? I would be very grateful. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.142.245.111 (talk) 19:19, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
