Picture of the Year 2013 R1 AnnouncementEdit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!Edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2012 Picture of the Year contest.

Sorry. I was trying to help - and got it wrong. I think you should have downloaded the full size first, and made another version from that. Secondarywaltz (talk) 20:11, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Violation of a community approved edit-restriction (Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Archive_57#Proposal). As per consensus on the aforementioned page, you have been blocked for violating the restriction just recently. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:41, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason.

Request reason: "Unjustly blocked by Fae/Steinsplitter: Please look at the examples Fae supplied. The first one was very bad quality, the second one was very bad quality, the third one was rotated right, the fourth one was a file I originally uploaded myself."
Decline reason: "I am sorry but Davey explains it perfectly well. You got a community based sanction that you should not overwrite any other uploads other than your own which still leaves us with three violations if we ignore your own upload. Natuur12 (talk) 15:46, 22 June 2016 (UTC)"

Administrators: This template should be removed when the block has expired.

  • "Jan Arkesteijn must not overwrite any file on Commons that is not their own original upload, until they are prepared to comply with the official guideline Commons:Overwriting existing files. In particular they are forbidden to overwrite any photographs or derivatives of artworks, these will be considered controversial changes. They remain free to create new files and to create separate derivatives of existing files."
What part of this didn't you understand ? ... It stated unless you're the original uploader that you shouldn't upload new versions of files ..... yet you completely ignored it and proceeded to upload new versions anyway (I appreciate there may be language barriers but this was in simple and basic English!),
The block was completely justified and if you carry on once your block's expired you'll end up indeff'd which trust me you don't want to happen!,
You shot yourself in the foot so therefore the block is as I said justified. –Davey2010Talk 15:19, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
The guideline Commons:Overwriting existing files allows for Minor improvements, which are not extensively listed. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 15:42, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
Jan, why take the hard way ? What is proposed to you is to create separately a new file instead of overwriting the existing one. Isn't this a very small price to pay to find a consensus Clin ? You may then, if you wish, link the old file to the new one with {{other}} and even - cautiously - propose to advise users to prefer the new one with {{superseded}} (I would advise you to propose first, wait a few days and do it only if there is no disagreement ; and to avoid reverting on this). In any case, I suggest you to show you understand other people concerns and to discuss with the admins who blocked you or confirmed your block in order to establish a clear procedure for the future. — Racconish ☎ 16:37, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Please do not send any email to me, unless there is a private issue. I understand you want to improve images, but you need to respect consensus, and listen to advice by experienced users. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:42, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

@Steinsplitter:@Natuur12:This is all very disappointing. Since this discussion settled the last time, I uploaded some 200 images. Only a very few are overwrites, because the original was without a doubt bad quality. An action that is common practice here is forcibly denied to me. And even the main player in this discussion does what I did. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others". Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 22:11, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
