Black Panthers

I see you placed Category:Black Panthers in Category:African American politicians. I'm not at all sure that is right. The rank and file of the Panthers were not "politicians" in any sense; the Panthers who ran the very successful free breakfast program for poor school students in Seattle were certainly not acting as "politicians". - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Joe, I quite agree that I was inaccurate in putting Category: Black Panthers under Category:African American politicians. I am trying to make Category:African Americans more useful by putting images and subcategories into logical subcategories. But probably Black Panthers is best returned toCategory:African Americans. What do you think?

On a related issue, I just started categorizing your pictures of Joy Williamson into Category:African American educators. She should probably be under Category:African American scholars too. The best way might be to create her own category and put all her images into that. I wonder if 6 pictures of varying quality (and 9 files) of one person at one event is too much? Can we perhaps pick the best ones? My vote would be for keeping the ones that didn't need color correction, but I haven't examined them closely. Thanks! • Certainly a "scholar". She probably should have a category of her own, I've seen this done for even a single picture. As for putting up the raw versions as well as the color-corrected: this has come up now and then on the Village Pump. The general consensus seems to be that unless you are very expert at post-processing (and have access to very good tools), it's best to provide both the rawest version of an image you can, and the most cleaned up. The latter is, of course, in case someone wants to use it in an article. The former is in case someone else can do a better job of post-processing: they won't be handicapped by the information loss in your attempt at doing so. In this case, I thought 6 photos (out of maybe 35 I shot) were different enough that I could imagine someone wanting to use any of them, so I uploaded them all, and cleaned some up. Partly it was a matter of flash vs. available light in a situation where the latter - which I almost always prefer - was not necessarily adequate to the task. Anyway, do keep in mind that this is not just a repository for Wikipedia articles, it's a repository for anyone who might wish to use these under appropriate license. I figure that there are people who would precisely not want to use whatever is the exact shot in Wikipedia. Also, as has been said, "wiki is not paper", it doesn't really cost us anything to host extra photos. - Jmabel ! talk 18:54, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Another categorization question

I think a category needs to be created for both of these. Neither image seems to fit within Category:African Americans nor Category:African American History. A picture of an AA club in Seattle might fit in there, under a category Nightclubs frequented by African Americans, ultimately falling into the Category:Nightclubs_by_country and into a new category called African American culture The picture of The Facts could perhaps be put under Category:African American journalists, even though it's a building. Pictures of art are under Artists categories. Any ideas? I have tried to put order into this small section of Wikimedia, but I seem to have messed it up. Do you know how to change the category name so that history is in lower case? Could you do that for me, or rather for Wikimedia? Perhaps African American history can be a subcategory of African American culture? There hasn't been much attention to these categories, which makes it hard to find materials. I continued the practice of throwing all AA military items into Category:African American soldiers, but there needs to be a category African Americans in the military with AA soldiers, AA sailors, and AA military history as subcategories. I don't think there would be a problem just having an image like that in a new Category:Nightclubs in the United States under Category:Nightclubs_by_country and into a new Category:African American culture under Category:African Americans and Category:Culture of the United States. Probably a lot of existing categories could be added to Category:African American culture. I don't think we need to create a specific category for African American nightclubs unless we started having a lot of such images.

For The Facts, maybe a Category:African American newspapers under Category:Newspapers of the United States?

FWIW, I usually reply wherever the conversation started, but if it's on my user talk page & we're not having a more or less continuous discussion, I'll usually drop the other person a quick one-liner saying that I've replied.

I'm not seeing the same problem you are, but I am seeing it skip from 1846 to 1858. I am using FF on a Windows XP system. Can you load the GIF in your browser, refresh your browser, and see if it's still doing that? If so, what browser and system are you using? Question about Slave/Free animated map

Hi, Kenmayer,

I mistakenly thought Golbez created the animated map. He was kind enough to refer me to you as the creator. I am working on a Civil War era exhibit for a National Historic Landmark in Oxford, MS. When I found your animated Slave/Free map, I was excited because it portrays what I was having trouble saying in the few words I am allowed on exhibit panels. Could you please tell me the sources you used for the map?? This is important information for the scholars (University of Mississippi history professors) who have been consulting with me on the exhibit. Also, I was having trouble understanding the "mottled green" color that appears on the map, but not on your key. Taking a cue from your description, I decided you might be trying to depict gradual emancipation. But Golbez thinks it's just a coloring problem between frames. I really appreciate your taking on such a complex subject with the animated map and plan to use it, with attribution. I hope to hear from you about sources. Thank you. Thanks for your interest. I think the green is a coloring error. There are a couple problems with the animation which I haven't fixed (see earlier comments on this page about the image). I will see if I have any sources written down from the creation of this image. I created it as a mock-up for an African American History course for my company. The territorial borders are all from a series of Wikimedia maps which should be listed on the info page for the image. The info about emancipation and slave/free status is from a variety of sources, both texts on African American history and Wikipedia resources. I'll see what I can find. 15th Amendment stereo cards

I was just wondering: what is the basis for inclusion in Category:Fifteenth Amendment, a collection of stereoscopic views? - Jmabel ! talk 06:29, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi! I think a collection of stereocards were printed and sold under that name. So I think only cards that refer to that name either in the image itself or in the uploader's description should be in the category. However, sometimes stereocards without the name on the image or in the description could be included, if they are duplicates of stereocards with the label. Does that make sense? I'm definitely no expert--I just saw the title on a number of stereocards.--Kenmayer (talk) 12:42, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Actually, looking at the stereocards, I only see the name on two images: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:15th_Amendment,_Jacksonville,_from_Robert_N._Dennis_collection_of_stereoscopic_views.jpg and its copy. For the others, I don't know where the uploaders got the name, but the descriptions look detailed and institutional. However, it looks like a few stereocards are just randomly included in this category because they feature African Americans.--Kenmayer (talk) 12:46, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Category:Letters by alphabet

Ken, please explain why you've moved several images of characters, such as File:Ƣƣ.JPG, from the subcategory "Latin characters" to the meta category "Letters by alphabet". Hi, Huntster. I was trying to put some order into the Latin letters category. Some files obviously belonged in specific letter categories, some in Cyrillic and other alphabets, and some, such as the file you link to above, I had no idea what alphabets they belong to. Or, if the file had info, such as the glyphs invented by Spanish missionaries for Maya languages, I didn't know what category to put them in. So I thought I'd kick them upstairs to Letters by alphabet and let the experts there sort them out. Sorry. I didn't see the notice, and there were about 80 files already in the category. Please forgive me.

Perhaps we can create a category, either within Latin letters or Letters by alphabet such as Category:Miscellaneous alphabets or Category:Miscellaneous alphabets derived from the Latin alphabet. Does that make sense? What do you think? --Kenmayer (talk) 01:25, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

"Miscellaneous alphabets derived from the Latin alphabet" seems a useful concept. So does "Unidentified alphabets". Anything that's identified, it's probably worth adding a category for the particular alphabet. - Jmabel ! talk 02:11, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I'm thinking perhaps Category:Miscellaneous Latin letters, or a more generic Category:Unidentified letters, similar to how unknown species are classified so more knowledgeable folks can properly categorise them. My Gha example, for instance, appears to be a Latin orthographical symbol used in Turkic languages based in Cyrillic, so perhaps Category:Turkic letters would also be appropriate for creation. Jmabel is correct, no need to be afraid of creating new categories when these letters do get properly classified. (By the way, Ken, I hope I didn't come across too harshly in my first message...it wasn't intentional.) — Huntster (t @ c) 03:25, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

I think we all have some good ideas and general agreement on how to proceed. I'm not sure I like Category:Miscellaneous Latin letters, because the Latin alphabet is more or less fixed. People might throw in the tons of files depicting two or more letters, such as "FG" "LC".

To my mind the missionary transcriptions for Mayan (and even Claudius's proposed letter reforms from 40 CE)are creations based on Latin letters but not Latin letters themselves. Some might fit in the Latin letter categories (I put a bunch of Turkic letters which were variants of O, E, and R in those categories. But File:Cuatrillo.png doesn't fit any Latin letter really. Category:Letters derived from Latin letters or Category:Miscellaneous letters modeled on Latin letters or something similar might be more apropos, although strictly speaking the Cuatrillo prob. wouldn't even fit there. Sorry. I *think* the Category:Typeface samples is for images of complete lettersets of a typeface. I'm not an expert either, but I've been trying to creat order in the Typography categories. I suspect we should create a category for Native American typography, similar to Category:Greek typography, Category:Japanese typography, Category:German typography and put this image there. Edits to the Slave/Free Maps

Hi, I saw that you were the one that made this map [[3]], and I was wondering why you have the Connecticut Western Reserve (the pink area in what is now Northeast Ohio) as a "slave state" while Connecticut itself is a "free state" and the rest of the Northwest Territory as a "free territory." As far as I know, slavery was not permitted in the Western Reserve because it was legally considered part of Connecticut at the time. Do you have a source that shows the Western Reserve allowing slavery at the time? And actually, calling Connecticut a "free state" at the time is somewhat misleading because they were gradually abolishing slavery, and in 1790 young people could still be enslaved but would become emancipated upon turning 25 (although that's something for a different discussion.) 129.22.129.234 18:47, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the input! I'll see what I can find about the Western Reserve. If you have any sources one way or the other, please enter them here! I should add some caveat to this map sequence that the dates of abolition refer to the passage of laws that eventually lead to abolition, not to the complete abolition. So, for example, NJ still had slaves in its census in 1860 and I believe until the passage of the 13th Amendment at the end of war. So that explains Connecticut's color as a "free state" in this map.--Kenmayer (talk) 19:17, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Actually, based on | this article and your observations, perhaps Connecticut should be colored a non-free state until 1848. It would seem that Connecticut laws applied to the Western Reserve while it was part of Connecticut. I haven't found any text about slavery or abolition in the Western Reserve from 1786 to when it was handed over to Ohio Territory in 1794. Hi, saw this map (and related gifs) and just noticed, the Colony of Louisiana is listed as owned by Spain. In fact it was owned by France. Any way to change that?

Hello! Great map! Is it possible to change the coloring of the states? Red is so often used for Republican (which obviously would have been the Northern states) and blue for the Democrats (the Southern states). Obviously this is a map of slave states and not a map of political parties, but the coloring has led to the confusion of many students who jump to the idea that the Republicans were in the South fighting to maintain slavery, when in fact it was the exact opposite. Thank You!

Missouri border misdrawn

Missouri's northwestern border was extended to the Missouri River in the 1830s with the Platte Purchase so the maps subsequent to that need to be redrawn as they were slaveholding counties.

Hi ... I have a question. who holds the copyright to the version of Las Mañanitas that you uploaded? Error with US Slave Free 1789-1861.gif

The US Slave Free 1789-1861.gif shows the western part of Utah territory as a slave territory and the eastern part as a free territory in 1858 and 1861. It was made a slave territory in 1852 with the Act in Relation to Service. Also, is there any way to move the info box up to more clearly see Utah. Maybe move it between Utah and Nebraska so we can see a little bit of both. Thanks! I appreciate you having made the animation in the first place.FreePeoples (talk) 17:42, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

3-19-2021: Hello Kenmayer, Are you the creator of the map of the Peloponnesian war on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peloponnesian_War#/media/File:Pelop_war_en.png)? If so, do I need permission from you to use it in a book that I am writing on the Peloponnesian war (tentatively titled, Democracy and Empire, the Athenian Invasion of Sicily, 415-413 BCE). I am working with Hamilton Books, which is a hybrid of a self-publishing and a traditional book publisher, a subsidiary of Rowman and Littlefield. It will be about 250 pages, and will be appropriate for general readers and students in an undergraduate class in ancient history. Probably a very small number will be published for around $30 each. The original file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pelop_krieg1.png was created by a user Captain Blood, who has been inactive for over 10 years. The original map and my English translation are licensed CC-Attribution. There is an inconsistency in the GIF where in the frame for 1846 the count of slave states vs free states is not shown in the legend on the bottom-left. This is due to File:US SlaveFree1846 Wilmot.gif not showing the count in the legend too.

Thanks! There are a couple other inaccuracies in the series (see links below). Unfortunately, I no longer have a license for Photoshop, which is what I used to create the images, so I'm been limited in what I can fix. Plus I can't seem to find the original PSD Photoshop files anymore. Perhaps the number legend is an easy fix though.

Apparently redundant category added

Hello. What was the point of this edit, adding Category:Bicycle advertising posters to an image already in the more specific category Category:Bicycle advertisement posters in France?
