Picture of the Year 2013 R1 AnnouncementEdit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!Edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Gelieve categoriën aanmaken die meer dan een categorie hebbenEdit

Beste Jan

Alsvast bedankt --Vera (talk) 10:20, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Photograph Astrid RoemerEdit

Dear Jan Arkesteijn, You "normalized" the photograph of Astrid Roemer by Raúl Neijhorst, by removing the tip of her protruding tongue from her lips. The photograph was donated via Wikiportrait, and made by photographer Raúl Neijhorst, who is famous for his "creative and original portrait photographs". Astrid Roemer is famous for her original literary work, and lkes to go against the grain. The original photograph must therefore have been intentionally obstinate. The photograph had a CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, so you have every right to make a new version. However, the photograph as it was placed in Wikipedia should in my view not have been replaced by a "normalized" photograph, because the original photograph exactly reflects Roemer's character. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I intend to undo your changes on Wikidata and EN/ES/NL-Wiki within a few days, if the discussion doesn't prove me wrong. Vysotsky (talk) 11:24, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Vysotsky, I didn't know it reflected her character. I thought it was an unsuccessful portrait, a picture from the bin, because we received it for free. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 16:19, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

File:Woman in a surreal pose.jpgEdit

Hello, Jan, to avoid confusions it would be much better to upload the unaltered image, as well, and then to point from File:Woman in a surreal pose.jpg to this (template {{Derived from}}). Additionally a note for the intentional rotation for the intended effect could be added. I would have, too, requested the rotation or even rotated the image myself. — Speravir – 22:15, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

Miriam MakebaEdit

Greetings, Jan. File:Miriam_Makeba_(1969).jpg, which you uploaded, is part of a featured article review on I was hoping you could explain its copyright status in detail. Why is the National archive able to list it as public domain? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 17:22, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

The photograph of Miriam Makeba was made by a photographer of ANEFO (Algemeen Nederlandsch Fotobureau). The photo archives of this press agency were handed over to the National Archives of the Netherlands in 1996 (Open Cultuurdata - in Dutch). They form a set of 356,000 press photos from the Netherlands (and abroad!) covering the period 1959-1989. 310,000 of these photographs have been given a CC-0 license by the National Archives in April 2017 (originally, they were given a CC-BY-SA license; more information here). The collection is accessible via: Vysotsky (talk) 11:50, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
