Pardon me!

edit

I don't go on the Commons very often (only reason I'm even here now is because I followed a wrong link) and I noticed this. If I cropped the picture could it go back up possibly? Please reply here as I don't check here very often Krett12 (talk) 03:43, 12 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Columbia University

edit

I simply don't understand this. Some person conjures up a shield for Columbia University and then when I upload the correct one, and you come and mark it as a violation of copyright!!! First of all, a shield from the 18th century is public domain. Second, uploading the shield here is fair use. And, third, refer to Columbia University's official guideline for visual identity. This is not a matter of different opinions. It is simply about facts! Not alternative ones. Real facts! Karlmontague (talk) 22:28, 29 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Karlmontague: You seem to have some misunderstandings here. The shield never existed until the 1940's per the Columbia wiki; this iteration of the shield you uploaded appears to have been created in the 2000's. This would make it not public domain. You also misunderstand Commons. Nothing on Commons can be "fair use"; it must all be "free use" (see Commons:Fair use). As for your third point: yes, I agree, this is the official shield per the university's identity guides, but it cannot be uploaded on Commons since it's not a free image. Also, please please please start writing at people's talk pages and not on their user pages. Only (talk) 22:47, 29 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
