Uploaded files edit

Hi, Oetherich

There are a few problems with the files you uploaded, particularly the licensing. To make it as easy as possible, I'll discuss one problem at a time.

 • In all your uploaded images you state that you are the author of the works (at "Source: Own work"). This cannot be true, since you can't be both Hans Aschenborn and Uli Aschenborn and you also can't be Hans Aschenborn because he is dead. Are you Uli Aschenborn?

Why this is important:

 • The artist is the person who owns the copyright of a piece of art. Only he can decide whether or not we can use an image, the gallery usually does not have any say in this.

For images of Hans Aschenborn, this isn't a problem. Because he has been dead for 77 years, all his work falls in the public domain and you can tag the images of his works with PD-old.

 • Uli Aschenborn is still alive, so he owns the copyright to all copies of his works (yes, even the images you uploaded). If he is a South African citizen, the copyright on his works will only expire 50 years after they were published (or, if left unpublished, 50 years after they were created). So this image, which is from 2006, will be subject to copyright until 1 January 2057. If he is a German national, the copyright will only expire 70 years after his death.
 • The only way we can continue to host these images here at the Wikimedia Commons, is if Mr. Aschenborn agrees to release his works under a free license. This is unlikely, since that will mean that people will be able to use copies of his works for commercial purposes (i.e. sell them) without him getting a penny.

You are, however, free to send a letter to him, requesting him (or if you *are* him) to make his works available under a free license. If you want to do so, it is important to read, understand and follow the instructions on Commons:OTRS.

Please make sure you understand all of this. If the images are left as they are, there is a very good chance they might end up getting deleted. Anrie (talk) 16:10, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Oetherich!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
