Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.MB-one (talk) 20:29, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
thank you very much for your advices - i hope i will become more lucky with the options in the uploader. i tried to give a category after uploading, but i still don't know where i can find a list of the existing categories!? i searched a lot, without success.--80.254.148.139 10:21, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- No problem at all. You will get used to it. For example every BMW model has own categories by name (Category:BMW 5 Series) and by type (Category:BMW E34). The most specific category is the best (in this case Category:BMW E34) but if you don't know the exact type, just categorize by series (or even by brand) and someone will fix it later. What we don't need is to categorize an image under a specific category and their parent category. But again, if you didn't know that, it's okay.
